Exactly, how does liking Ambient put you on level 5? I'd put downtempo, ambient dub, and acid jazz a level below Noise. Free jazz should be a level below noise too.
I know and have listened to all the categories in Level 1. Then I'm let. What is dubstep and EDM?.........They say the first sign of getting old is when the cops start looking young. I'd put a disconnect with popular music up there as well.......I think you could probably cultivate an interest in Mozart with more ease and greater profit than an interest in dubstep, but then you wouldn't be hip.

Several subgenres I've never heard of, but no bluegrass? That's a relatively basic genre. Fail.
The music of the spheres. Just add Bob Dylan's voice.
I've had some "Tibetan throat singing" albums (level infinity) since the early 80's, back when NPR discovered Tuva. How hipster is that?
no category for opera...
I am surprised that ambient can get you to level 5. I like ambient, but it is not that different to elevator music.

"Semen-operated keyboard (orgasmaclavler)"
Ha!
treated static. Is that like SimplyNoise? Because I listen to that a lot.
True, hearing and liking the sound of God now puts you way beyond outcast.
Yes
@Dr. Weevil
Maybe they subsumed bluegrass under country and/or folk.
Country has killed Bluegrass, thanks God for the vintage stuff on Spotify.
Mine is 19th century.
I'd be down for some fractal chord mapping.
Seeing all of the whining above, it is obvious you guys are not hipsters.
Only at level 2. "Tragically unhip", what's that from?
Great Headline,-Laslo bait.

My wife and her friends refer to Mumford and Sons as bluegrass, which makes me see red.
If the "banjo" part in your song is indistinguishable from what might be done by a sequenced synthesizer, then you're just cosplaying.
There should be an Althouse does a dick joke tag.
Listening to Mumford and Sons makes me feel like I'm a moonshiner eluding the sheriff in a mid-tempo car chase.
Level 6. Who doesn't like dark ambient? (I am completely serious.)
Below that (past field recordings and musique concrete) it's just invented.
More importantly, actual hipsters mostly seem to like more or less ordinary music ... from underground performers.
The stereotypical hipster pretense is to have known about them before they were popular, not to like things that are simply unpopular.
