ADDED: Ryan might be thinking: 2016 is a good year for a Wisconsinite, but a bad year for a member of Congress to win the presidency. We need a governor....

Fair enough. I personal like the guy but wonks don't generally make good presidential candidates, especially in the GOP.
He is smart to get out of the way. Everyone has seen what Scott Walker is willing and able to do to those who stand in his way, and Scooter has his laser-like focus on winning the White House for himself.
Ryan is smart to try new career roles. Playing the genuinely serious boy idealist has a sell by date.

I know the campaign begins today (Heck, my own guy, Gary Johnson, declared he's running for the 2016 Libertarian nomination just this week).

I haven't thought much of Paul Ryan since roughly one day after Mitt Romney picked him as VP. He somehow disappeared into a lackluster campaign apparatus.
No to Mitt Romney. He blew a winnable race and subjected America to "4 MORE YEARS!" Not only did he fail, but he failed in the area that was supposed to be his strength--management. There's no reason to give him another chance.

I can't remember the last time the GOP had such an open (no "front runner") contest. Polar opposite from the Democrats who are set for a coronation.
Good. The budget has always been Ryan's strong suit. He'll be fantastic in that role.

He's better toughen up significantly regardless of whether he runs or not.s
Any VP candidate who sits there and listens to Joe Biden accuse republicans of "betting against America all the time" without engaging with both barrels has no place on any ticket.
Obama won Wisconsin, Ryan's home state, in 2012. There is no recovering from that.
I don't get the impression that Ryan is all that interested in being President. He seems like more of a policy wonk.

Paul Ryan would have been my pick for presidential nominee last time around. I was excited when he became the VP candidate - just as I was excited when Ryan's first political mentor joined Bob Dole on the ticket in 1996. Ryan's boost to the ticket, it seems to me, turned out about the same.
While I'm at it: I still can't believe the exchange in the VP debate when Ryan warned of Iran progressing toward nukes, and Biden effortlessly fended him off: Even if they get the material, they don't have a bomb to put it in!
I don't expect a domestic policy wonk to be a nuclear SME, but if you're going to talk about a country going nuclear, it's worth being aware that getting the fissile material in hand seems to have been the crux of every nuclear program so far. No nation that I know of has ever had >critical mass of fissile material, then stalled out for lack of a workable bomb design.
So Biden made an absurd point that sounded convincing, and Ryan, who raised the issue, couldn't point out the catch. And the casual independent concludes that the Obama administration is wisely not getting spun up, and threatening military action, when they don't have to.

Boss Walker has complete control of this state and even people in his own party are afraid to cross him.
I continue to believe Romney is the man but he would have to do better courting religious conservatives. A couple of million stayed home in 2012 resulting in the mess we have now. Go figure.
