@Original Mike, that's nothing compared to the ending of the Michigan-Michigan State football game yesterday. Looking at the clock, if one of the Michigan Wolverines had managed to tackle Watts-Jackson before he crossed the goal line, there would have been at most 1 second -- and probably none -- for MSU to run a play.
I saw the new Mad Max movie. Non stop car chases with lots of crashes and fights. It's an exciting movie and I can heartily recommend it, but, for all that, there was something lacking. I first put the deficit on Tom Hardy, the new Max. He's brooding and macho, but doesn't have the sense of fun that Mel Gibson brought to the role. But further investigation led me to discover that Eve Ensler had a hand in the plotting of this movie. Eve Ensler of Vagina Monologues fame is plotting Mad Max movies. The horror. There are names and ideas that cannot be linked in the human mind without doing damage to the synapses of the brain. Eve Ensler and Mad Max........The feminists have infiltrated Hollywod in the much the way the Communists did a previous generation. The peril is great.

It's the symbolic substitution of recreation for procreation and for actual creation. Yet, it's nearly impossible to discuss this w/o moralizing or making joke (as Althouse did). It's actually kind of sad.
I see Reuters have a report up that a Chinese conglomerate his submitting a proposal to build Governor Moonbeam's high speed rail project in Never-Never Land.
The next president will inherit a healthcare crisis with the economic collapse of the ACA. Expect the moves from the elites in next year's election politics to reflect this.
Weed is killing ten people a day on the highways, up from 3 people a day a decade ago. So keep delivering those pounds. Helps keep down the excess population.
Trouble is that it is not usually the baked driver who dies.
I bet weed is keeping more otherwise-drunks off the highway and chillin' in front of the TV watching Teletubbies re-runs. As intoxicants go, dope is far less of a social evil than alcohol. And Pot Culture, while essentially silly and escapist, seems a lot more benign than most of the toxic crap shoved at you these days.

Source please.
I know stoners personally. They drive better stoned than sober. They drive slower and paranoid making them far more attentive than when they are sober.
You post this crap but your point is exactly the same as the gun grabbers with less actual evidence. Total and complete garbage.
I don't have a philosophical opposition to pot, BTW, I just get sick of the "pot never killed anybody" bullshit. And the "people I know drive better baked" arguments. You hear the same thing from drunk drivers, they say they drive great. I have heard them.

Ok. Lets read this article, which you obviously didn't.
"Cannabinol, a remnant of marijuana, was found in 12.2 percent of those deceased drivers during 2010, (up from 4.2 percent in 1999). Pot was the most common non-alcoholic drug detected by those toxicology screenings."
“The increased availability of marijuana and increased acceptance of marijuana use” are fueling the higher rate of cannabinol found in dead drivers, Li told NBC News."
Cannabinol is found in your bloodstream for days after you smoke it. More use means you will probably find it in deceased drivers. Duh. What none of these studies have shown is that it actually impairs driving.
tim in vermont said... "I don't have a philosophical opposition to pot, BTW, I just get sick of the "pot never killed anybody" bullshit. And the "people I know drive better baked" arguments. You hear the same thing from drunk drivers, they say they drive great. I have heard them."
I have ridden with them. I have actual first hand experience. The only reason I wont let them drive sometimes is because I want to get where I am going and they drive too slow. I also don't want my friends to get DUI's now that cops and states are running around milking another source of revenue.
The laws for "driving impaired" in Washington State were written by progressive insurance. States are pushing the driving impaired thing because it is a cash cow. But there is no evidence that it impairs driving. And if someone is so stoned to the point they would be impaired? They don't get off the couch. There is one study that had people smoke a nominal amount and drive. You know why there aren't more studies on THC impairment of driving? Because the state would have to admit it is just handing out DUI's to take money from people. It is nothing like alcohol.
You are completely ignorant, you have 0 actual knowledge on this subject, and it is easy to see in your posts.
I'm listening to a female anchor quizzing a Redskins coach as to how they could let a halftime lead get away from them. Sorry, Althouse, but she's shrill.
Newspeople should not get so invested in the local team.
PS: The Mets have a 2 - zip lead on the Cubs. So much for the prescience of "Back to the Future."
I'm a fan of storefronts, commercial interiors, and posters and signs, not of marijuana per se. But legalization of marijuana is a significant issue that I'm following and have written about. I don't get a "reliving my youth" feeling from going into a place like this, which I find very 2010s.
Since Achilles made that comment that I have "0" knowledge of the issue, a memory was triggered. In the early 80s I lived in Boston, my car, an 1978 Datsun 510, a car I really liked, was parked in the street below my apt. One night we heard a loud crash, looked out the window and my car had been struck (it was totaled) and the driver left the scene. When I got down to my car, he had turned around and come back. I don't know if he was high or not, but his eyes were sort of red and below his eyes, they looked like pillow cases. I have partied enough, and with other people to recognize somebody who was totally ripped. I gave it up a long time ago. I prefer alcohol, which I don't abuse, and which leaves my system within hours.
I have a story in my family that would break your heart of what a drunk driver did too. I never said I was against legalizing pot. I just said that people need to know the dangers and denying them is wrong.
Anyway, I am sure that the fact that this guy was high in no way contributed to him slamming into a parked car and totaling it.
tim in vermont said... [silly story omitted] I just said that people need to know the dangers and denying them is wrong.
Your link (which amusingly cites a fast-food worker as an expert source): "A separate study — also based on FARS data — found that in states where medical marijuana was approved, traffic fatalities decrease by as much as 11 percent during the first year after legalization."
So more people smoke and the accident rate goes down. If 100% of the population smoked all the time and the accident rate went down, all people in fatal crashes would have traces: if wearing red hats while driving became popular, a higher percentage of people in accidents would be found with red hats, even if wearing a red hat lowered the chance of an accident. As it is now, most people in fatal crashes don't have any drugs in their systems, so your logic would indicate that lack of drugs causes accidents.
It may be a "silly story" but it happened. Calling it "silly" is just more denial.
So when officials and legalization opponents talk about increases in these figures, it still isn’t clear what any of this means for road safety.
And it isn't clear what it means when legalization proponents talk about the issue either. See how that works?
We are proposing a major change that we don't understand yet. I think the best approach is to let Colorado and Washington State continue the experiment, but the numbers are far from in. Maybe in two or three years we will find out that the effects are trivial. We don't know that now. Pretending we do is just fooling yourself.
William S Burroughs, who knew more about drugs than anyone and everyone in this conversation, declared that a man under the influence of marijuana was unfit to drive a car. Of course that was only his opinion. And the grass is stronger now...?
tim said: I prefer alcohol, which I don't abuse, and which leaves my system within hours.
Good on you.
But note that while you might have residual THC in your body for a long time after smoking pot ... you won't be high for any longer than alcohol makes you drunk, really.
And it's impairment that counts, for purposes of safe driving, not detectability of residues.
(I mean, morally and in principle; obviously a law may state otherwise, but that's another issue entirely.)

Wallabies win in the 80th minute!
I'm rooting for a Wallabies/All Blacks final.
It can't be healthy to fetishize the smoking of marijuana.
Great rugby action.

Okay, maybe a little for the munchie companies.
It's not wise to be part of Doctors Without Borders when Barack Obama is personally (or so he claims) selecting bombing targets.

More bong for your buck in that store.

The "potted" mailbox is cute though. Are those common in WI these days?
@Big Mike: Poor Jim Harbaugh (snicker).
I see Reuters have a report up that a Chinese conglomerate his submitting a proposal to build Governor Moonbeam's high speed rail project in Never-Never Land.
Wilbur chortles whenever Michigan loses. To anybody. In anything.
Do they sell weed or just a bunch of useless crap?
I am delivering ~4 pounds to a store today.
@Original Mike, Harbaugh will be asking himself til his dying day why he didn't put a safety behind the punter.
The next president will inherit a healthcare crisis with the economic collapse of the ACA. Expect the moves from the elites in next year's election politics to reflect this.

I don't know. Sparty was (I believe) rushing 11. (and no, auto-correct, Sparta was not playing.)

We certainly should be doing well controlled studies to determine the precise toxicology of impairment.
And I love how "driving really slow" = "driving safely."
William S Burroughs, who knew more about drugs than anyone and everyone in this conversation, declared that a man under the influence of marijuana was unfit to drive a car. Of course that was only his opinion. And the grass is stronger now...?
Anybody afraid to drive over 25 mph has declared themselves unfit to drive a car.
Doesn't the pothead who blew up and framed that $10 know what wheat [okay, might be rye, but ... definitely a grain] looks like?
Those aren't hemp plants being harvested and bundled.
(Jesus, I want all drugs legalized now, and think pot is fine, but these people infuriate me.)

It was on the interwebs just recently that the Colorado state police haxw seen a 3 fold increase of drug related(read marijuana) accidents.
No matter what you think pot impairs you/
