"Scherzer was one strike away from a perfect game on Saturday..."

"Scherzer got the count to 2-2 on Tabata but then hit a leaning Tabata with a pitch and allowed his first baserunner of the afternoon. He rebounded quickly by getting Josh Harrison to fly out to left field and walked off the mound with a no-hitter and a 6-0 Nationals win."

The old leaning Tabata!

I expected Mr. Tabata to be Japanese.

As is always the case, a few outstanding defensive plays to save the no hitter.

Tabata intentionally moved his elbow into the pitch. Bush league.

Scherzer one-hit the Brewers in his previous outing. Now my son's 8yo team could possible one-hit the Brewers, but to throw a no-no after a one-hitter is pretty incredible.

And yet with all that awesome pitching, the Nats are only 36-33.......

Echoes of Ron Hunt?

I agree -- bush league. Well... perhaps Clinton league.

My daughter was at the game. She was pretty excited.

Smart move by the hitter. Don Baylor would be proud. Scherzer needs to be smarter next time. Buehrle has a no hitter, a perfect game, and a World Series ring. He's a very smart pitcher. Talent isn't enough.

My son was at the game. Not until he got home and I mentioned it did it suddenly dawn on him that he almost saw a perfect game.

As to Tabata deliberately moving his elbow into the pitch, I find it hard to believe that anyone would deliberately move his elbow, of all sensitive body parts, into a major league slider traveling 80+ mph.

If Tabby did that intentionally, it was the first "heads-up" play of his career.

Go back and look at all the padding he was wearing.

By the way, Scherzer said he would have leaned into the pitch too.

Scherzer has one blue eye and one brown eye....when he pitched for Detroit we used to say when he was pitching this well, "Max was pitching with his blue eye today"

mccullough,

Baylor can't hold a candle or a sore rib to Hunt.

Tabata didn't know that Sheryl Sandberg's advice was only for women.
