IN THE COMMENTS: traditionalguy says: "Stick to Best Western. They clean up between guests." But remember that old story about hotel guests that noticed a bad smell and picked up the mattress and discovered a decomposing body set down inside the box spring? Snopes marks it "true" — and it's not just something that happened once:
Dead bodies get stashed in the box spring or the bed's pedestal more often than you'd want to believe. What's more, a fair number of them are only discovered days later ... after the new tenant complains about a persistent and disagreeable odor.Lots of details at the link. Plus this cartoon:

That's bad marketing right there.

When I was younger, I thought it was so great to stay in a hotel. It didn't have to be super-expensive, just modern and clean. And then some killjoy TV reporters started going through hotels rooms armed with a UV light, looking for ... spots. Ugh. Next time I stay in a hotel, I'm bringing a bottle of Lysol with me. And the first thing that gets wiped is the TV remote control.
We checked into a hotel in St. Paul a few years ago and found a gun between the sheets.
Always interesting to see the dark side of the sharing economy.
Hey is that a stiff, or are you just happy to see me?
I agree on the Best Western comment. I've driven cross country a few times and always try to stay at Best Western motels. A little more pricey, but worth it.
Not a bug, a feature, dependent upon your outlook.
Like the "bring your own cockroachs to the restaurant trick?"
Guests trying to get free rental? I would check their history, may have pulled this scam elsewhere, with different corpses. (corpsi?)
Holey Mackeral.. What kind of rating did they have?

Did you keep it?
I'm not sure who I'd call if that happened to me -- the manager, or the police. I probably wouldn't keep it, especially if I was flying to/from where the hotel is.

Made we wonder, there's ride sharing, home sharing, pet sharing... is there a service for gun sharing yet?
"Did you keep it?"
LOL. That sounds like a bad idea. We called the manager. And we stopped going to that hotel for our annual trip to St. Paul (WCHA hockey tournament). It was an OK hotel in a convenient location in the beginning but it ran downhill over the years. As our financial resources improved, we started staying downtown in the grand old St. Paul Hotel.

I certainly hope not.
When relocating for a new job, the company put us up in a company-leased apartment for a while. When we moved in, we found several items left in one of the drawers, including a couple dozen rounds of ammo.
Since the company had the long-term lease on the apartment, we figured the previous resident was also associated with the company, so I turned it in there. In hindsight, bringing ammo to my first day of work might not have been the best idea, but it was not an issue. ( It was in Alabama, after all. )
I can see a dead guy in the garden putting a real crimp in the old evening BBQ party.
Hauling the (more or less) recently deceased from hotels and motels is a regular part of homicide cops' lives. Usually, though, they are not too dated, because the maids find them before they get too aromatic. Which is not to say some are not...messy. Most are accidental or suicides, brought on by motel-induced over-enthuastic behavior involving odd items or controlled substances, often in the context of something sexual, most of which the cops do not pass along to the families if possible. Deceptive, true, but in a good cause generally.
In the early 1990s (I think) @ the Society of Toxicology meeting in Anaheim CA some attendees found a body in the foundation of the bed in their hotel. A year or so before an attendee was shot in the buttocks @ a strip club in Atlanta. Toxicologists used to be such bad asses
