"Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and an adventure."
From "4 Oliver Sacks Quotes on Gratitude," which extracts quotes from a new Oliver Sacks book — just right for Thanksgiving — titled "Gratitude."
It contains the quotes of others, such as Samuel Beckett saying "I wouldn’t go as far as that" when somebody said "Doesn’t a day like this make you glad to be alive?"

Nice to read something more traditionally Thanksgivingish. The Beckett thing is hilarious. I'm going to jot that down.
Uhm, where's Laslo? I thought he'd have several comments up already...
"I wouldn’t go as far as that"
Small precuneus.
As I read the headline, I thought it was quote from Bill Clinton from the love story article.
"just right for Thanksgiving"
I wouldn't go as far as that.
I had a political talk radio show in college. I wanted to call it Intercourse, but they wouldn't let me. I ended up calling it Discourse.
I love Beckett, who was said to be inordinately kind. He really would give beggars the coat off his back.
Just for the record, Oliver hasn't had Intercourse with me.
" I have had intercourse with the world... I'm not that promiscuous.
Snark aside, he was a wonderful writer and a great humanizer of people suffering from terrible afflictions.
