There is something to be said for European hedonism. I don't think I could do that for more than a month though. That would get old fast.
I do have to say, red wine in the morning sounds horrible.
If only he were a military historian, a fantastically prodigious writer, governmental leader (for multiple parties), stood up and led his country in its darkest hour and had an American mother he could have been another Churchill.
Since he called out Hollande and his socialist hordes for their insane tax policies we'll take him anyway.

I look forward to a couple of glasses of red wine with and after dinner. Sometimes I catch myself looking a bit too forward, and a bit too early in the day towards those glasses of wine, and I have to go cold turkey for a week or so just to assure myself things aren't getting out of hand.
That said, if it isn't a problem for Gerard, it certainly isn't a problem for me.

Champagne is great white wine, and usually only. $10 or so a bottle. But most people seem to avoid it go for a so so Chardonay @ $30 a bottle. Why do they fear Champagne, or is it an identity issue?
If you want to do this, by the way, Clos du Mont-Olivet Cotes du Rhone Montueil-La Levade (2011) is a great choice.

A good friend while I lived in Central Africa, a French doctor, had a similar pattern. When I would stop by to see him in the afternoon he would always offer me a drink, and have one himself, but I didn't know the extent of his drinking until going on a hunting safari with him. We would leave camp very early in the morning, before which he would have a small glass of red wine. I had a different view of the man, though, when I saw him pour half a bottle of wine into his canteen, then fill it to the brim with water. It was clear he didn't want me to see him do this, and when he realized I had seen it, he made some joke about it killing the malaria or something. I never remember seeing him drunk, but then maybe I couldn't make a good comparison because I never saw him sober.
Some mornings are too cold for Champagne, so red wine makes sense. Where's the grappa, though?

Whan I was but a wee apprentice the journeymen in the shop were, almost to a man, from Germany. When you arrived in the morning, either on your tool box or on the machine you were using the day before was a shot of schnapps.
To this day I can't stand the stuff.

This seems backwards to me. Although I hate Chardonnay so I haven't priced it lately.

Good for Depardieu. You got to die of something so why not make it something fun?
I remember reading "The Thin Man" by Dashiell Hammett and being astonished by the main characters' (Nick and Nora Charles) consumption of alcohol. They basically wake up in the morning, start drinking, and keep drinking all day and all night until they go to sleep. In between drinks they successfully solve a murder mystery.
Ernest Hemingway's novels often had the same vibe -- Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises seems to be drunk for pretty much the entire book (admittedly he has reason to be as the reader finds out).
Maybe spending your entire waking life semi-plastered was a thing that a lot of people did in the first part of the 20th century until the medical profession ruined it for all of us with their "health warnings." Gerard isn't a hopeless drunk -- he's simply traditional.
