Imagine a trial of 183 people...

... and giving them all the death penalty.

Just imagine how bad it would have been if Egyptians were forced to live under the totalitarian police state we Americans suffer under! Plus our "rapey" culture makes it even worse!

You mean Seattle had 183 assistant coaches and they ALL made the wrong call? They deserve death!

Marshawn Lynch one in five scoring from the one this season.

I know that stat Tim...but still...he's how you got there.

Using the "unfair sentence" tag shows insensitivity to another culture and its laws. They have every right to devalue life as they see fit.

I see in the article they have the right to appeal; not sure if that happens before or after the sentence is carried out.

Where they guilty of "Murder"? Did they have defense council? Was there some measure of "due process" in accordance with the civil laws of Egypt?

Clyde said...

Oh, come on! The article says that "all are permitted to appeal." I'm sure that they don't have a red rubber stamp that says "Denied!" in Arabic squiggles. Yeah, right.

I can understand a pass play, but not THAT pass play. Like everyone else, I would have just handed the ball to Marshawn.

But if I were to call a pass play on second and goal from the one, it would have been a fade to the outside to one of the tall receivers, i.e., low chance of an INT. If that didn't work I would hand it to Marshawn on third down. If that didn't work, I would call timeout and hand it to Marshawn again on fourth down.

Wait, what was this post about again?

In 1862 US Army courts tried 393 Sioux after the Sioux uprising and sentenced 303 of them to be hanged. This was too much for President Lincoln, who pardoned 265 of them, but left 38 as a offering to public opinion, and these 38 were duly hanged in a mass hanging ceremony on December 26, 1862, in Mankato, Minnesota.

Tell me this play doesn't have touchdown written all over it until suddenly id didn't.

You know how the Red Sox lost to the Mets a series they never should have lost? They played a hurt Bill Buckner because "he deserved to be on the field" as one of the guys who got them there.

For most of the world OUR legal system is the odd one. We endlessly argue over whether the likes of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev can get a fair trial; we put him on the cover of 'Rolling Stone.'

If he were to get the death penalty it would take decades to go through the courts; he will outlive many of the family members of the victims.

Elsewhere, he'd already be in an unmarked grave.

I say split the difference and no more than 91.5 people can be sentenced to death at once.

ISIS pales in comparison to some of the shit we did. I know. This is how nations have always been built. Show me a nation anywhere on this planet that is larger than the growth of a single tribe or group of related tribes could have made it, and where those tribes are on their original land. I bet outside of the Pacific Islands, on cannot be found.

Not that I don't think we should fight ISIS, I do, we should fight them like we mean to win. Just let's no pretend that they are some kind of historical anomaly.

It's the deterrence theory of the death penalty.

The missing voice theory doesn't work if you're not a civilized society.

It is "Lakota" and not "Sioux". They waged war against the USA as noted in Section-III, Article-3 of our Constitution.

Now, if only Nidal Hasan and other domestic camel jockeys would be subject to the same dance.

Shame upon you Althouse! Where you asleep when they explained multiculturalism? Our American culture, which sobs all over the murderers (ignoring the victims), is no better than a culture that condemns people to death in wholesale lots. Surely that was explained to you.

Quaestor said...

Tagging this thread with "unfair sentence" is questionable, since the article does not enumerate or explain the options of the court. We Americans tend to interpret the world through the lens of our own culture, consequently CNN's web editors see no need to discuss Egypt's legal system or judicial traditions. We expect judges to have at least some latitude in sentencing the convicted, but that may not be the expectation, or even the law in Egypt

183 people will be asked to put their head in a noose and stand on a trap door.

This is all so familiar. Egypt, mass sentencing, right to appeal. Didn't Althouse blog this or something nearly identical some time ago?

Come on, Quaestor...didn't you see that "this land is your land" advert last night on the Superbowl? Woody Guthrie applies everywhere.

Please disregard the comma splice in that last clause.

Yes. Last March: "Egyptian court sentences 529 persons to death after a mass trial."

Yes, I did. It made me barf my potato chips. Every SB ad I saw, with one notable exception, was an insult to the intelligence. Considering the dollar costs of these ads one would think the sponsors would be more discriminating.

I haven't heard of a mass execution in Egypt lately. (There were several drumhead trails and mass executions in the wake of Nasser's 1952 coup, but that's history.) It would be instructive to know the status of those cases.

Wikipedia in its effort to be "even-handed" distorts the concept beyond meaningfulness. Typical.

Murdering and beheading hundreds of civilians? When did that happen in US history?

Judging from the article it appears they are going to swing for being cop killers. If that is the case who is in favor of cop killers?

Achilles said...

If they actually do it We should put them in charge of dealing with boko haram and ISIS.

If that's how Obama was emptying Gitmo, I could get on board.

Egypt is fighting the Muslim Brotherhood - you know, the guys that spawned Al Quaeda? Maybe Al-Sisi (who is clearly no sissy) is trying to show the Arab masses that his brand of moderate Islam is the Strong Horse.
