The dogs killed a raccoon this morning. It was pretty gross.

Starting my seedlings today. I see my wife has left me a hint in the form of a packet of watermelon seeds.

While I was working in they garden, I almost stepped on a rake, which made me think of Hillary's campaign.

Lovely! May I ask what you're growing?

In New England, the wintered geraniums are snapping back; the cuttings taken last Fall also took. Summer squash seeds saved from previous meals are doing wonderfully. Mustard greens reseeded and are coming up like gangbusters.

Am very disappointed with the boughten seeds' results: nothing from the cukes or green peppers. Zucchini with white leaves; anemic little tomatoes.

It's probably necessary to wait a little bit before sowing the lettuce and other other greens, as night temps are still hovering around freezing.

"Well said, well said," answered Candide, "Now, back to the Garden."

@Be

Meade says: Sun Gold tomatoes, basil, chili peppers.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Radishes, kale, and baby spinach in the planter.

And that's 7 or 8 kinds of chili papers.

Seven or Eight different kinds of Chilis?! I can't even imagine.

"Hot Pepper, Gua-Hilo Pepper, Jalapeno Pepper, Scotch Bonnet Pepper, Sweet Pepper, Cayenne Pepper..."

I'm curious Ann, does Meade start his seedlings outdoors in small greenhouse type containers, or does he start them inside and put the trays out during the day? Tim

Thanks, Tim Wright, for asking that.

(Have been doing the latter most years.)

@tim

He put the out when it's warm enough, sometimes with a special heating pad underneath, but he brings it in when it's below 45.

This is what is needed around here to get a good crop of tomatoes.

He puts them...

(Sorry.) I was told by a cousin that I needed to soak my tomato seeds in a bleach solution for a while to help with sprouting? I guess it makes sense, give that there are some seeds one needs to score to help out the germ.

Am putting the sad little tomato sprouts on a towel on the radiator tonight. Am hoping that that'll help.

Love Sun Gold tomatoes, and have been planting them from seed since '99. I've planted 15 varieties of tomatoes, 10 different basils, and 10 varieties of peppers this year.

Planting seeds is addicting.

Commenting at Althouse requires an almost different way to looking at comments than is done with the threads at Legal Insurrection or Powerline. For LI and PL, we can directly response to another's statements, which can be interesting, and can also cause some heartache, and headaches too.

The differences are fascinating, in style perhaps, yet in subtle ways too. Also, the tenor of these three blogs in combination, and separately, is much more fascinating; it makes for a busy blog read day.

Flipped over to Fox News and they are showing some unfunny comedienne at the DC correspondents dinner. Ugh, it was painful. And she had her nose firmly up Hillary's nether regions when she wasn't making fun of all the GOP candidates. It was so bad Obama was obviously fake laughing at the lame jokes.

Didn't HRC try to start small? Except she has positioned her royal self as the 800 lb. gorilla in the Dimocrat party blocking all other candidates. This is a sad commentary on their politics IMHO.

Since this is designated as a café post, I'd just like to add that I read Caitlin Flanagan's review of Krakauer's new book Missoula in this morning's Washington Post, which turns out to be as bad as everyone thought it would be.

Among other things Krakauer writes "portentiously" about the rape of a girl named Allison Huguet by a football player named Beau Donaldson. Except that Donaldson was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape. Those of us who thought that Krakauer's book was going to be a hack job, well we were wrong. Based on Flannagan's review, it's way worse than that.

However Flannagan demonstrates that she is not at one with the feminist zeitgeist when she writes in her review that young women who get drunk and invited strong young men into their beds for making out bear at least some responsibility for what happens next. Oh dear. I expect to see poor Caitlin Flannagan dangling under a street lamp somewhere.
