"Can you believe someone would put that many Trump signs so close together on our roads? It’s so rude. Who is this jerk?"

That's Betta Stothart — a writer and publicist living in Falmouth, Maine — describing — in The Washington Post — what she and "a bunch of moms" were thinking as they were "grousing about" the proliferation of "Donald Trump signs along our version of Main Street." She says:
We felt assaulted by the number of signs. The idea of "cleansing" our streets seemed like the fastest way to restore balance and alleviate our election stress — at least, that night it did.

The escapade was not premeditated: We simply jumped into my Jetta wagon, drove down to the strip and got to work. In all, it took less than 20 minutes.
That is premeditated, lady. You discussed it in a group, and you had to get in the car — I call bullshit on "jumped" — and drive to another location, and you engaged in an activity that took 20 minutes.
We grabbed about 40 signs and threw them in the hatchback. I hadn’t really thought about what I would do with the signs; I just wanted them gone. At the time, we believed we were doing the right thing. There were so many Trump signs up and down our main drag — it was destroying all sense of equilibrium in our community.
Equilibrium!

Anyway, they got caught by the police. Is that any surprise? They were doing something that took 20 minutes!
The officer was kind, informing us that we had stolen someone else’s personal property, which had not really entered into my mind while I was doing it.
How could it not enter your mind that the signs belonged to someone else? She describes her mind as the mind of an insane person: Someone else's speech was assaulting her mind and destroying all sense of equilibrium, as if she had to protect the inside of her own head where she never dreamed anyone else could own property. But it wasn't really only in her own head, as the policeman kindly informed her.
Reflecting back, I realize that I momentarily snapped.
Temporary insanity. For 20+ minutes.
But there was a deeper reason for my anger than just the signs.
Yes, your anger is deep... in a way that makes it moral, flips it into the good:
Over the past several weeks, grasping the depth of Trump’s predatory behavior toward women throughout his adult life (and even worse, his denial of it) has simply become unbearable. I became unhinged.
She's running with this I-was-literally-crazy argument. But Trump is worse, because he assaulted women. As if she were protecting women by stealing signs. Stothart proceeds to tell her personal story of "a powerful man using his position of wealth and influence to demean my integrity and put my job at risk."
[O]ne day, he called to proposition me to enter an illicit “relationship” with him where he would fly me around the world to exclusive resorts. For sex.

“You’re not the marrying type of woman,” he told me. “I never see you having a family of your own, so I have an offer for you.” He described how good he was in bed. I wouldn’t regret it, he said. It would be “our little secret” and “worth my while.”
So a man at work asked you out? How is that like the stories of Trump and sexual assault? He didn't impose himself any more than asking her out — on a huge date, to be sure (who gets asked on dates of that magnitude?) — he took her statement that she "needed 'to think about it'" as a basis to withdraw the offer.
I should have told him to go to hell. Instead, I told my boyfriend (now husband) about it and buried the secret. I was silenced, until now.
Why would someone who refused a sexual invitation feel she had a "secret" that needed to be told? If she really believed this rich and powerful person has a modus operandi that unfairly burdens women in the workplace, she should have spoken up for the sake of the other women. How was she "silenced"? She's raising this story now to bolster her claim of some sort of a temporary insanity defense to a crime that she plainly admits she committed — a crime not only against property but against another citizen's freedom of speech. She's trying to flip herself up onto the moral high ground.

She has a "source of my rage" she says, and: "It’s why I committed a crime. Yes, I was acting out... But at the time, my act felt strangely liberating..." It's like the generic formula for a fictional criminal character. Something long ago made him very angry, and when he finally burst free into outright transgression, he felt, at long last, liberated. That works in murder stories. That would work for terrorists. In fiction.

Stothart also takes refuge in the time-honored I'm-not-the-only-one defense, discovered by every child that ever got caught red-handed:
As I prepare for a mid-December appearance before a judge in the Cumberland County Courthouse, I am realizing that I’m not the only one going to extremes this fall. There have been Trump sign thefts in Maine and Massachusetts. Trump supporters’ cars were actually vandalized recently in Bangor. Violence at campaign events is now commonplace, and worse, a bomb went off in a North Carolina Republican Party office. The level of agitation — and fear — is rising daily, on both sides.
But, like a good, old-fashioned, square Hollywood movie, this story ends with a crime-does-not-pay message: "It’s not worth it."

But would it have been worth it if she hadn't been caught? And will it become worth it if the Cumberland County judge looks at this nice lady — who had a bad day and expressed herself so feelingly in a high-tone newspaper — and that judge says: Good thing you learned what you did was wrong, and now, don't do that again?

And taking down Trump's signs isn't "scoring one against Trump"--yard signs make absolutely no difference in a high-visibility presidential election, no one drives by and says "oh that's who's running, I should vote for them!"--but it is violating your neighbor's space. So you don't like who they support? Deal with it, it's America last time I checked. And ripping off someone's yard sign is only going to make them more likely to vote, or donate money to the campaign you hate so much.

We have Trump signs in front of some houses in my neighborhood. I'd never even consider taking one down, and not out of respect for Trump. It's because I'd prefer living in a civil society where we respect one another's property and right to expression.

Meade asked the same question.

1. The material excerpted for the post title is in italics in the original column.

2. It's a use of italics that I've seen in novels and that I have adopted as my convention on this blog, which is that italics are used to designate thoughts, where the thoughts purport to be written out verbatim like a spoken word or a written quote. For spoken and written quotes, quotation marks are conventional, but there's something that feels wrong in using quote marks for what was never more than an internal monologue.

damikesc: Feminism has turned many Western women into women no man in their right mind would remotely contemplate marrying.

The scene: a healthy-crunchy restaurant near Apple Computer, Inc. HQ in the early 90s. A recently-divorced 6'4" me walks in to grab lunch. A young Asian (short) woman is struggling to hang a blackboard with the day's specials from a pair of hooks on the ceiling. I simply take the blackboard and hoist it onto the hooks. A nearby server whose name tag indicates that she's Irish (the restaurant apparently hosts foreign workers) says, in a beautiful brogue, "Isn't it nice having a man around?"

The sex relations environment, which I've at that point recently re-entered, is so overwhelmingly toxic that I'm thunderstruck to hear any woman who isn't some caricature of a 1950s housewife say such a thing. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell from my son's experiences over the years, things have not improved. (Thankfully, his self-confidence is such that he eventually met a brilliant, charming, beautiful young woman who he's been with for almost seven years, and is now engaged to.)

Okay, this next assertion is my rather limited anecdotal data, so take it for what it's worth: My experience is that both genders lie at about the same rate, which is a lot, because lies, good & bad, are a necessary social lubricant.

But then there are fabulists, people who spin stories out of whole cloth, & maintain them consistently over a period of time. In my experience, fabulists tend by a large margin to be female. If they're male, they tend to be working a con of some sort, & when the con is done, the story vanishes with it. For the women, it's like they're building this alternate reality to project to those around them, & they really work at maintaining it.

Like I say -- my experience. I'll be happy to stand corrected on this by any real psychological data on the phenomenon.

If you have a Trump bumper sticker, they will deface your car.

if you speak of Trump at work you could get fired.

On social media, almost every message I get from a Clinton supporter is a bullying type of message. They insult. They try to shame. They label. And obviously they threaten my livelihood.

We know from Project Veritas that Clinton supporters tried to incite violence at Trump rallies. The media downplays it.

We also know Clinton’s side hired paid trolls to bully online. You don’t hear much about that....etc

I don't know if electing Trump would be good for the country, but it would be four years of pure agony for the writers at the New York Times, the editorial board of The New Yorker, the political science departments of American universities and Ms. Betta Stothart. That may be reason enough.

harkin म्हणाले...

Remember the most important thing about this vile column......she's just an useful idiot but the Washington Post editors thought getting Hillary elected is important enough to reward vandalism and theft.

It would not surprise me at all if Ms. Stothart is either employed by the Dems in the future and/or somehow paid for this garbage.

Considering the way the Clintons have represented the American people, I guess this is just following form.

And watching the "truthiness" party exposed as the party of vandalism, theft and denial of the 1st Amendment would be hilarious if the implications were not so scary....they no longer even make excuses or ignore, they endorse!

Women in the United States have achieved unprecedented freedom and equality never seen before in history and this was afforded to them in large part through the sacrifice and benevolence of men mostly in the military and police forces.

For the time being, public life is being bent around the sensibilities of these poor little dears, but that can't last forever. I suspect pushback will be severe, when it occurs.

I am triggered by this contra-classist screed and vile pride in privilege, loftily promoted by the washington post. I feel personally threatened after reading this and will be asking my fellow protesters to join me in demanding a retraction, the resignation of the editor, and a suitable donation and establishment of an anti-media-privilege working group.

Until such demands are met, you can expect non-violent protesting outside of your offices including peaceful protesting during rush hour on local major highways. We are not responsible for any destruction of property adjacent to our civil disobedience.

And, as the article points out, because this article made me feel this way I am therefore wholly justified in my actions and prompting of others to take such actions."

I said Western because I see little reason to suspect young Western European women are appreciably less obnoxious to deal with.

Are guys great? No, probably not. But men improve when they have a reason to do so. When the women available in their age range are utterly impossible to marry, then their need to improve is deteriorated. Not even discussing the whoring-it-up issue that is still prevalent in culture in spite of the neo-Puritans on college campuses. Just the attitude and behavior of a fair number of college women makes marriage a nightmare. Who wants a woman who expects chivalry but doesn't hold up HER end up the bargain with that?

No joke. If I ran a college, I'd tell the feminists that the college will mandate a required chaperone for any romantic dates between opposite- or same-sex couples. O'Reilly who is hardly a genius would have conducted a pre-interview to suss this guy out to see whether or not he was worth putting on the air.

Is every one of these people mentally ill? One gets groped for 15 minutes on a plane before she even notices it. This one has no concept of boundaries. Hillary's minions hire the mentally ill and retarded to start fights at rallies. They brag about pulling the wool over America's eyes for 40 years. Their candidate is surrounded by people who hate minorities and see them all as needy in diverse ways and they tolerate Hillary saying "Muslims are sand niggers" and railing at the "fucking jews" for not donating enough to her. Yet they say the other guy is (again like every four years) a Nazi!

WTF?

There's been some hand-wringing for years that men don't seem interested in marriage. It's because most men have had experiences with women like this and it makes marriage way less palatable of an option. I can marry a fucking lunatic, she goes crazy, and I lose my kids, my house, etc. Yeah, GREAT plan. Feminism has turned many Western women into women no man in their right mind would remotely contemplate marrying.

Yup, when I was 20, my list of attributes for a wife was
1) easy on the eyes
2) as smart or smarter than me
3) sense of humor

By the time I was 30, I had to add a new qualifier
4) sane, relatively

Makes you appreciate maybe WHY men took so long to give women equal rights and the right to vote. Can you imagine what they must have been like before the Pill started regulating their mood swings? If there is one thing men do not trust, its emotional inconsistency.

And sorry Feminist Nazis, but by your own "patriarchy" narrative, women have been easily oppressed by men for the last 5000 years. So, what I hear you saying is that women really aren't our equals.

Well, as I scroll through the comments I see people saying good things about Trump- pro-American, and bad things about Trump. And as usual, going through the comments, not a single supporter of Monica Lewinsky's ex-boyfriend's wife, corrupt alcoholic enabler of her sexual predator husband have given a single reason to vote FOR her rather then against Trump.

If you're going to weight reasons to vote against, she's carrying a much heavier load. MUCH, MUCH, much heavier load. If you don't think so, you haven't been paying attention.

And if you're weighing reasons to vote for, Trump is pro-American, a good reason to vote for. And you can't say that about her. Not with a straight face, anyway.

Big Mike--we agree on the problem, we just see the solution a bit differently. While I can think of a lot of things Romney did wrong, I think he faced a lot of disadvantages in 2012 that would have similarly affected any GOP nominee, and even the same Romney would be doing better than Hillary this year (I know, we can never know for sure with such hypotheticals, but Romney would have had more of the right united behind him than Trump has, and more appeal to moderates and while the Clintons would try to paint him the same way they did Trump, it wouldn't be as easy or effective against Romney--Romney just doesn't feed that the way Trump does).

We do need a fighter--one who actually lands punches. Wild nonsense swings at his own potential allies? That's not what we needed.

Feminists still expect men to be chivalrous and ignore that chivalry was a two-way street. Women had obligations in it that they wish to simply eschew. Fine. But why should a man continue honoring his part of the bargain when the women no longer do so?

The "politeness" that men lack is what feminists label as "patriarchy"...it's just the part of "patriarchy" that they don't mind. Men gave up their seats to women because women were "ill-suited" for physical exertion. It was politeness based on an assumption of female fragility. If women are equals...then they can stand the fuck up if I got here first.

Don't throw out tradition until you realize what will replace it, people.

Remember this when they beg for mercy.

Yeah. At this point, I don't want peaceful co-existence. I want them to suffer. Harshly. And I will support any Republican who runs on making Progressives hurt.

There's really nothing new here. It's been some time that liberals and their minions in the media have lived with the attitude that: If you think a law or circumstance is unjust, you don't have to accept it.

Sign stealing, car keying, office bombing....they deserved it. Don't like the immigration laws? Don't try to pass new ones (because that would require publicly admitting your position). Just ignore the old ones and act as if you HAD passed your version. Don't want to comply with FOIA requests and let the public see what you did as a public official? Just lie, delete, destroy and defer....the media will work with you. Don't like those cretins who support Trump? Let's have some fun and go to his rallies and stir up some violence. Here we even get law enforcement itself to look the other way....and the media will reliably report it as "violence breaks out at Trump rally". Win Win.

In other words, LAWLESSNESS itself has become the platform of the Democratic Party. For the entire Obama presidency, I've been asking why the GOP doesn't point this out to the public. Say: "If you don't like the law, offer an alternative that can be voted up or down in Congress. You can't just ignore the laws you don't like! What kind of message is that sending to our citizens?".

Is it just me, or have progressive feminists over the past couple of years started trying to embody all of the negative, sexist stereotypes that feminists used to work to eliminate? Women are now powerful and empowered beings who must always be protected from hearing or seeing anything that makes them feel bad or that they otherwise don't like. If not they can't be held responsible for their actions. Oh, and math is sexist because it's logical. And this is all good, because whatever "women" (by which they mean "I") want is good. If we'd just wise up and put women like them in charge of everything, the world would be perfect.

Then they wonder why more and more women don't want to be called feminists. I guess that's as logical as any of the rest of it. Oops, now I'm being sexist - applying my male logic to their more exalted thought processes. Forget I said anything.

Democrats are completely incapable of discerning right from wrong; they understand only ant and don't-want. So of course they also don't understand guilt; if they want it, it can't be wrong. And they can only address the injustice when they are caught and punished by accusing someone else of wrongdoing as well.
