Hey.

pm317 ayon kay ...

Hey, look at my Phlox, in the heat and the neglect, they still bloom.

pm317 ayon kay ...

Flower power! I am noticing a lot of flower pictures in the blog this season.

Kathryn51 ayon kay ...

Meade recommended Graze for dinner tonight, but it's closed on Sunday. Still considering Guildof an on alls recommendation (smokeysomthin-or-other).

HoodlumDoodlum ayon kay ...

Day lilies? I have some day lilies.

There's a place in town that sells olive oil at premium prices. I had read about Veronica Foods selling the best olive oil, but when you go to their web site, they don't really show where the consumer can buy their product, except for one very high priced shipper.

It's a weird business model.

Anyway, I went to the local store (I was the only customer), and they have stainless steel pots with little-bitty tasting cups. I made my way down the line and selected two I wanted.

She reached up on a shelf, grabbed a cork, and filled my bottles. Cool... When I looked at the bottle, there in fine print was Veronica Foods. Wow!

And yes, it really does taste better than that fake olive oil at the supermarkets, and gives off an aroma while I stand over the stove. Ummmm....

P.S. I love olives...

Original Mike ayon kay ...

Smoky's Club, Kathryn. I fear Smoky's has gone down hill. You could always count on a perfect steak, but the last time we were there my steak wasn't so great and it wasn't even crowded on a Friday night. The steak might have been an aberration, but the lack of a crowd is concerning. That was at least a year ago; I hope it was just a outlier.

pm317 ayon kay ...

There is a store in Bethesda that sells only olive oil and nothing like that can be found in Whole Foods. @coupe, there was a guy on Shark Tank with a similar business model but with a small storefront in a rural place I think. He didn't get the money.

Bill Crawford ayon kay ...

I hope Althouse will again post on the value of not voting. I suspect she is more likely not to vote for anyone for president than to vote for Hillary.

Paco Wové ayon kay ...

What's this?

Be nice to Hillary Clinton online — or risk a confrontation with her super PAC

"Hillary Clinton's well-heeled backers have opened a new frontier in digital campaigning, one that seems to have been inspired by some of the Internet's worst instincts. Correct the Record, a super PAC coordinating with Clinton's campaign, is spending some $1 million to find and confront social media users who post unflattering messages about the Democratic front-runner.
In effect, the effort aims to spend a large sum of money to increase the amount of trolling that already exists online."

Who ever heard of such a thing?

pm317 ayon kay ...

@Paco Wové

Nothing new. There were paid Obots during Obama's campaign. But since it is Hillary this time, someone somewhere is leaking these trade secrets.

Tank ayon kay ...

Is Althouse making a list of the new DNC/PAC paid commenters here?

pm317 ayon kay ...

Paid comments/blogs/tweets/likes/followers are here and not just in politics and this campaign but in other spheres where the players can afford the money (I see it in the Bravo's Housewives franchise, yes, I used to watch that trash RHOBH but no more).

SweatBee ayon kay ...

Ooh. I like that flower. I'm not usually a fan of speckled ones.

My current olive oil of choice is California Olive Ranch. I don't reaaly care if it's the best; it's good enough and I only have to travel a mile from my house to buy it at the grocery store.

Too many good quotes.

"Too many good quotes"

Old news, dude.

LCpl Predator ayon kay ...

I've tried growing the blackberry lily numerous times, and it never seems to winter over. Are you growing that in your garden, and how many years have you had it? I'm in N. IL and wondering what I'm doing wrong.

Meade ayon kay ...

@Kathryn51, my second-hand knowledge is in agreement with Original Mike regarding Smoky's.

How about brats and beverages at Union Terrace? I see they're showing a movie tonight.

Sydney ayon kay ...

@pm317- I'm thinking of planting phlox next year. I understand they are deer resistant. True?

LCpl Predator ayon kay ...

The deer leave my phlox alone. They love tulips, hostas, daylilies, lilies, and sedum. On occasion, they'll also go for the coneflowers, oh, and I forgot, they loooove sunflowers.

Meade ayon kay ...

@LCpl Predator, the plants pictured are not in my garden but I've grown BL in Zone 6B and I've shared the frustration you describe. I probably failed to give it perfect drainage along with constant moisture.

pm317 ayon kay ...

@sydney, yes and rabbits don't like them either.

pm317 ayon kay ...

Oh 'I Must Garden' has good spice based deer repellent which works. You can buy them online easily from their website. Nothing is more depressing than to find the new tender plants or flowers eaten up by these culprits.

LCpl Predator ayon kay ...

"I probably failed to give it perfect drainage along with constant moisture."

I'm Zone5, and I'm sure the drainage/moisture thing says it all.

Thanks m'am. I can't read every single entry, you know.

LCpl Predator ayon kay ...

pm317, I've had enough hostas, tulips and lilies eaten by the deer that I now know that I can't take any chances, and automatically go around and spray everything. Usually, I only have to do it a few times in the growing season.

This year was quite frustrating because you can't apply the spray in high temperatures (ruined many plants doing that), and we got very warm temps in May & June.

pm317 ayon kay ...

@LCpl try the spice based natural ingredient spray I mentioned. I was too busy with work this season and neglected my garden.

Fernandinande ayon kay ...

talk about what you like.

Homemade chocolate malts. I like them.

A chocolate malt walks into a bar and the bartender says, "is this some kind of joke?"
(it's not funny because it's not true)

Goodbye.

Paco Wové ayon kay ...

Oh dear, another incident of Sudden Jihad Syndrome. More fruits of Hillary!s brilliant statesmanship.

Fernandinande ayon kay ...

On a cold day a gentleman was passing a pub and saw a scruffy old man trying to catch fish in a puddle outside the pub. "Poor old guy, I'll get him warmed up", and he invited the old man into the pub for a whiskey.

The gentleman, at a loss for something to talk about, asked the old man, "So, how many have you caught today?"

The old man replied, “You’re the tenth.”

No, it's actually the place for the emotionally frail. Makes them feel safe.

Yeah, you White people need your Safe Space where you can talk gardening and shit without fear of a Black Man. My ancestors were gardeners, too, if you call picking cotton for the Master gardening.

Keep on talking amongst yourself, I'm just the Black Man in the corner, watching...

I am Laslo.

Meade ayon kay ...

"No, it's actually the place for the emotionally frail. Makes them feel safe."

Very hurtful, mockturtle. May we call you tortoise?

Don't make eye contact or he'll ax for money.

Oops.

mockturtle ayon kay ...

Very hurtful, mockturtle. May we call you tortoise?
:-D No, you may not.

Scott ayon kay ...

Actually, Paco, so far that looks to be not so much jihadi and more random street violence. Apparently the Munich McDonald's shooter is trending toward the lone nut (With a name like Ali and being Iranian, he's almost certainly sh'ia AKA 'The party of Ali' and as such the folks ISIS REALLY despises) syndrome. Certainly I'd call the odds on Munich being a terrorist attack below 50/50 with what we know now about the shooter.

That said, this is doing Frau Merkel no favors, since she's tied to her idiotic refugee policy, and the press is full of this kind of refugee crime and terror. The next set of German elections should be very interesting.

I don't need your money, I get mine from the Government.

Bitch.

I am Laslo.

mockturtle ayon kay ...

Scott, when a Muslim yells 'Allahu Akbar' while killing people, it's jihad no matter how the dhimmi press tries to paint it otherwise.

Meade ayon kay ...

":-D No, you may not."

But you tortoise. (Taught us. Get it?)

Meade ayon kay ...

"Hey, look at my Phlox, in the heat and the neglect, they still bloom."

Beautiful. Is that Butterfly Bush in the background? Love it.

mockturtle ayon kay ...

"Hey, look at my Phlox, in the heat and the neglect, they still bloom."

But you have to watch your phlox by night.

Paco Wové ayon kay ...

"not so much jihadi and more random street violence."

I'm sure that was a big comfort to the murdered woman.

Thank you to all that participated in the Althouse Cyber Visitor Bureau for Madison WI and your various recommendatios for dinner tonight.

Dr. Nephew was willing to do anything, but Dr. Wife (who is working today) wants pub-type food so dinner will be at some Dane place.

Weather permitting (and Dr. Wife's schedule - please, no baby delivery late this afternoon), dessert will be ice cream at Memorial Union.

Who on this blog claimed that Madison summers were mild? Liar! But we have enjoyed visit very much and look forward to a return trip - at a different time of year.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

"Who on this blog claimed that Madison summers were mild? Liar!"

MadisonMan, who lives at a secret, undisclosed location.

wildswan ayon kay ...

The lilies that are closing in the picture are closing a spiral or tight screw. I've never seen that - well, once or twice on different plants one single flower did something approaching a spiral but not so consistently or so evenly.

I wonder where these flowers grow and what they are.

Trump is now up in 3 of the most recent polls.

And the New York Times has a column out, "Why you should feel free to ignore the polls for the next couple of weeks."

Too funny.

pm317 ayon kay ...

Hilarious is right and scary if he were to manage the country like this He does not like the phrase patching in.. LOL.. He is worried about using the teleprompter and it showed in his speech.

Bad Lieutenant ayon kay ...

Pm317, they're animals over there. Wow. I wish I could set PayPal to take money from them instead of giving it.

What part of your mind sees any deep significance in a little stage nerves? Have you ever addressed 300 million people? Did you care whether or not you did a good job at it?
