Jackson has grown old and is no longer a favored member of the culture terrorist elite. Mocking the current leader of the pro-choice church, Obama, was probably a bad idea. He will never be invited to the super players' beach-front estates in Hawaii. I guess flying to France leaving a trail of CO2 emissions was his last best option.
I believe Jackson - Le Pen is not well known in the US. Just some other old Frenchman at the table. He is actually a rather fascinating fellow. He's had a weird life.
I recall back in the 1984 Presidential race, primary presidential candidate Rev. Jackson came to College Station, TX, and gave a campaign speech at Texas A&M University, supposedly one of the most racist, hick-filled schools in America. He was received politely by a student-packed auditorium and gave a good stump speech, for a racist, liberal Democrat with zero chance to win office. No metal detectors, no ID checks, no screenings of attendees were used. Aggies are nice, even to folk we don't necessarily like much.
IN the audience, men in dark suits kept a close eye on a student with a rolled-up towel in his hands, who had come to the speech from the gym, apparently. Nothing in the towel, as the kid showed by unrolling it casually, when he realized two men had moved directly behind him in case it held a firearm.
The Rev. Jackson won great applause by stating that he knew he, or any other Black person, could be elected president because just recently, even A&M had gotten a Black quarterback. Of such local knowledge is a political success crafted.

Hymietown comes to France,
Jackson misunderstood. He thought he was dining with Pepé Le Pew.

President Obama frequently hosts Al Sharpton at the Whitehouse. No big deal.
Jesse Jackson
Is this believable?
Answers itself.
NYT passively asserts:
"Jackson Is Seen as Winning a Solid Place in History"
If it were anyone other than Jesse Jackson, I might not believe it.
Who paid for the meal?
Strange that the article references multiple Twitter photos of the two men but shows none. A quick search finds none.
Le Pen should be more careful next time not to be seen in public with someone of such low repute.
About as believable as Ta-Nehisi Coates' reason for not buying that house in Brooklyn.

Just the other day someone here quoted this move from Ron Swanson. Then Jackson copied it.
Crackers all look alike.
rejajn, THAT WAS ME!
One has to take into account how bone-ignorant Jackson is.
On the Chicago South Side "Jean" and "Marie" are female names, so of course he didn't connect his male dinner partner with Jean-Marie Le Pen.
Wait until he finds out that Marine Le Pen is a hot blonde and not a soldier.
My guess is that if Le Pen knew how corrupt Jackson was, Le Pen would have gotten up and left. Those Frenchies can only tolerate so much.
I'm never surprised when Jesse Jackson doesn't know something so I guess I can't be surprised when he doesn't know someone.
