The show on video never did translate very well, to actually being there.
Being in NYC and walking from the hotel to the show and being blown away by so many insane asylums leaving their doors open every night, and the inmates interacting with innocent tourists.
Going inside the theater was like sensory overload. The music was loud, more than it was harmonic. Yelling more than singing. All designed to assault you like a Catholic going to their first Mardi Gras.
It took me a good month to wash the filth off of my body. I used the car wash pressure gun to clean my shoes.
The drug dogs were growling at me at the airport, as my clothes all smelled like the sweat of the 50 drug addicts, who were breathing on me in the surrounding seats.
My wife was never groped so much in the elevators, and on the sidewalks; however, complaining about it all the way home, her first thought the next morning was "we need to do that again."
It is funny to me- Letterman peaked in quality just before the big Tonight Show battle to replace Carson. I don't think Letterman ever recovered from that loss, and only grew more bitter as time went on. I hadn't watched his show in the last 10 years much, but did so just recently, and was amazed at just how non-humorous he was, and that his interviewing quality was also degraded from what I remembered from the late 80s. What a sad way to go out.

Letterman should have retired 10 years ago, before he turned into a bitter, boring old Leftist.

Good gag; too bad Jerry didn't come up with that himself. They're both over the hill, and should have retired decades ago.
The show was only good the first few years when Letterman's then girlfriend was head writer. When she left the show went downhill and never recovered.
