The oldest movie star dies.

"Luise Rainer, a star of cinema's golden era who won back-to-back Oscars but then walked away from a glittering Hollywood career, has died. She was 104."

Here's how it looked, getting an Oscar in 1936. You get 3 takes, if you need them:

And here's a bit of "The Great Ziegfeld":

Oy, reduced to appearing in "The Love Boat" in 1984. I wonder whether they tried to get her for Dancing with the Stars.

Wonder how long she'd've lived had she stayed in Hollywood.

Althouse obit posts... I'm starting to like them.

Her role in The Good Earth uses her face more than her voice.

They would never cast a movie like that now, using two Occidentals to play Chinese leads, but it's not too hard to suspend disbelief for the viewer.

She seemed a lot like LaAlthouse meeting Meade in that Great Ziegfeld clip. I can see Meade dressed in those clothes commenting on the Blog and the cute Professor asking him back.

I don't remember Miss Rainer's appearance on The Love Boat, alas.

But that's okay, because I'll never forget this.

So who is the oldest star now? Olivia de Haviland?

Both in quantity and quality, she seems to have led a blessed life. Most of us don't even win one Academy Award, but she won two in a row. People still talk about her performance in Ziegfeld and deservedly so. She was quite charming. I wonder if Peter Sellers copied her accent for the Clouseau role.

Thanks for the Love Boat clip Bill. Besides Miss Rodgers, I also see Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Dina Merrill.

I think as a kid it was Chips, love boat then fantasy island.

Absolutely cringe worthy!!

Hilarious. Loved the guys' dancing.

Here she is in 1997, in the movie The Gambler.

"There are no small roles, only small actors."

"If you aren't acting, you aren't an actor."

She was hot. I expect to see her tonight, added to "TCM Remembers".

Sure, two sequential Oscars and she quit early.

Still, Myrna Loy is my favorite.
