A morning walk by the lake.

Mendota, this morning, when the temperature was around 70°. They're predicting 92° today, so the trick was to tear myself away from the blog early enough to have outdoor time while it was cool. That was fine, except for the part where the ice cream stand at the Union Terrace wasn't open yet.

That was fine? That was fine?!? What part of leaving us without new posts for three freakin' hours do you consider fine?!?!?

P.S. I know I don't say it enough, but thank you for what you have created here.

Summertime is never Bummertime in Madison.

Bring on the heat! Turn off your A/C people, and acclimate.

Tonight is a great night for a beer at the Terrace. See you there!

David म्हणाले...

We are leaving for Wisconsin on Sunday. Please turn down the heat by then. It's supposed to be near 100 in coastal SC.

Lucien म्हणाले...

But the early morning bonus is glassy water on the lake -- one of the joys of early morning rowing. Too many ripples later on.

Just closed up the house. We are without AC this summer, so better to have stifling inside temperatures versus the God awful outside temperatures.

Meade म्हणाले...

David, all you have to do is go to the right part of Wisconsin. Door County, or the Apostle Islands. I hear it's still snowing there.

(Please don't Snopes me, bro.)

Today: high 69, low 59. About the same for the rest of the week.

A couple of days ago I was walking the dogs when a rather ballsy Blue Heeler came charging out and attacked without any hesitation. My res dog - slightly smaller - had him upside down immediately. Both dogs chewed on him until he could get away and run off.

I have totally forgotten who the hell Ignorance is Bliss is, and whether I like him/her/it. Damn our 007 secret identities, anyway!

You know the nice thing about putting our names on the stuff we say?

What, Saint Croix?

Accountability!

I think she should take a Sabbath once in a while. Althouse's work ethic is awe-inspiring. But it's okay to relax and recharge the batteries.

You should not have posted that. Now she will feel things have gotten out of hand again, and needs to be straightened out.

That's the advantage of living near a lake -- how still and calm it generally is in the morning. Particularly this election season one needs some calm.

I suspect people here are more likely to remember Ignorance is Bliss than my real life, totally generic, totally white bread white boy name.

And, just to jog your memory, it's him, any you don't like me, you love me. Everyone does.

Mendota was nice this morning. We took a walk on the lake loop opposite the city. Checked out a West Wight Potter (English sailboat) on a hand cranked boat lift. That was interesting. I'd never seen a hand cranked lift. Finished our walk to ward off the calories from my latest enterant in America's greatest french fries competition: DLuxe's (down by the capitol building) truffle cream parmesan fries. Or as I refer to them - heart attack and a bullet. Also of interest was the statue of the Union Col of the 15th Wisconsin volunteers killed at Chickamauga in 1863. My great great grandfather and namesake served in Kershaw's brigade of South Carolinians in McLaws div of Longstret's Corp on loan from the Army of Northern Virginia. Here's hoping my antecedent wasn't the cause of that brave American's death though such are the wages of war and a time of killing. We like Madisn muches. On to Taliesan East and then down the Mississipp and back home to North Florida.

"My great great grandfather and namesake served in Kershaw's brigade of South Carolinians in McLaws div of Longstret's Corp on loan from the Army of Northern Virginia."

Actually, Longstreet was sent to Tennessee from the ANV to shore up Bragg. That battle was lost by both sides, really. That is where Thomas got his title "The Rock of Chickamauga" in a losing cause. He saved Rosecrans from disaster, however. Longstreet almost won it.

I was just rereading the third volume of Bruce Catton's Civil War Trilogy, 50 years after I first read it.

In an effort to be neutral, I also have a first edition of Douglas S Freeman's biography of Lee.

However, next week I will visiting the graves of my two great, great uncles who were killed at Vicksburg in Grant's army. One, James, was listed as "Killed in Battle." The other, William, was wounded on the same day, May 22, 1863 in the final attack before the siege. He died June 2, 1863 of typhoid in a Union hospital in Tennessee. I have his letter to his wife. The last one was May 27, 1863 and told her he had been wounded in the arm but was OK would soon be shipped north to the hospital. He died there.

It's calm like that because the wind is at their back, they are on the lee shore. You can see further out, where the breeze is engaging the water, it starts to get a little chop. It might even be rough on the other side.

Heartless Aztec म्हणाले...

Mine made it from Bull Run to Appomattox with a lot of down time for sickness and a wound in the Peach Orchard on July 2nd at Gettysburg.

@Ignorance is Bliss. No one on the rolls of Co A 2nd Gov Guards was enlisted as "Surfed" lol. Funny story: my great great grandfather's company commander Frank Gaillard's great great grandson Phil Gaillard is my doctor here in Jacksonville. Both our gg grandfathers enlisted in the same company, served through the war - survived - and here all these years later his gg grandson is my GP. Small world.

Colonel Heg. We love our Norwegians here in Wisconsin — the high-educated ones (most are high-educated), the low-educated ones... we even love the ones who can't seem to hold their liquor during Norwegian Pride Parades. Drunk maybe, but peaceably drunk.

Safe and enjoyable trip home to the southland, surfed.

Hagar म्हणाले...

Americans have got all kinds of strange customs, but are you supposed to applaud when someone is giving an eulogy for the dear departed?

Meade म्हणाले...

Hagar, the answer, I'm quite sure, is no. Here's another one: taking a picture of the deceased in an open-casket viewing. I've seen it happen. Please, no.

Original Mike म्हणाले...

"I am very tired of Power Outages at the UW."

Maybe your building is too close to the power plant.

Studies show, there is an optimum distance.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Power outages were SOUTH of University Ave. Obviously the Civil War is not yet over.

Meade म्हणाले...

They should never have taken the very best. I just hope they don't tear up the tracks too.

Heartless Aztec म्हणाले...

Well you know what happens if you play country music backwards: the train pulls into the station, your pick up truck starts, it stops raining, your girlfriend comes back, the beer never runs out and the South wins that damn war.

Meade म्हणाले...

Yeah. Unless it's Joan Baez singing the country song. Frontwards or backwards, if Joanie's a singing, ever thing goes just straight t hell.

Hi Saint Croix! Yes I'm a woman!

p.s. thank you to anyone who's around who congratulated me on my daughter's birth. My husband had stepped out to get us some takeout, the baby was asleep and the hospital has wifi, so of course I checked out what was shakin' at Althouse. I'm an addict, it's true.

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

So I tried to ask out a single mom. And I will tell you up front that rediscovering Christ has seriously messed up my dating skills. But, oddly, made me more attractive to women!

I have been a pro-lifer for a long time. And it finally hit me. Saint Croix, why are you not dating a single mom? You damn pro-lifer. So I had my eye out, ready for the single moms to pop up in my life. And then one did.

She was 28 and had three babies, and she was gorgeous and she was flirting with me. Unfortunately this happened at work. I have a rule, no dating at work, do not date at work, you need a job, dummy, no romantic catastrophes at work. You are not going to date at work!

Unfortunately she was totally ignoring our dress code and wearing mini-skirts to work. She was dressing completely inappropriately for work! And I was having trouble focusing on my work. You might think that some of the men who are in charge of our workplace would enforce the dress code. You would be mistaken. So I am like this.

Saint Croix Demon #1: "I want to fuck her. I want her. I want her right now. We can do it in the bathroom. We can do it in the hotel next door. We can do it in a stairway. Oh my God she is so hot."

Saint Croix Demon #2 : "Three kids! Three kids! We're not ready for three kids! You barely make your own rent, dummy. Run away! Run away! This a commitment trap waiting to happen!"

Saint Croix Demon #1 : "Fuck her! Fuck her!"

Saint Croix Demon #2 : "Run away! Run away!"

Saint Croix Angel: "Just be nice. She could use a friend. Just talk to her. You're a nice person. She's a nice person. This could be a nice conversation. Break bread together."

So, with two fucking demons and an angel on my shoulder, I approach this hot babe who has three kids.

"Hey, how you doing?"

"Hey! Good to see you."

"I was wondering if you would like to--oh shit, that's a ring. Are you married?"

"No. It's an engagement ring."

"Oh. I thought you were a single mom."

"It's complicated."

"Right. Right. Of course it is."

Saint Croix Demon #1: "Fuck her! Fuck her anyway!"

Saint Croix Demon #2 and Saint Croix Angel: "Run away!"

Meade म्हणाले...

surfed, I declare even Joanie can't ruin a country song this good .

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

that damn ring would make an appearance, a disappearance, a reappearance

you're killing me with the ring, killing me!

and the damn mini-skirt

Meade म्हणाले...

Too many red flags, bro. Be honest with her -- tell her she's the wrong one for you, because you know she is. Listen to what she says. If an honest friendship gradually develops, fine, the two of you have a chance. Meanwhile, contemplate how good your life is now, as it is, without entanglement in a romantic but problematic committed relationship. Remember the last time you were in one of those? Now, open your eyes. You're free. Prove to yourself that you can love freedom. Only then will you be ready for step 2.

Meade म्हणाले...
