It is about a white sheep lost in a snow storm. That is sad.
The song he was talking about was "Green, Green Grass of Home." The obit mentions the he also wrote "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which my dad told me was the saddest country song ever written. Dad's right.

If the song referred to is "Green, Green Grass of Home", well, Porter did it, Tom Jones, a lot of covers: I never heard a bad one. That's a hallmark of a great song.

Harlan Howard was famous for saying that every time he got married, he got three songs out of it; and every time he got divorced, he got three more.
That grass is green from the Scottish highlands to the Appalachian Mountain valleys. The memory is for the people we knew while we lived on the green side of the grass.
My mother loved those two songs and played them constantly when I was a kid. "The green green grass of home" Charlie Pride version and "D-I-V-O-R-C-E".
I still have the records in the attic somewhere.
Cocaine Blues is my favorite prison song. George Thorogood's version especially.
As great a song as "Green Grass" is, and it is in the pantheon of greatest country songs ever, my favorite prison/country song, and my vote for greatest country song ever, is "Sing Me Back Home", by Merle Haggard.
I first heard it by the Flying Burrito Brothers, then saw the writing credit. Merle.
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" might be the greatest country song ever, too. I could probably think of a couple more "greatest ever" country songs, given a little more time.
Admittedly, I don't know any country music recorded since the mid 80s, or pop music either, for that matter.
For a man to have written 2 of the greatest ever is a remarkable achievement. RIP, Curly Putman.
