Something Ivanka did that I wish Donald (and many other speakers) would have done.

When she got a crowd reaction, she paused only briefly, then continued to talk right over the noise. Of course, the microphone works to make every word come through, and the speech rolls on fluently. I wish everyone who speaks at these conventions would watch the video of her speaking and learn.

Great speech. Almost too great, since Trump had to follow her and his appearance and tone are far less glossily perfect. Trump said "I am your voice," but it seemed that Ivanka was stepping forward to be the voice for women. We'll see how the campaign goes forward with her, perhaps, doing the job of making him not merely acceptable to women, but distinctly preferable to Hillary. The factual material is there to be used for this sales job, and I can't imagine anyone more able to run with it than Ivanka.

Ivanka was so good! I've been impressed by the speaking abilities of his children, but she is really good at it, making it look natural and easy. That kind of poise is impossible to fake and the sign of someone well practiced in speaking to crowds and to TV cameras.

She has a wonderful voice in interviews too. Mellifluous even. Like the speech following it, her introduction was a little too long but she presented it as well as can be done.

Remember Trump's kids also had a mother who raised them. While good children are sometimes a reflection of good parenting, we also see good children come from bad parents and bad children come from good parents. Ivanka certainly is a poised intelligent lovely young woman who I suspect is as far from being a conservative as Hillary is. May she one day end up in politics and serve if she feels she has the internal calling. Her highlighting of the need for extended family leave for new mothers and equal pay for equal work was promising. These are liberal issues, maybe now conservatives will come on board, wouldn't that be something?

The Clintons are a disgustingly aberrational family. Interesting that the family of a blowhard billionaire exposes that so easily.

My wife wants a bumper sticker that says: "Elect Ivanka's Dad!"

Presumably, the mediaswine will pull out the stops on her now.

All of the MSM is a voice for women. That's the problem.

What's needed is some self-awareness for women. Neighborhood stuff doesn't work in larger systems.

Sex politics, male and female. Gender is behavioral. In an age of progressive confusion, class diversity, the recognition that men and women are equal and complementary is an unorthodox concept. Embracing the natural correlation between sex and gender is a refreshing change.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Jesus, unknown, don't you know equal pay has been the law for over 50 years. Differences in hours worked per week, riskiness of the job and seniority account for all the differences in net pay. That was the second time (Melania did it first) that the Trump women mentioned chjild care though, so I have a feeling they are lobbying the candidate to do something on that front after the election.

M Jordan said...

@Mike: "Like the speech following it, her introduction was a little too long but she presented it as well as can be done."

I agree. My biggest complaint in this world is the refusal of most people to be brief when they speak. Trump was way too long but I'll forgive him because he wanted to touch every base which he did. Had he followed Althouse's preference above, he could have cut ten minutes off his speech just by beginning each pause before the applause died down. He drained some -- not a lot, surprisingly -- energy out of the room with his length.

Peter Thiel gets it. He wasted zero time starting -- no cornball introductions like that dope who followed him (with the Irish wake story that he completely undermined) -- and he raced through his speech in a sprint. He was maybe too fast but, boy, it was nice to have someone walk off the stage with me wanting more, not less.

Tell that to Ivanka, Miike. It was she who brought if up in her speech yesterday, that's why I mentioned it, or did you miss that sentence in her speech? And no there still is not equal pay for equal work and it goes beyond hours worked. Perhaps Ivanka will elaborate on it in her book. Did you folks know that she has a book coming out called "Women Who Work?" This young woman is not a conservative which is heartening. She also was a fundraiser for Cory Booker

Fake illness is second in our family pool for the excuse Hillary will use to duck the debates. I think it would open up too many problems for an alcoholic stroke victim.

I think Hillary will claim Trump's views are too extreme and she doesn't want to stand on the same stage as him.

Unknown: Hours worked is a great deal of it. The nature of the work is another large part. Men tend to do jobs with much higher risk. I mean stuff like diving down sewers and fighting fires and policing dangerous areas and the like. Women in general don't relish such work, and would prefer sitting at a front desk. This is also not especially safe (a friend of mine's sister got shot when a crazed math student burst into her office many years ago), but it's safer than what a lot of men do every day.

And add that childless women are right up there with men. It's child-bearing that makes the largest bulk (pun not intended) of the difference.

sigh...RE: Gender pay gap I'll let everyone pick their favorite source on why it isn't discrimination

Not much to prove in the matter.

If an earnings difference were due to discrimination some people would take advantage of it by discriminating slightly less, and paying the poor little dears - especially the NAMs* - more than 77% but less than 100% of what the men earn and make a bundle on the difference.

It'd work even better in the computer industry:
"Women in Silicon Valley earn only 49 cents to a man’s dollar."

Fire all your male employees, especially the Asians, and hire those women, especially the mestizos, at, say, 75% and everyone gets rich. Never seems to happen for some mysterious reason.

And won't someone think of the children? Kids under 18 hardly get paid anything at all on average, no doubt because everyone hates them.

*On average Asian women earn 90% of what white men earn (and Asian men earn more than white men...the only possible reason is that people discriminate against white men), so they're not a good deal because someone forgot to discriminate against them.
