Author asks the Green Bay Packers to stop selling his book on Vince Lombardi... because it has a foreword written by Bill Cosby.

"A quick reply came from Gabrielle Dow, the team's vice president of marketing and fan engagement. The books were pulled, she said."
"In this ever increasing environment of awareness in which the National Football League is taking a strenuous stance against domestic abuse and sexual assault, removal of the book in all forms would be an appropriate course of action, in my opinion," [Royce] Boyles wrote.
This might seem like a bold and selfless move by the author, censoring his own book, but the book, "Lombardi's Left Side," had co-authors — former players Herb Adderley and Dave Robinson — and Royce didn't ask them if they wanted the book withdrawn.
"I know their names are on the jacket, too, but so is mine," he told me. "I don't think you take a vote on integrity. If integrity is for sale at $26.95 a copy, I don't want to know about it."
The foreword was "written" by recording what Cosby said off the top of his head immediately upon being asked over the phone if he'd write a foreword: "Cosby said, 'Just turn on your tape recorder.'" Cosby had been childhood friends with Herb Adderley:
The rambling foreword talks about their days in school and athletics.
Which is probably why Cosby agreed to do it. He had ready material.
He doesn't get around to Vince Lombardi until the very end.
So maybe Adderley should have been consulted. Royce has other books about Lombardi, by the way.
"I can write another book," Boyles said. "But when they drop the lid on my coffin, I just hope that maybe somebody would say, 'He had a sliver of integrity anyway.'"
Here's the cover, note the size of the names on that list of authors:

Herb Adderley — who's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame — is 75 years old and played from 1961 to 1972.

ADDED: You can read the whole foreword by clicking on "Look Inside" at the Amazon page for the book. The book is about Adderley and Robinson. That's why it's called "Lombardi's Left Side." Adderley was the left cornerback, and Robinson was the left linebacker. I'm reading a little of the book, right after the foreword: "Two great black men shut down the left side of the football field and opened up the right side of our minds." That strongly suggests that Boyles is the sole author.

Falling on one's own sword, so to speak, in the cause of political correctness against the scandal du jour seems unworthy of the author. A simple statement in the public square can condemn the unproven charges while pointing to the good that Bill Cosby did. To the public who are banging their drums against Cosby, who may not be black enough for the cause, I remind the slathering hordes of recently defeated democrats; "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

If he valued the other two men as equals in the work his integrity would be displayed by his consulting with them, first.

He either didn't feel that they were that important to the work (subjects, yes, co-writers, nope), or he is grandstanding. I suspect both.

I was a little surprised by what you added about the book's content.

I would have guessed the book was about Lombardi being a liberal Democrat, who had experienced discrimination in his own life and was acutely sensitive to it.

I did not expect it to be about Adderley and Robinson.

David Hampton,

"Falling on one's own sword, so to speak, in the cause of political correctness against the scandal du jour seems unworthy of the author."

Boy, even "integrity" can be reconstructed to mean something else, if - all by your lonesome - you add the term "political correctness" to it, huh? Nifty trick, that.

"A simple statement in the public square can condemn the unproven charges while pointing to the good that Bill Cosby did."

We're almost up to 20 women - many who are grandmothers now - and you're still claiming they're liars. Wow. I guess you know "political correctness" when you see it. You're the expert.

"To the public who are banging their drums against Cosby, who may not be black enough for the cause, I remind the slathering hordes of recently defeated democrats; "let he who is without sin cast the first stone.""

Only white guys are saying Cosby "may not be black enough" for anything - that's their narrative for blacks rejecting what was tried and doesn't work - I don't any blacks who've done so. Even Hannibal Buress, who broke this open, still loves "Cos," so how much INTEGRITY do you white guys have, as they continue trying to advance their historical agenda of blaming blacks for the crimes whites have saddled us with?

You came so *close* with Cosby - but even he wouldn't stand with you:

No FOX News appearances for him - he hates those racists.

No claims blacks are "on the plantation" - because that very phrase, in the American context, is racist.

No claims American blacks were better off in Africa - or should go back if they don't like it - because the people who've say that are racists.

Long story-short, you're lying, and defending a man who blacks know waaay better than you do - because he loved us and not you. He may have been wrong in his old age, politically, but that doesn't mean anybody rejected him - Bill Cosby only confused us while giving us concern for his mental state - whites will just twist a lie for themselves, as usual, and claim that's reality.

I betcha - if it was your daughter complaining - "political correctness" would be the last words coming out of your mouth.

But it's not - so you'll use any weapon handy.

The question is - after 400 years of white interference in the black community dominated by white's self-serving lies - why would a white guy want to enter the black conversation at all?

And, since they like integrity so much, why are whites loathed to follow the story of this nation's crimes - which include such a massive number of rapes of black women black's skin is a different color - to it's logical conclusion?

Oh yeah - because whites in this country aren't into "political correctness".

Whites simply ain't got much stomach for - or experience with - honesty, of any kind, if you ask blacks.

Bill Cosby's "not,...black enough for the cause"? No - not as a rapist. His image is shit to us. Because we're good people.

You guys are still certainly white enough, though.

Your every lie proves it,...

All else being equal, this entire issue highlights the difference in treatment leftist whites get from their media and blacks get from the leftist white media.

The leftist whites are racist, blacks know it and extrapolate this fact erroneously to all whites in many cases, and the beat(ings) go on.

Christ said that the highest commandment was to love God and the second to love your fellow man, and that on this hung [or, in other words, to this end existed] all the prophets and the law.

So it makes perfect sense that as people turn away from the prophets and act in violation of God's laws, the amount of love in our society diminishes.

Or put plainly in another way: the end result of the violation of the 7th great commandment is not just more fun with more sex, not just one guy, Cosby, is now being accused by the mob. Rather the end result is a diminution of love, and a weakening of the cross beams to the other commandments, which only further diminishes the substructural foundation needed to foster and maintain a loving and merciful society.

The fact that the fun of free love is immediate while the resulting loss of love and mercy in a society sets in over time -generations even - does not lessen the momentum of the unintended results that are now coming.

Now the soup is starting to boil, and before this is over we'll all be helplessly looking around for some savior and some line of thinking that will clean up the mess and keep the wolves at bay.

And I know of only one philosophy that will get us out.

And it starts with insisting that those that are without sin among us only, be allowed to first take up the stone against Crosby.

Not for Clinton supporters. Clinton still aligns with liberal politics. Cosby veered into conservatism. Remember that Clinton got away with sexual harassment just a few years after liberals tried to destroy Clarence Thomas (who was only accused of asking for dates after it was indicated they were not wanted and engaging in some banter about sexual things in the workplace). Liberals had invested a lot in teaching Americans to take sexual harassment seriously, and then with Clinton, they pretended none of that mattered, even though we knew a lot more about what Clinton had done and the accusations against him were far worse.

Unknown,

"Crack, you've come out of the woodwork for this one. What does it mean to you exactly? There's a lot going on here. What's your math to push against Cosby?"

A lot going on. Let's unpack some:

20 women against "America's Dad"? Grandmothers. Stories stretch over decades. No money. No jail. A man with so much power his fans might do anything - and, still, they add their names? Look, like 400 years of open white supremacy on blacks vs. a few decades of not-so-open, I can do math:

He did that shit, and another black man handled it, because Cosby's scoldings didn't make sense.

Cosby's a "race man" - not a conservative as y'all think - so to blame blacks for being poor was old age talking, which it is since it's Booker T. Washington's turn-of-the-last-century's rejected ideas. We thought Cosby lost his mind. Until now.

His "pound cake speech," which started his crusade, began just as all this started emerging. Cos didn't "leave the plantation" - he never said white supremacy doesn't exist - and his words weren't received by blacks that way. They were evidence of him acting waaay out of character. That's key. He was rattled.

Anyway, I'm enjoying America having a rare moral moment, at least in most quarters. It feels good, everybody debating important issues, rather than whether J-Lo's butt defined the new thing.

Coming on the heels of Hoover's evil letter, and tape, to MLK (that made it to Coretta) and documented evidence the Mormon's Utah is really Joseph Smith, Inc.'s North Korea (I've been so wrong and y'all such good little drone boys) the status quo's "patriots" are being given a pretty decent thrashing by - say it with me - HISTORY.

And there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Go on, don't listen to me, check your history: America let 1000 Nazis into this place, and paid their bills - including Social Security - as it steadily worked to cut blacks out of the American Dream. But - hey - you liked the message Bill was selling so all better.

The man whites liked, to hide their racist ahistorical views behind, is undone by his own part in white supremacy - wanting to dominate white women. What a joke. What a sap. But typical of a black man of his era - minus the drug stuff. That's really weird.

So, all further proof this place is constructed on lies, of purity, innocence, and benevolence, with so many skeletons in it's closet, it's supporters don't dare air open it for fear - no, knowledge - of their own complicity.

As long as I don't have to live in shame of them for a while, because history's got my back. That's all I want. Some existential cover.

I'm right, and I know it - again - and that's my interest, and my day's comfort,...

Scotti says that in the years he worked for NBC during The Cosby Show's 1984-92 run, he paid out money orders to eight women, including Shawn Thompson, after Cosby gave him the cash to do so. At one point, Cosby asked Scotti to call up Donald Trump's brother to get an apartment for one of his women. Cosby had Scotti do his monthly money payouts up to $2,000 each to women the comedian was allegedly sleeping with, and Scotti held on to the money order receipts.

He was not speaking as a man sent to assure a group that racism did not exist, but as a man who sincerely believed that black people, through the ethic of "twice as good," could overcome."

- Ta-Nehisi Coates

Do whites ever consider why they enjoy Cosby's message - that blacks must be "twice as good" to be their "equal" - in America? Maybe it's because, like Cosby, they know white's discrimination is real - and enjoy keeping us working twice as hard to succeed? That is the status quo, as Bill Cosby explains it, and you're endorsing as the correct way to see things. Tell me:

What if we had to work "thrice as hard" to be the same - would you think that was a good statement, on American democracy, in 2014, too? Four times? Five? Obviously, working no harder than whites do is out of the question - white supremacy won't allow it.

White people can work at any rate they choose. No larger numerical needed. But blacks - twice as hard for the same paycheck - and, if you say that's not fair, "you're wrong" white people say. "Twice as hard" for blacks is The American Way they know - and will insist, without irony, that's what "All Men Are Created Equal" means.

It's conundrums, like this, that cause blacks to just stare blankly at white people - and, now, Cosby - wondering what's wrong with their minds.

BTW - Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle, have all publicly chastised Cosby for his bullshit without anyone claiming the black community excommunicated Cosby. Even the black community never claimed to have done so - it's just whites talking from the outside. Telling us what they "believe" without a single fact to back it up. You know:

Like when they were calling Obama "incompetent" for not freaking-the-fuck-out, with them, over a single case of ebola.

They never admitted he was right and they were wrong. Never admitted they were the incompetent ones. Never admitted their ignorance.

They were just happy to pretend the first black president didn't know more than whites did, and spread that message, far and wide.

No interest in the truth what-so-ever.

But they know it now.

They've got another massive conspiracy - a la birtherism, 9-11 truther, Benghazi, and all the rest - that'll explain everything. Again.

"Martin Luther King was a criminal. Rosa Parks was a criminal. Malcolm X was not just a criminal in his youth but regarded and treated as such by the FBI until the end of his life. Indeed, J. Edgar Hoover criminalized much of black leadership from Marcus Garvey to King to Malcolm to the Black Panthers for his entire career.

And Hoover did much more. When Viola Liuzzo was brutally murdered by white supremacists, Hoover's FBI spread rumors that she was heroin addict who liked to sleep with black men (a crime in several states.) The rumors had the intended effect:

... the July 1965 issue of The Ladies' Home Journal published a poll that asked if readers thought Liuzzo was a good mother. Fifty-five percent didn't. ("I feel sorry for what happened," said one woman in a focus group convened to talk about the Liuzzo story, "but I feel she should have stayed home and minded her own business.")

Why was Hoover so dead-set on criminalizing Liuzzo? Because Hoover himself was a criminal who'd placed an informant in the car with her murderers. The informant had cut his teeth beating the daylights out of Freedom Riders. Hoover did nothing to restrain him. Liuzzo's husband tried to defend her name. He later turned to drinking and died. Liuzzo's family sued the FBI and lost. Today the name of J. Edgar Hoover—an inveterate racist and scourge of black people—decorates the headquarters of the incorruptible FBI.

Even being technically within the law has not insured protection for black people. The Freedom Riders were not seeking new laws; they were trying to get the federal government to enforce a Supreme Court ruling already on the books. The response from law enforcement was to treat them like outlaws. The attorney general's office was essentially created to enforce civil rights for black people, but when called to actually enforce the law, Robert Kennedy denounced not the Southern police but the Freedom Riders, for producing "good propaganda for America's enemies." Meanwhile informants, ostensibly in his employ, were helping white supremacists wreak havoc.

All of this must be remembered the next time the police invoke "Stop Snitchin'"—the same police who've long maintained a blue wall of silence. The uncomfortable fact is that "The Law" in America has been—at best—a halting friend of black people, and more often a direct enemy."

But - hey - if Bill Cosby says that's the American Dream, and even persecution by the FBI is a problem that individual blacks working "twice as hard" can overcome - alone - he must be right.

White people said so,...

Michael,

"I work with a black guy who works half as hard and makes twice as much as I do so you are wrong about all blacks having to work twice as hard."

Because, like Cosby, one black guy stands in for - literally - millions of others we all see, every day.

Just insanity on parade,...

No. White people did not say that.

But everything Bill Cosby ever said critical of the black community is wrong. Because white women said so.

Martin Luther King was wearing a suit when he was shot in the face.

Please explain how the words "pull your pants up" changes that.

Keep the pants down low. That will show em.

Michael,

Hilarious - only a white man can say "White people did not say that" and then follow it up with "everything Bill Cosby ever said critical of the black community is wrong" and not realize he's contradicted himself.

And "Keep the pants down low. That will show em" is snark - which, I must assume, in white circles passes for an Einstein-worthy argument.

I swear, with such brilliant minds, if whites had to work "twice as hard" they'd still be living in caves,...

"I began to see the entire device—a method by which you exploit a people and then clean yourself of all responsibility. An act is committed—enslavement, for instance. The victims make a credible claim. The claim is disputed with poor logic. (“They have been taught Christian civilization, and to speak the noble English language instead of some African gibberish. The account is square with the ex‑slaves.”) The people making the claim eventually die. At that point the claim is acknowledged as having been credible, but because the claimants are dead, nothing can be done.

The counter-strategy to reparations has always been to run out the clock. It was true in the time of Callie House. It is true today. The vast majority of the responses to "The Case for Reparations" are not so much responses, but evasions. The respondents prefer to ignore the details of the claim ("The people to whom reparations were owed are long dead."), to ignore the facts of history ("What about...Japanese Americans, interned during World War II?") or to to simply flail around like a six-year-old ("OK. Whatever. Reparations scholarships to Middlebury for all!")

Understanding that those who could make a reparations claim were very much alive, I wanted to understand who the claim was being made against. One popular response to reparations is to say "I didn't own any slaves, so I can't be held responsible." Other versions of this include "My ancestors came over in 1920, I can't be held responsible." Or, "My great-great grandmother was half-black, I should not have to pay." The first flaw in this logic is to believe that the reparations claim is rooted in the allegedly distant past. I now knew that it wasn't. But the second flaw is to conceive of reparations as a claim made against individual white people, as opposed to American society itself.

Kim Forde-Mazrui's scholarly article "Taking Conservatives Seriously: A Moral Justification for Affirmative Action and Reparations" was crucial in understanding this question. The article notes that the state, necessarily, outlives its individual citizens. Americans pay for things, all the time, that they are not individually responsible for. If the "I didn't do it" argument was followed to its logical end, the state would effectively dissolve.

At that point I then felt I had argument."

Coates is a bore, crack. As are you. Plus a poor reader.

Whites have done pretty well for themselves. Even those who have lived far from slavery, in countries that never had slaves. That doesn't work well for your thesis about the white race.

dont think reparations are going to make it next January as you predicted. focused on paying Mexicans now.
