"The girl’s family claimed she didn’t know about the arrangement her father made with her future husband..."

"If they told her, they feared, she would run away. A group of men from the tribe came to collect her and led her to a two-day ceremony in the village."

I'm interested in Sandra Fluke's take on this.

There is such a thing as good and evil, not all beliefs are equally valid, some cultures are not worth preserving.

So are we supposed to celebrate cultural diversity or not?

Don't want to be judgemental about these things.

Tank ayon kay ...

Gotta respect other cultures. This is what they've always done. Tradition. Who are we to judge? Kenyans for Kenya. No reason to think they don't have the same average intelligence as the Japanese (that would be racist). Japs have some strange eccentricities. So do Kenyans. Black power. Live and let live. I'm circumcised myself (GAAAAAA TMI TMI TMI), so who am I to criticize. Certainly we Jews can't criticize circumcision can we? We have a cultural tradition and so do they.

Would it be OK if we opposed migration from this tribe to the US?

And yet if I put a girl in the trunk of my car I'm the bad guy.

I am Laslo.

Tank has a thought. Maybe this story is just made up.

Heartbreaking.

Is this some kind of attack on the president?

I feel there's subtle racism in this thread, and perhaps way too much Euro-centric patriarchal judgment going on.

It's been established that Global Rape Culture is heighened by colonial enslavement and economic predation.

A chapter of 'Dreams From My Father,' and 8 hours of NPR should get you back where you need to be.

madAsHell ayon kay ...

I'm surprised this story runs so soon after the Rolling Stone rape story.

madAsHell ayon kay ...

Soooo....on one hand we have to be inclusive, but on the other hand we must judge this behavior to be wrong.

I'm having trouble keeping up.

Gahrie ayon kay ...

Yeah...but do the women get free birth control and access to abortion?

Do they get paid as much as the men?

Do they have a Title IX?

Does Kenya allow gay marriage?

I, for one, find it creepy to put myself in the place of the photographer. He seems much more intrigued, and interested in capturing the event and making it visually interesting, as if he were watching or producing a film, than horrified by what's happening to these children.

Looks like these girls are now fully qualified to be UW-Madison students, maybe even Law students. They have been given the full treatment, so that nothing else worse can now happen to them.

But remember, all cultures are of equal value, or so the Left repeatedly tells us (what utter nonsense! only a highly educated person could believe it).

"watching or producing a film"

Empathy porn, perhaps.

Aw shucks! It is only another "attack on women"!

As long as her tribe doesn't waterboard anyone. Also, this has to be the fault of the whites in America.

It's clearly a practice to be deplored. The tricky part is finding just the right way to deplore it without sounding condescending or racist. Probably there is no way, and the best thing to do about the problem is to ignore it. In the hierarchy of evils, there is no greater sin than racism....This is a one day story. Tomorrow we'll read about drunken white frat boys. You don't have to mince words when it comes to drunken white frat boys.

We ice people have much to learn from our enlightened sun brethren.

Dr.D: "Looks like these girls are now fully qualified to be UW-Madison students, maybe even Law students. They have been given the full treatment, so that nothing else worse can now happen to them"

Not really.

Their victimization did not come at the hands of white, western, Christian male types. Thus their hardships can be readily overlooked and/or ignored.

Further, if these gals think they are going to get any support from the American left, they should first have a conversation with Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Hmmm, maybe these gals can find one of now approximately 17 million left wing writing fabulists who will construct a more "useful" narrative with which these gals can derive some support from the left.

Got THAT right.

"More than 100 young women took part in the ceremony, which included a ritual where the girls punch a young bull into submission."

That's fair, isn't it?

stlcdr ayon kay ...

Haven't we been here before? It all sounds so familiar.

Regardless, if you want your coexist stickers and cultural diversity, you have to take the good with the bad. And to be sure, there's some pretty bad 'cultures' out there.

For any leftist idealists planning to broaden their horizons (since they are, after all, in tune with their limited experiences but want to desperately show how accepting they are), before you step outside your 5 mile culturally diverse campus, the real world will hurt you and kill you, and no one will care.
