"Why Do So Many People Hate the Sound of Hillary Clinton's Voice?"

A piece by Elspeth Reeve, who seems to have the Hillary + gender gig at the New Republic.
Clinton "has a loud and clear voice," Stanford linguist Eckert says. "A ‘nice’ woman tends to have a breathy voice," she explained, sounding a little Marilyn Monroe-ish. "There’s nothing breathy about Hillary Clinton’s voice. And if somebody doesn’t want a woman to be powerful they’re not going to like that voice."

Nunberg agrees: "People have become so conscious of the semi-coded ways in which people communicate these sexist notions of aggression." Like Frank Luntz noting he would get "hit" by Media Matters, for example. "Voice will be the place where that comes home to roost. ... It’s just another way of saying ‘shrill.’"

Are we back to the "If you don't care for Hillary Clinton it's because you have a psych problem" meme?

It's the content the inauthenticity, and the tone, not the sound.

HRC's public speaking voice is but one of a series of deal-killers in her bid for president.

Too strained, too strident.

Who would vote to hear that voice hectoring them?

chickelit म्हणाले...

People had the same concern about Sarah Palin's voice link. I'm pretty sure that I could search the Althouse archives and find a usual suspect voicing the same concern in the comments.

I'll like her voice immensely when she finally says "I plead guilty to all charges, Your Honor".

Its horrible, when she's loud as during a campaign event, its especially bad. If that were the only thing I could say was wrong...

Nag, nag, nag. I had to listen to her 20 years ago. I'm not so fond of her voice as she is.vista

Eckert sounded a little Marilyn Monroe-ish? Nice.

Nancy Grace notwithstanding, I think the worst American accent is the flat nasal Chicago accent. It matters not from what gender it is uttered.
I would say that 60s/70s Feminism seemed to encourage East coast Feminists to talk "manly," to eliminate the softer tones (which of course both men and women have deployed where appropriate to achieve social/sexual/political/commercial results).
Feminists invented a hyper-masculine Man as Satan, and set out to imitate him.

averagejoe म्हणाले...

I think she should keep her Amos 'N Andy "Ah ain't no wise tahrred" voice all the time. At least then we could laugh at her, when she says things like "Ah dun brung youz a reset button, mistah Putin." Or "At dis point in tahm, what diff'ence do it make?" Or "Ah ain't gwan have no reporters be pawin' tru ma papers. We iz da prezdent!"

AlbertAnonymous म्हणाले...

Oh for the love of God, who the F**K cares about the sound of her voice?

More gender discrimination code words and war on women BS.

It's not the sound of her voice that bothers me, its the self-important, arrogant, "vote me into my well deserved place in history"-laden, but otherwise useless drivel she spills with it.

RecChief म्हणाले...

Ya think maybe it's not the sound of voice so much as the lies that are carried on that sound?

fivewheels म्हणाले...

Elspeth Reeve ... where do I know that name? Oh yeah, she's the one who thought it was ethically responsible to edit things written by her husband, that soldier-libeling liar Scott Thomas Beauchamp. If anyone needs a jog to the memory.

Yeah, I care about her opinion.

Meade म्हणाले...

I like the sound of Carly's voice.

Carol म्हणाले...

It's not really her voice per se but her delivery. She just ain't got it. She's not in the moment, it's all contrived. She's no worse than Ike or LBJ or dozens of other presidents but nowadays you expect more.

I loved the sound of Thatcher's voice. But then she wasn't our pol, she was someone else's. And I know the libs in the UK hated her voice and everything else about her.

Loved Palin but hated her voice. I figured she could easily get coaching on that, but I guess she blew it off.

They have to bring it to the "women are supposed to be nice and good" stupidity that feminists like to complain about.

Most female public speakers do not have breathy voices. For goodness sake.

That may be the gender issue. As a guy about Ann's age, I am sensitive to female voices. Luckily the women around me have nice alto voices - except for my partner when she is yelling downstairs for me. And, her voice increasing in volume also seems to increase in pitch, which means that not only do I have a harder time understanding her, it also is sometimes almost painful.

Of course, Hillay! is not expecting me to vote for her, and really, isn't expecting that many older white male votes, so maybe this is just fine. But, it is sometimes painful listening to her - and she has a more comfortable voice than many women (including Gov. Palin). Still, it doesn't help things to pretend that it is all in our minds - it isn't.

Michael K म्हणाले...

Shrillery ? How can you say that ?

sean म्हणाले...

I don't like pantsuits. My wife never wears those. Or my daughter. They're dorky. And dowdy. That's one reason why I don't like Hillary Clinton. It's not her voice, which I don't think I've ever heard, because I don't watch TV, except sports.

SGT Ted म्हणाले...

The constant sucking up to and excuse making for Hillary is getting old.

SGT Ted म्हणाले...

What's with the acting as if the only opposition to Hillary is over superficial bullshit?

Hillary is a fucking crooked, entitled, nasty person who thinks she deserves the Presidency, simply because of who she is.

She is the epitome of the elitist snob who think she is fit to run other peoples lives and that the law doesn't apply to her.

Wilbur म्हणाले...

Is there anything in her life not drenched in deceit?

From her sham marriage of convenience, to the identity of the father of her child, to her cattle future investing brilliance, to her deleting mails ... it's difficult to see why anyone but a rabid partisan could accept her explanations when offered.

The list of reasons why she is so professionally and personally distasteful is lengthy. Her voice or speaking style ranks about 150th on that list. But it is on the list.

Ah yes, that stupid cunt. Why does she still have a job?

chickelit म्हणाले...

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that Hillary Clinton has only ever represented other people's interests. If you're one of those "others" then fine, vote for her. But she's made it perfectly and abundantly clear that she cares most deeply for only a subset of Americans. She's like Barack Obama who despite being half white has only ever championed his black half. Ditto for Hillary. She's just a feminist's candidate. At this point, there's no reason to take her candidacy seriously.

dbp म्हणाले...

If you do not enjoy the sound of a shrieking harridan it is probably because you are threatened by powerful women.

Jay Vogt म्हणाले...

My mother-in-law grew up about 2 miles east of Park Ridge (where Ms. Clinton grew up) and is about a dozen years older than her. My wife grew up about 2 miles west of Park Ridge and is about a dozen years younger than the former FLOTUS/S-NY/SoS. So, to me, Ms. Clinton's flat north-side Chicago accent is what I hear all the time. It's much subtler that the broad south-side "da berz" accent, but it's distinctive nonetheless.

When I'm in the other room and I hear her voice on TV or the radio, I think it must be an in-law of mine.

Just by the tone, when I hear it, I instinctively assume that I'll be getting directions on how to do something that I'm already doing or corrected in some other way.

The worst accent in the US is the south Milwaukee accent. It is an unnerving blend of the worst of Chicago and the worst of Minnesota. It is the one accent that I just cannot listen to.

Hagar म्हणाले...

Perhaps because all her voices sounds like a talentless actress trying to follow her voice consultant's advice for that speech?

To be fair, given her experience with Bill and other Democrat "men", it's not too surprising. Maybe even understandable.

chickelit म्हणाले...

She's just a feminist's candidate. At this point, there's no reason to take her candidacy seriously.

I mean, she's the anointed D candidate. There's no reason for her to keep tacking left, is there? Despite America's Politico's BS, she'll never win a general election spouting the anti-male stuff. Why not drop it and run for the country instead of halving it all.

A clever Republican will start to save these sorts of write ups. And studiously watch the talking heads attack anyone who disagrees with Hillary as a dog whistle or code for hatred of women.

Then you take all the times Republicans criticized Obama and were called racists. When they didn't want to go along with Obamacare, racists. Iran? Racists. Raising the minimum wage? Racists.

Then you pound home the message, "Do you want another unaccountable President? Do you want another President that you must disagree with or be labeled a hater? Elect a Republican. At least you can openly disagree with a Republican."

Brando म्हणाले...

Here's a tip for the Hillary apologists--maybe it's not her voice but the content of what she says that people don't like.

We're not fond of what Bill has to say either, so take your charges of sexism and shove 'em.

damikesc म्हणाले...

Jason म्हणाले...

It's poorly trained. Voices can be trained. Hers isn't.

There are techniques involved. And you have to protect your voice, if you do a lot of public speaking.

You also have to be in control of your own emotions.

That's not something she does well, either.
