Pretty small, I'd say, but coincidences do happen.
One would think a former IMSA Camel GT driver would know better than to tailgate, presuming that's root cause. A friend was a mechanic for Jenner Racing circa early-mid 80s.
Today, I saw someone talking on the telephone while ice skating.
The article said he was being pursued by 5 paparazzi at the time of the accident, and someone took those pictures of the accident itself.
I hope they (the paparazzi) get charged with manslaughter if indeed it is shown they somehow were complicit in this accident ocurring.

Well, I suppose I'm obliged to be the first to say it: Jenner's transition has proceeded so far that he's driving like a woman.
Well everything real or imagined with that crew is used as a stunt to make money. Being followed by the paparazzi is what they've fostered and thrived on. You can't just decide to shut it off.

From a look at the photos, this is more evidence that if you are in an accident, the person in the bigger car is going to have a better outcome.

The photo sequence (presumably all shot by one camera) show how far both cars moved during and after impact. I'll bet they're withholding even more grisly photos.

I'm going out on a limb here to express some sympathy for Bruce. The average person, if married to that lunatic wife of his, and constantly surrounded by the media circus she has created would spend a lot of time very distracted. More than one person will end up paying for that level of lunacy.

He used to drive race cars in his younger days.....after the Olympics.
Ann - if someone rearends you, your car's brakes won't be sufficient to stop your car and the rear vehicle. The force is transmitted forward. That is basic physics, so yes it is an excuse unless you were driving recklessly.
Your brakes are designed to stop your vehicle, not two vehicles. Umless it's just a tap, you are going to be pushed far forward of your normal stopping distance - or, as this woman was, pushed out of your lane if the impact is at all off-kilter.
Jenner was towing a vehicle, so almost certainly couldn't stop - but that's his fault and look at the mass that was plowing into the woman's car relative to hers. If you are towing a vehicle you have to compensate - other drivers aren't able to do it for you.

Thanks for the physics updates. I really don't know how much space you are supposed to leave to account for what might happen behind you or how causes of multiple rear endings are resolved. Obviously, there are these multi car pile ups. I have never looked into how the cases were adjudged.

if your foot is not firmly on the break as it my not be if you are slowing but not stopped the force of the impact transfers to you. reaction time plus your foot's inertia being lifted by the impact would all factor into things.

Jenner, who was driving a black Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle that was hauling a trailer carrying an off-road vehicle, then rear-ended the Lexus.

PCH is a tough drive. People drive inconsistently as they stare out at the ocean. There's also a lot of sudden stopping to make turns for parking along the street or pulling into driveways.

Too soon to tell, but it kinda looks like he was turning to the right to avoid impact & wound up hitting the left rear of the car in front of him, which might explain why the impact sent it into oncoming traffic. If he'd hit her squarely, he might just have pushed her forward (unless her wheels were turned to the left for some reason).
