Marquette University puts up a mural honoring a convicted cop murderer who escaped from prison and fled to Cuba.

"The mural caught the attention of one of Marquette's most vocal critics, John McAdams. McAdams was an associate professor of political science until he was suspended for publicly criticizing a teaching assistant last year on his blog for how she handled a discussion of gay marriage in her class...."

On Saturday, McAdams blogged about the mural, Michelle Malkin Charlie Sykes picked up the story, and:
On Sunday evening, Marquette's communications department tweeted out a link to a brief statement that said the mural "in a remote area of campus" was coming down. The mural is inside the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center on an upper floor of the Alumni Memorial Union.
McAdams responds to the response on his (nicely designed!) blog:
It's quite possible they just heard of the mural, since they can hardly keep track of everything that occurs on campus. In fact, the bureaucrats who run the University spend most of their time holed up in Zilber Hall, talking to each other, and don't get out much...

What Marquette has done is to install bureaucracies to cater to the demands of politically correct victim groups — or more property people claiming to represent politically correct victim groups. In those places — the "diversity" bureaucracies, Student Affairs, Campus Ministry and so on — a very narrow and insular worldview prevails...

But worse still, the higher administration doesn't fully comprehended what they have put in place. Rather, the top administrators are proud of their "initiatives" about "diversity" and "inclusion" and "gender and sexuality."  They have pandered to the politically correct, and now are embarrassed at what the politically correct have done.

You can't expect Administrators to know, actually know, what's going on on their very own Campus. Not unless you give them a pay raise.

Whoa. Coloring pictures of female genitalia.

There isn't Indian Red anymore in the Crayola box.

Also there's the outside the lines problem, not to mention natural variety.

The good thing about contrarian murals like that is they keep down the graffiti.

My alma mater has been stepping in it lately.

With that said, the 4th floor of the MU union is a desolate place. Most students never set foot up there more than once or twice.

The excuse from the organization of "we didn't do proper research" should always get professional staff with these organizations at a university immediately fired -- research is what academics do.

LOL that was a good one! Research is what academics did. STEM academics still do do research but I believe it is hard to find [meaningful] research going on elsewhere and STEM would not be caught anywhere near that center.

Hahahaha....yes, very nicely designed. Perhaps others might ponder the virtue of section headers both for visual impact and textual continuity.

Todd, I was doing some petard hoisting.

Every academic in the State of Wisconsin as part of the PR blitz about proposed UW system budget cuts has been claiming that they research every waking hour of the day to the point they don't have time to teach classes -- MU academics have been right there with them in solidarity.

I guess the PhD in charge of this center is the only one who doesn't spend her time "researching".

Indeed.

They have how dozens of useless administrators?

But they should not have hired the sort of leadership for the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center that would allow this to happen.

This is why college is so expensive.

What? Chesimard and not Mumia?

Talk about countercultural...

What if they threw a party for Lenin's Mummy on tour and nobody came.

Socialist Propaganda cannot compete with the social media anymore.

And greatly expand their staff! No longer is having a Third Deputy Assistant to the Vice Dean of Diversity and Jelly Donuts adequate to handle the demands being placed on college administrators. They need Fourth and Fifth Deputy Assistants plus new positions to create employment opportunities for graduates with useless Angry Studies degrees.

"Academic freedom" and "free speech" (Now out-of-favor at MU and most universities) would require the maintaining of that Mural--And, the protection of side-by-side murals "honoring" the KKK,Nazi Party and the like ISIS (Especially graphic ones focused on their view of homosexuality).

I know they put this in there to make it seem like it's not a big deal, but I read "in a remote area" to mean "this is what we really think."

This didn't just happen, it wasn't an accident. A lot of planning and some resources went into this mural and, regardless of where they put it, the fact that it's there at all tells you something about their mindset.

The relations between blacks and police are hostile and marked by distrust. There is no better way to bridge this gap than by honoring a convicted, unrepentant cop killer. You can make persuasive arguments for throwing rocks and bottles filled with urine at the police. These tactics certainly have their place in our quest for peace and reconciliation, but there's no better way to achieve harmony and understanding than by honoring Mumia and Chesimard.

We're starting to make the list of schools we'd like our older son to look at - and by that I mean "spend 30 minutes on their website and tell us what you think" ... in an effort to put a shorter list together to visit during his sophomore and junior years. Some schools do a great job of crossing themselves off the list; I really appreciate how much easier it makes things for me.

Too bad the administrators at Marquette don't know how easy it is to use Google, Yahoo, Bing and Wikipedia.

On the other hand, I'm a little surprised a mural would be whitewashed just like that without some kind of due process beyond availing themselves of a search engine at last. I guess since it's a private institution....

Assata Olugbala Shakur belonged to the Black Liberation Army (BLARMY). For some enterprising young man out to make a killing, law enforcement authorities in the US have put a $2 million bounty on her fro.

I'm all in favor of murals depicting heroes of the Soviet Revolution.

They were real men of deeds.

Some hints:

1. Look at construction over the past 10 years. If a lot of new buildings have gone up and enrollment is flat or declining, stay clear. They're going to face a debt crisis sooner or later.

2. If they talk more about their luxuries like rock climbing walls than about academics, look elsewhere.

3. Try to determine how many undergraduate classes the professors actually teach. In many colleges, the professors are so busy with their "research" that they seldom bother to teach, especially lowly undergrads. Related - find out if the school's primary focus is on education or on research. If it's on research, your son will spend a lot of time being taught by teaching assistants (grad students).

4. Try to find out if the schools have "speech codes", "free speech zones", or an Angry Studies department.

Larry J, thanks! Right now the child's own list consists of:

The University of Texas at Austin

and he thinks Mom and Dad are really, really irritating for talking about other schools at all. Teenagers are ever so flexible. Like insisting on vegetables and brushing one's teeth, all of this research falls into the "you'll thank me later" category of parenting.

It is obvious they need a campus office of 'politically correct shepherds' who's only job is to read all the campus murials, billboards, graffiti, etc, and give 'guidance' to the students who express themselves maybe a bit to much.

Nother 10 paid bureaucrats out to do it.

Actually, I could see the above happening. However, if you put one of Charles Koch or Ronald Reagan? That'd be beyond the pale.

Ha! Sounds familiar. The school that offered our daughter by far the sweetest financial ride was one that her mother insisted on adding to the list.
