The problem with all the modern exegetical attempts to whitewash the Biblical passages on homosexuality is that the early Greek Fathers of the Church, who were fluent in Koine Greek, understood those passages to be directed against homosexuality. ALL of them. There's no one in the early history of the Church who has any kind words for homosexual behavior.
So, if homosexuality has changed so much since the 1st C AD, does that mean gay people aren't born that way? Because, I would presume if it was biologically fixed, then its presentations would remain much the same over time.
It's tough to keep the different exegeses from stepping on each other sometimes.
If abstinence-only programs are ineffective in sex education and lead to epidemics of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, why do we lack gun education in schools?
Should our children really be learning to handle guns from video games where there are only virtual consequences?
A guy goes to his doctor and says, "Doc, I got an embarassing problem."
Doc: "What is it?"
Guy: "When I pass gas, it makes a weird sound, and everybody laughs."
Doc: "Hmm. What kind of sound?"
Guy: "Well, it's sort of like...HON-da...HON-da..."
Doc: "Hmm. Well, have you changed your diet lately?"
Guy: "No, not at all; pizza and beer all the way."
Doc: "Have you been exercising a lot, or traveling, or anything like that?"
Guy: "No."
Doc: "Anything changed in your lifestyle since this started happening?"
Guy: "Well, I have been practicing The New Celibacy. It's where you go without sex just because, not for religious reasons or anything. Supposed to be good for your health."
Doc: "That's it!"
Guy: "What?"
Doc: "Didn't you know that abstinence makes the fart go honda"?
It is literally a pig trough, but Meade put it out by the sidewalk for dogs. If there are any pigs out for walks, we'd love to see them use it. The wild animals, especially the fox and the coyote, are welcome to use it.
Will Governor Walker -- now officially a Presidential Candidate -- veto the nonsense the Republicans (they all didn't write it of course) put into the Budget that guts Wisconsin Open Records laws?
Can a Presidential Candidate run on More Government Secrecy?
Okay, then, let's assume that the Biblical injunctions against the practice of homosexual sex is to be taken at face value and not to be interpreted in the context of the times in which they are to be written -- that Christians should view the Bible the way that modern Muslims view the Qu'eran -- then does homosexuality rank significantly higher or lower than burning any yeast or honey in offerings to God, or failing to include salt in offerings to God, or eating fat, or eating blood, or failing to testify against any wrongdoing you’ve witnessed, or failing to testify against any wrongdoing you’ve been told about, or touching an unclean animal, or carelessly making an oath, or deceiving a neighbor about something trusted to them, or finding lost property and lying about it, or bringing unauthorised fire before God, or letting your hair become unkempt, or tearing your clothes, or drinking alcohol in holy places, or eating an animal which doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof, or eating – or touching the carcass of – any seafood without fins or scales, or eating – or touching the carcass of – eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, the red kite, any kind of black kite, any kind of raven, the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat, or eating – or touching the carcass of – flying insects with four legs, unless those legs are jointed, or eating any animal which walks on all four and has paws, or going to church within 33 days after giving birth to a boy, or going to church within 66 days after giving birth to a girl, or having sex with a woman during her period, or having sex with your neighbor’s wife, or giving your children to be sacrificed to Molek, or having sex with an animal, or making idols or “metal gods”, or reaping to the very edges of a field, or picking up grapes that have fallen in your vineyard, or stealing, or lying, or swearing falsely on God’s name, or defrauding your neighbor, or holding back the wages of an employee overnight, or cursing the deaf or abusing the blind, or perverting justice, showing partiality to either the poor or the rich, or spreading slander, or doing anything to endanger a neighbor’s life, or seeking revenge or bearing a grudge, or mixing fabrics in clothing, or cross-breeding animals, or planting different seeds in the same field, or eating fruit from a tree within four years of planting it, or practicing divination or seeking omens, or trimming your beard, or cutting your hair at the sides, or getting tattoos, or making your daughter prostitute herself, or turning to mediums or spiritualists, or not standing in the presence of the elderly, or mistreating foreigners, or using dishonest weights and scales, or cursing your father or mother, or marrying a prostitute, divorcee or widow if you are a priest, or entering a place where there’s a dead body as a priest, or slaughtering a cow/sheep and its young on the same day, or working on the Sabbath, or blasphemy, or inflicting an injury; killing someone else’s animal; killing a person must be punished in kind, or selling land permanently, or selling an Israelite as a slave (foreigners are fine)?
Because it sure seems that more traditional strains of Evangelical thought has been obsessively focused on a very, very small range of sins in the large domain of those identified in Leviticus and elsewhere; and that this focus reflects value judgments that have nothing to do with the Bible, or the love of Christ.
Ralph Blair's work in helping observant Evangelical Christians reconcile their self-identified homosexuality with a community that rejects -- sometimes violently -- their right to exist as themselves, is truly the work of a Christian in every respect. Characterizing his work and the work of other theologians so engaged as a "whitewash" is unworthy.
Laura said: "...why do we lack gun education in schools?"
A lot of schools do have gun education if they have an ROTC program. Many also have rifle teams which compete as an athletic program.
When I was in high school in Atlanta in 1967 ROTC was required of all males in sophomore and junior years. We had a rifle range and an armory. The armory had two rooms, one with about 400 WWII surplus M1 rifles (firing pins removed) and another room with .22 rifles for target shooting. Every cadet was assigned an M1 for drill and was required to clean it weekly. For final exam one semester we had to go into a dark room, blindfolded, and sit on the floor on a blanket and re-assemble the broken down M1. Grade was based on time it took to do it and get it right. Everyone also got time on the range with the .22, shooting from standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone positions. A part of our final grade included the target scores. You also cleaned the rifle when you got through. We had a retired MSGT who was one of the "President's Hundred" who coached the rifle team. Our team won the GA state championship every year I was there.
I don't know if all this is still done but I am pretty sure my old high school still has a rifle team, it was still active when I visited a few years ago. The are not uncommon across the south and west. I think some colleges have them, too. I don't shoot now and own only one antique rifle but there are probably people on here who know more about this than I do.
And though I ended up not being in the military I thought my two years in ROTC in high school was a valuable experience. All the high schools in the community I live now have ROTC.
"The wild animals, especially the fox and the coyote, are welcome to use it."
There are multiple foxes. I saw two at once last week. A picture was posted to the Sunset Hills server of 3 foxes frolicking in a field at Hoyt Park. The claim was also made that at least 16 were born in the neighborhood this year. Beware, chipmunks!
Speaking of chipmunks (and water troughs) a friend of mine dispatches his with a water trough with sunflower seeds floating on the surface. Provide a little ramp for them to get to the edge and, well, you get the picture.
Because it sure seems that more traditional strains of Evangelical thought has been obsessively focused on a very, very small range of sins in the large domain of those identified in Leviticus and elsewhere; and that this focus reflects value judgments that have nothing to do with the Bible, or the love of Christ.
That's the media version. I go to a large evangelical church, and I think I've heard them mention homosexuality two or three times in the several years I've been there.
The sin they preach against most often is materialism. After that, probably pride and spiritual sloth as evidenced by failing to help others and being unkind. Anything else would be far distant to those. One far distant one is pornography addiction, which they've probably talked about a dozen times more than homosexuality. And when homosexuality is talked about, it's not talked about in the context of, "those horrible gay people out there," it's mentioned as part of a list of temptations people in the congregation may face. For example, the teacher might say something like, "I don't know what your bent toward sin is. Perhaps you struggle with acquisitiveness or laziness or gluttony or pornography or anger or lust or homosexual desires or judgmentalism or pride or something else. But whatever it is, God loves you. He desires that you repent and go to Him in prayer for help with these things."
The reason that homosexuality and churches are in the news together all the time right now is that they've come into conflict politically, not because homosexuality is the focus of the churches, which it isn't.
I like what you wrote, Freeman. It makes sense. No mush there.
Unless you are a Hebrew living 2500 years ago under the Law and all the other rabbinical injunctions added, homosexuality is one of many sins.
Then came redemption and the fulfillment of the Law in Christ and a lot changed.
I don't justify the practice of homosexuality in that same breath. That's up to the individual. When gay marriage is legalized, however, it begins to affect the nation and we will see that with the strident activists leading the charge. Maybe worry about that, rather than shellfish.
Many of the seemingly silly laws make sense now, like circumcision and the food laws that no ancient doctor or nutritionist could have possibly understood.
The basis of many of the laws enter into our moral code and tradition. Like marriage: man and a woman. They often get mixed together and the Bible is often blamed. Then believing Christians.
We'd probably be better off if the old injunction of restitution made it into our laws rather than providing food and housing for a criminal and no recompense for the victims. That's just one, but a biggie.
The briefer version of your posting is the commonly seen "God hates shrimp" meme.
All those things you listed --- they, like the prohibition against sodomy, are still binding for Orthodox Jews. Jews are still under the Law. You can't eat shrimp. You can't smoke pole. The rabbinic tradition is clear on both. Period. End of story.
Now, Christians are no longer bound by the non-moral aspects of the Law (the process starts here). But, it's not like the Ten Commandments get abrogated with the dietary strictures. A Christian can eat pork, but he can't commit adultery. It was the job of the apostolic & barely post-apostolic Church (i.e. 60 to 150 CE) to figure out "What do we take from the Jewish traditions that we came from & what do we leave behind?", e.g. must a Christian be circumcised? Well, the early Christians took most of the moral commandments, and definitely saw themselves bound by at least the strictures of the Noahide Commandments. But, in all of it, the plain text & the interpretation was that fornication, including homosexual relations, are right out. No Church Father disagrees or reads the passages from Paul or Leviticus differently.
I've read some of the modern attempts listed in your link to re-read the Pauline passages as not referring to homosexuality, e.g. J.E. Boswell's attempt in Christianity, Homosexuality & Social Tolerance, to read "arsenokoitai" (ἀρσενοκοῖται), which literally means "male-fuckers", as referring not to homosexuality, but to female prostitutes that "peg" their clients. It's a pretty tendentious reading, and there's nothing any where else in the NT or Early Fathers that refers to that practice, even when they get into great, gory detail (see chapter 10:6).
I mean, c'mon! We can't even polish the toy soldier without sinning. You think you guys are gonna get a hall pass? Get in line with the rest of us sinners, buddy.
Guildofcannonballs, now you've got me wanting to start that gym. Wrong demographic, though. Gotta be at least 40 to get it.
I've long wanted to find four other guys named Bob and a gal named Ann (or Anne) and start a band called "Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, and Ann". I'm not a good singer, but could carry background baritone.
Freeman Hunt said, "The reason that homosexuality and churches are in the news together all the time right now is that they've come into conflict politically, not because homosexuality is the focus of the churches, which it isn't."
No. The reason is that leftists assume that Christians hate homosexuals. Jesus taught love, not hate. That's impossible for a true leftist to understand.
Deported five times, wow, I wonder how many white women he killed before he got caught?
Another illegal, deported three times, recently killed a TV Sports anchor in Oklahoma, by doing a u-turn in front of him. No drivers license, no passport, no visa.
A number of times on this blog, when government entitlement programs were discussed - I pointed out that there is no compassion in making promises you can't keep, or in running up ruinous levels of debt. I pointed out that the poor and the elderly would be much worse off in the end for all these foolish and feckless 'promises' masquerading as compassion.
Now, I submit for your review: Greece (making my point for me...)
So last night I was walking the rare clumber in my hood, very innocently, when a SUV pulled over aburptly, by the HUBWAY Bikes near my extremely expensive loft.
A women and man flew out of the car because they were enamored by the clumber.
So I answered all their questions-told them his age, where he came from, and hesitantly, how much he cost.
They kept on screaming, he is rare, he is rare! I was like I know.
The woman, who was hot, then preceded to get in the car.
That is when I noticed the man longingly looking at me. He said, Papi, you are so hot....this is really, actually, my real life. He had a shirt on from Uno's-he worked there and was latino-of course I was in heaven.
We moved onto the nearest tiny park and did it, while I was holding the leash to the clumber. He asked to go into my loft, but I was like no way, you will see it, and start stealing shit. I was multi-tasking; every now and then the rare clumber was sniffing the sex activites....and fireworks were literally exploding all around us.
But, I was not satisfied. He was a bossy bottom. He was like put your dick here, and then over there, and then he was hurting my cock with all his demands.
He was like I will call a friend and get some drugs, and I was like no fucking way.
He was like 20 and said please love me! I was like I am out of here.
I showered afterwards because I was on the ground and dirty. I had to soothe the rare clumber to bed.
This was all after I actually drove out to fucking Foxboro to watch a drum corp show at Gillette Stadium.
It was a tramatic day for both the clumber and me.
My fellow Americans: Two weeks ago, when Governor Jindal entered the race, I threatened America that if one more Republican ran for the Presidency, I, too, would seek the Republican nomination. Today, I make good on that promise (podcast version here).
The Former CEO of Disney mentioned Arkansas as he opined that funny, beautiful women are impossible to find:
“I know women who have been told they’re beautiful, they win Miss Arkansas, they don’t ever have to get attention other than with their looks. So they don’t tell a joke.”

I pointed out that the poor and the elderly would be much worse off in the end for all these foolish and feckless 'promises' masquerading as compassion.
Now, I submit for your review: Greece (making my point for me...)

Behold all the desperate and crying elderly people. This is where socialism leads.
Dog's a Democrat.
I was just kidding about pig's trough, Zeus, you.. and the rest of it. But thanks for the explanation.
Aren't you concerned about creating a breeding ground for mosquitos?
I took a cafe called "At the Pig Trough" to be rude and condescending.
Here, pigs, talk.
Talk amongst yourselves, pigs.
Helter Skelter is coming down fast.
I am Laslo.
At the Pig Trough we will determine the gorillas.
I am Laslo.
Can we say fascism yet?
Fascism has begun to arrive in the United States -- from the left side of the political spectrum.
@Meade, are you sure that's water in there? 'Cause there's this report.
Fascism has begun to arrive in the United States -- from the left side of the political spectrum.
Fascism always comes from the left side of the political spectrum.
It was a tramatic day for both the clumber and me.
tits.
It's water all right. I rinse it and refill a few times a day.
Beautiful, unfunny women. Not bad!
Why is it that the first couple of comments to a cafe post always seem to come from wing-nuts?
Professor Why do you support verminous cat eating pests?
@Meade, I hope you realize I was pulling your leg.
Off course I know, Big Mike. I was being your straight man.
I thought Meade was responding to BDNYC about the mosquitos.
