"Oh, God save us. What have they done?!!!"/"Crazy b******s!!! This is the end."

Tweets from Tyumen in south central Russia, where a big cloud looked like a nuclear explosion.

ADDED: Irene photographed a very similar cloud in Verona, Wisconsin back in 2011.

Well, I've heard tell that you can create a mushroom cloud with enough conventional explosive. Not that I'd want to witness that first-hand.

When I think back on all that old footage of "average" Americans watching nuclear tests in the distance, my only reaction is, if I'm close enough to witness a nuclear blast, that's too damn close.

They say there's nothing more exhilarating than being shot at and missed.

Maryland clouds

But to be fair, they were over Delaware too.

I like the spirit of some of the comments you posted, Prof. A. But did none of the observers think to ask why they hadn't seen a tremendously bright flash? That's kind of the first Yes/No question on my Is That a Nuclear Explosion flowchart.

Some people need to get out more.

And lay off the vodka.

Here's a much better one, in Colorado recently.

Beg pardon jps but if you see the flash then won't you be blinded? And don't people feel the radiation hit?
