"The married woman prison worker, 51, suspected of helping 'Shawshank' escapees break out after being lured by 'handsome, womanizing' double murderer and his cop killer friend."

A Daily Mail headline.

A description of the woman:
Mitchell, a registered Republican lives in a two-story gray home with a 'Don't Tread on Me' Gadsden Flag — made popular by the Tea Party movement — flying out front. The Stars and Stripes and a U.S. Air Force flag are also on show, according to the Press Republican newspaper.... There was speculation she may have fallen for Matt's good looks, with the source saying he 'had a way with the ladies'.

Women make exceptionally terrible prison guards at men's facilities. Stories of them falling for the male inmates aren't exactly rare (nor are female teachers raping male students).

Why are they there? They can't put down a riot.

MayBee said...

IT's important to know how she votes.

Eric the Fruit Bat said...

So perhaps it was less of an escape and more of a liberation.

I have a neighbor in my rural neck of the woods with a Gadsden Flag who puts campaign signs out for Mark Pocan, and Mary Burke. I guess he is one of those rare Democrats who don't like to be tread upon.

She sounds more like a Dem., thinking with her lady parts and all.

That's handsome?

I'm curious. Do folks who appreciate male beauty think either one of these dudes is handsome?

Upstate NY is well populated with chavs.

Not to pile on, but the minute I heard they may had outside help I assumed it was a woman who had fallen in love with one of them.

A "registered Republican" no less. That's a crime in itself.

That's just damning news for the Tea Party unless the author meant something else.

I'm sorry but is she confirmed as aiding them? If not then why is this news. Also did she prevent anyone else from hearing power tools drilling apart concrete?

"Handsome?" "Good-looking?"

Of what universe do we speak?

MAJMike said...

Why aren't these two monsters dead?

Sammy Finkelman said...

I don't think they are saying that there's only one person that helped them escape. But the motive for the others might haqve been money or help in criminal activities.

traditionalguy said...

It's those gallant murderers at it again. They are so charming. Some men do have powers to mind control weak people, like Charles Manson had.

The worst escapee was 6 foot 5 inches tall on the mugshot scale. Maybe she wanted his approval.

Bob Ellison said...

traditionalguy, 70 inches is five-foot ten.

First we learn Republicans get traffic tickets, and now this? When will their terror spree end?

(Ann, I had high hopes for the "crim" tag, but sadly there are no other posts in it.)

Goju said...

Is the Daily Mail also as informative when it comes to the political persuasion of the looters in Ferguson, etc? Or the religion of the terrorists?

TCR James said...

A registered Republican? I knew Ted Cruz was responsible for this somehow. Or perhaps Marco Rubio.

traditionalguy said...

Thanks Bob Ellison. I misread the inches as feet and inches. so he is normal size. Back to the comment drawing board. The Life without possibility of Parole sentence in place of Death is not looking so good now.

Power tools require electricity, or lotsa batteries. They also make lotsa noise. I'm failing to understand how they pulled this off.

Assumedly the Daily Mail people would respond that the politically right-wing angle is man-bites-dog, and therefore interesting to their readers.

I've only ever been registered to vote in Georgia. This is a serious question. Are there states that require identifying political party affiliation?

Do they ever write registered democrat? I know its very rare when writing a story. Or in Time's speak, a column or report.

I had to find out for myself that the Westboro God Hates Fags Crew are all registered Democrats. Funny how no one in the media found that interesting...

Why, its almost as if the media are "Democrat Operative with Bylines" or something (Insty)

MayBee said...

Orange Is The New Black comes out this Friday. They must be thrilled for the attention to prison escapes and romantic intrigue with the guards.

Franklin said...

See?! The Tea Party Terrorists are at it again. Freeing murderers! Somebody ask Rubio and Walker if they support the Tea Party's stance that murderers should be released from prison!

Hagar said...

Besides the power tools, the escapees must have had exceptional good knowledge of the old mechanical systems at Dannemora.

Sort of like the Democratic National Committee. Except their criminals have enough clout to avoid prosecution.

A small house near us is rented by two young black guys and two whites. Their yard is usually a bit of a mess. Vehicles and boats parked or being repaired. Unstacked firewood. Piles of brush. A rusting pile of metal. But they are polite and not disruptive and all seem to go to work every day.

The confusing part is that they often fly a Confederate flag.

MacMacConnell said...

Fen, "I had to find out for myself that the Westboro God Hates Fags Crew are all registered Democrats. Funny how no one in the media found that interesting..."

All one needs to do is go to a Kansas Democrat State function, the Phelps are there in force and welcome. They are the go to law firm to harass Republicans.

The national media will never mention Fred Phelps political affiliation even though he's ran three times in Dem primaries for governor and once for the US Senate. His children always run for state offices as Dems.

Bay Area Guy said...

Ugh, more bad journalism. The focus should be on what this woman allegedly did to help these two criminals escape, not the flags at her house or her party affiliation. Jeez.

Ann Althouse said...

Should be crime. Will fix later.

It's vitally important that these two inmates be captured so they can be registered to vote.

Their family trees don't branch much.

...yet David Duke running as a Republican once is proof-positive Republicans are really, really Klansmen. You know, deep down.

OK, I looked at the pictures, and I understand "good looks" is a relative term, but really, that's stretching relativity to a point even Einstein couldn't understand.

Accordig to Wikipedia, not exactly. You can declare party affiliation in many (most?) states, though it's not required to affiliate with a party in any state, to vote. Some states like yours have non-partisan registration. In some states you can vote in the party's primary only if you affiliate (check off a box) with that party.

Title IX strikes again! Fairness wins!

But beyond the "female accessory" insider help, the incompetence &/or laziness surrounding this escape seems widespread. No one heard the noise? Or some
heard it, but decided "Not My Job"? Were they paid to not hear anything suspicious?
And the hourly check failure: Fooled by a pre-adolescent prank. Ouch. I sure hope they figure out a solution, for bed checks.

In my state, you don't declare a party affiliation when you register. You must declare when voting in a primary to get that party's ballot, and at that time, you may be challenged by a poll worker, who, I assume, is an activist member of the affected party. You then have to sign a statement that says you are not under duress and that you truly believe in what the party represents, then you get the party ballot and into the booth you go.

If there are issues on the ballot, you ask for the issues ballot if you do not want to declare.

My dad worked at Dannemora for 15+ years, mostly running the wood shop in the Annex. It seems amazing to me that anyone was able to escape that place - the sight of it is shocking in person. I was maybe 11 the last time he took me to work with him. Just getting into the administrative parts of the facility was quite a process.

From what I've heard from some COs back home, when they do bed checks at night, they can't shine lights into the cells or demand that a prisoner uncover his head. If that's accurate, it may explain why the escape went unnoticed for as long as it did.

There is almost no other blue collar work in that part of the world, other than in the prisons. The Adirondack Park Agency makes sure even light industry decides to locate itself in another part of the state. It's more than a bit depressing to know growing up that the only job you're likely to have is as a CO. From as far back as I can recall, my dad would say "you can have any job you want in the world, but you can't have mine."

The article says that in the "Honors" block, they allow the prisoners to wear civilian clothes. That strikes me as an awfully boneheaded policy for a (supposedly) maximum security prison.

While I don't really disagree with you, this guy did have one asset.

A retired police detective who once jailed Matt said that he is 'very well endowed' and 'gets girlfriends any place he goes'
