A man who has been working in the area said he noticed a half-dozen Middle Eastern men in the area in recent weeks, but decided not to report anything since he did not wish to racially profile those people.

"We sat around lunch thinking, 'What were they doing around the neighborhood?'" he said. "We'd see them leave where they're raiding the apartment."

As Kate at SDA said "If you see something, shut up you racist!"

The attack was premeditated and required a fair amount of preparation.

I'm disappointed that the SBPD apparently broadcasted everything over unencrypted public channels discussing names, licenses, tactics, etc. Also, local news broadcast witness phone numbers, etc, in their haste to report everything without discretion.

Our society doesn't seem prepared to handle things like this at all. If the terrorists weren't amateurs, it could have been much worse.

I'd wager that other terrorists took careful note.

Interesting that the CAIR guy doesn't jump to "Gun control". He actually outlines the possibilities for these murders without that knee-jerk reaction. I lean toward the easy explanation that this is somehow influenced by radical Islam and I will remain leaning until someone proves otherwise.

This was not an act of individual craziness - as so many of these attacks are - this was a planned attack that depended on some kind of philosophical/theological underpinnings to be carried out.

I don't really know enough about the actual shooting to comment on it, however I did spend a good portion of yesterday watching the reaction of the press so I do have a question about that.

Do they not understand just how bad they look when they suddenly latch onto the same meme at the same time? Do they not understand that this just makes it obvious that they're all still coordinating their messages, or are we supposed to believe that all the "your prayers do nothing" posts occurred at the same time by coincidence.

As for the stupidity of their attacks on people offering condolences I just have to wonder who the genius was that said "You know what? We should attack people for offering prayers the next time there is a shooting, that'll win the argument."?

Let's say my brother in law committed a crime like this. Within a few hours I get a call from Milwaukee Archbishop Listecki saying he'd like me to come to a press conference and do some hand wringing in front of the national media to protect the broader interests of Catholics.

But he wanted to control what I said.

My first response would be, "how did you find me so fast, and how do you know he's my brother-in-law?"

Something in not right here. That press conference last night was surreal. Because simultaneously as the press conference was going on, CNN was still pushing "the guns were purchased legally" "the shooter left the party angry" "it could be metal health issues". CAIR found the brother-in-law faster than the name of the second shooter was released, which turned out to by Syed Farook's wife.

The were pushing the exact same narrative as Mr. Ayloush.

Besides, CNN Opinion piece has already announced the cause of this massacre. It's the NRA's fault. They opposed legislature banning the sale of weapons to anyone on the terrorist watch list.

Without addressing the validity of a "list", if we ware going to deprive people of constitutional rights for being on the list, why not just deport them. Then we don't have to worry about them buying guns at all, legal or not.

The terrorists in France shouldn't have had guns it had. It was against French law. How could it have happened. It's kind of like Chicago, I guess.

WP: 355 mass shootings this year. Farook and Malik compared to...yes, the Oregon neo-Nazi and the Charleston white supremacist (if you had to choose just two other shootings, you know, at random). Never mind that almost every "mass shooting" is a gang related/drug related urban incident from somewhere like Chicago, and that most of the accused "mass shooters" were prohibited from possessing firearms by existing statute. But more gun control.

What most of us consider to be mass shootings are isolated incidents, statistical anomalies, and as such, difficult to quickly pigeonhole because of their rarity and the typical mental health component. This one sure looks like radical Islam though.

CNN's behavior was bizarre. It was as if they had been through a dry run in preparation for a mass shooting with a Muslim identified as the shooter in order to protect something to the n'th degree.

And the panel they lined up was a bunch of B and C list commenters. They were nobodies. It seemed like the deal was, "if your willing to go on air and push X, Y, and Z, talking points, we'll put you on TV". You won't see those same folks that had to call this wrong for five hours back tonight.

And then they would have "BREAKING NEWS", "ONE OF THE GUNS WAS PURCHASED LEGALLY!" That's like the big so what.

Fox brought out Megyn Kelly for the night, but Anderson Cooper was nowhere to be found.

Lawrence O'Donnell seemed to know where this was heading. I expected MSNBC coverage to be tiled, but O'Donnell did seem as scripted as CNN. His tone actually seemed appropriate.

I think it was simple tribalism. The republican candidates offered prayers and the democrats jumped right to gun control, therefore payers are bad because republicans.

Main lesson here is be prepared to help yourself. Over Thanksgiving I had a conversation with my brother who just retired as a cop with counter-terror experience about Paris and decided I wasn't paranoid enough. I put together a trauma pack for the car and a small blowout kit I can carry in a pocket. Tourniquets, Israeli Bandages, airways, Gauze, pneumothorax kit (I did the Army Combat Lifesaving Course)
I have a carry permit from VA but because I work in MD for the government I am unarmed during the week. (I can't even keep one locked in the car.)

So, did Farook have a fully auto AK-47?

He and his wife apparently had .223 caliber AR-15 style semiautomatic rifles or carbines. This from the late night press conference by the police chief. Not sure how anyone could confuse the two - one is mostly wood, the other black plastic and metal, one .30 and the other .223, etc. They were also carrying semiautomatic handguns. Hers was, I think, a S&W. Don't remember his.

I think my favorite factoid though is that they were apparently wearing GoPro cameras. Definitely more something that a jihadist would do, as contrasted to someone engaging in "workplace violence".

Charlie Eklund said...

I'm not convinced there was automatic weapons fire in this clip. The long burst from about :45-:53 seconds in the video sounds more like semi-auto fire to me, with time between shots to allow for each to be from individual pulls of the trigger. If there was an automatic rifle on the scene, I would consider it more likely to have been used by law enforcement rather than the terrorists.

There was time to upload it, and besides, some or all of the shooters - and some other co-conspirators preparing for Round 2 - are still on the loose.

I'm thinking maybe Farook was possibly the leader. In that case, the otehrs may not know what they should do next and may do nothing.

Obama is still not ready to say it was terrorism. Has he forgotten that he said, or his spokesman said for him, that the Benghazi attack was terrorism, even if it was not connected to anything else?

This investigation is in a sad state if they don't know enough to definitively link it to international terrorism, but maybe they do have enough, and it's processing - processing - processing - and that's bad too.

The FBI has taken over the investigation, but that may be bad news - I mean for solving this and finding the other perpetrators, and hey may need to find them soon, plus, of course, look for parallel plots.

With the details that are available this morning I can guess at a dual motive. These two were part of a larger cell with different plans and went off plan to attack some person or people for personal reasons and in furtherance of their religious ideology at the same time. I'll be interested to see how close this guess comes to the mark.

The acting President's motives are unmixed. His attack on the American people is, and has always been, purely ideological. I guess you could say that the personal is political and vice versa, but still he's a simpler case. He just hates the country.

Especially with the administration's official line being "governors cannot do a thing to prevent this". Nothing will engender good will like FORCING somebody to accept potential terrorists.

Congratulations, Michael K. I have been tapering off Althouse lately because she's become predictable, tedious, and banal, but I had to check in today to see if Garage had yet exuded any Obamic reflexive mutterings to the latest bloody jihadist escapade. Your comment required commendation, sir. Very pithy.

And, as for I wonder if SEIU will stay on the team ?, I think what anarchists, National Socialists, and Communists used to say about omelets applies.

I feel pretty sure the police are working on reality as opposed to the press who are frenziedly maintaining the CAIR - PPFA line.

And now I hear wife had a K1 visa.

These facts are worrying me. Six month old baby. He flew to SA in Spring. Wife was on K1 visa.

Either information is wrong or this points to them making a fake family to get her into the United States.

Why?

If he flew over there in the spring, how did they have a six month old baby already? K1 visa is a fiance visa that is only good for 90 days. Had she only been here 90 days but they already have six month old baby? Where was the baby born?

I hope we are getting incorrect information and they were a family that decided to jihad together. Because otherwise, this is pretty sophisticated.

I don't know, of course, what this conversation consisted of or what information your brother may have conveyed to you. However, I have a relative who is retired from a major federal law enforcement agency, and this relative tends to see things from the point of view of a law enforcement agent. Which is to say, this relative's opinions are colored by a point of view that may have preexisted and influenced the choice of career, or the point of view may have been shaped by experience and peer influence over the course of the career, (or a preexisting point of view may have been reinforced by experience and peer influence throughout the career).

In other words, a police agent will tend to see things through a particular perspective, just as a criminal defense attorney and a prosecuting attorney will tend to see things from their respectively different perspectives, and any statements made must be evaluated in that light.

AUM:
Copying Jonah Goldberg's opinion because you don't have the wherewithal to express yourself on the subject? So, one is to infer that you support all of Mr. Goldberg's political positions? This is supposed to be some sort of gotcha?
Or does this just constitute projection on your part; the idea that the left requires strict conformance to their catholicism or risk excommunication therefore the Right must do so as well.
You know like WFBuckley in the 1950's, driven to obscurity for his stance advocating decriminalization of, IRC, all drugs?
Er, I mean ah, Dick Cheney hounded from office for his support of gay marriage years before Obama?
Uhhh, no, no, ... Bill Cosby being called a house nigger for advocating that Black leadership push for more personal responsibility in the community? Thaaat time???
If your snippet is truly representative of Mr. Goldberg's position on it; a highly skeptical conjecture indeed, but I am nothing if not gracious, then he is simply wrong. I thank God we have the Constitution to back me up.
That the government could place my name, or your name, on a list without due process (that means court hearings, lawyers, appeals, facing one's accuser...that complicated stuff) is chilling. Societies that have allowed such have been disastrous for humanity.
The NFList is flawed. No doubt. In some cases we should shit or get off the pot; charge them or not. It is a triage effort in a sub-rosa war, a coarse filter, the 80/20 rule in action. A necessity with inadequate resources but not enough to steal anyone's rights.
You appear to take the position that the NFList would have stopped the attack in San Bernadino. What would have qualified him for such a list? Middle Eastern heritage? Muslim religion?
So, essentially you advocate disarming all Middle Eastern muslims.
OK. I got it. We've all got it.
Why don't those evil, racist, xenophobic conservatives get it?
Except for Goldberg of course. That's why you like him.

I'm familiar with the bumpski stock. After watching Bubba with a bumpski burn through a 45 round magazine on youtube, I'm convinced the firefight video included a volley of fully automatic. We won't ever know how it was accomplished, but how hard can it be to smuggle the appropriate parts, and build it up from legally acquired parts.

Oh I agree with that. When you see man's inhumanity to man a lot it colors your perspective of the species in general. I'm retired military and he and I share a worldview that we would call realistic and most would say is paranoid.

My apologies for spelling out the obvious but you really do seem not to understand."

You know what? You've convinced me. Why, it is the height of absurdity to believe that this was a horrendously failed attempt to control the narrative and not simply a natural reaction.

I mean, there is no more natural an event than seeing a bunch of media folks with a history of trying to control the news cycle react in the exact same manner, with pretty much the exact same remarks, stemming from the exact same incident at the same time as each other.

Clearly this was in no way, shape, or form a pre-planned effort.

If it goes without saying, why did you feel it necessary to say it and then limit the focus of your comment specifically to a "police agent"?

No, of course not. Forget I wrote it. Couldn't be further from the truth. Perish the thought. Pay it no never mind (best said with a strong southern US accent).

Of course, the conspiracy part of the comment is much more difficult to walk away from, what with your previous documented comments and all.

This morning an NPR interviewer (Steve Innskeep I think) asked if the couple followed any particular "conservative" strains of Islam.

Robert Cook will spend no time lecturing leftists about their neurotic efforts to brand every bad thing in the world as conservative. He will instead make that claim about conservatives who object to lefties scoring cheap points tying terrorists to their real enemy.
