Not sure about the efficiency of raking the leaves only on the grass.
I'm of the school that says: Rake late, after you've traded leaves with your neighbors, but then, rake the whole yard. and only once :)

Serious question: Why isn't there a detached garage at Meadhouse? (I don't mean the guy who comments here). Was it torn down?
Rake, Ha! I just vacuumed up a pile of leaves the size of a Suburban, and started burning them Friday. The fire is still smoldering. I raked it this morning and there was still plenty of heat, and that is after it rained on the fire.
Next year maybe I will compost them. I just never get around to building something of the appropriate scale for a bin. Leaving them in a pile doesn't really seem to work for me.

Meade goes over to neighbors' yards, gets their leaves, and brings them back to our yards.

There is a garage on the ground level in the back, which is underground in the front. Those detached garages take so much room out of the backyard. We don't put the cars in the garage, though, but it's good for bikes and tools and so forth.
I like the 'strange new house'. It seems reasonably in keeping with the neighborhood without being a slave to the past.

You have a good idea, Richard — they should hire me to design their landscape for them. I'd cover the place in vines until no one could get in and no one could get out.

I like the neighborhoods that have a couple of off-beat houses in them. As a kid I thought that the people that live in such places must have more interesting lives than the rest of us. As an adult I appreciate the distinctiveness.
Next Hallowe'en, someone should make a giant papier-mache erection and tuck its tip between the cheeks of that house. You could make it seem an advertising stunt by hanging a sign on it: NEED LUBE? and adding the phone number of someone you don't like much.
