Dogs allowed in outdoor areas of restaurants.

It's the law now in California.
The law, AB1965, sailed through the Senate and Assembly and was signed by Governor Jerry Brown, a dog owner himself, in August. Restaurants can choose to continue prohibiting dogs, and the law allows individual cities and counties to create their own ordinances banning them.

Pet welfare group Social Compassion in Legislation drafted and pushed for the law after the organization’s president, Judie Mancuso, was kicked out of a restaurant with her two rescue chihuahuas and became aware of the state prohibition. Reception to the new law has been positive across the board, she said.
It's a free market. It's not like the restaurants are banned from discriminating against ladies with chihuahuas. (Or is breed discrimination forbidden?)
The new law does not allow dogs to sit on seats or tables, prohibits contact between employees and dogs, and bans dogs from areas where food is prepared — “real common sense stuff,” Mancuso said.
That sounds like the dog can still be on the customer's lap or in a handbag on a seat. But, again, as long as the restaurant can make the rules, I see no problem with dog-friendly restaurants included in the options.

AND: Governor Brown's dog is a corgi.

Don Diego el Guapo

Not that corgi.

Do the dogs require their own wheelchair-accessible restroom?

Was it illegal before the passing of this law for a restaurant to allow dogs in the outdoor areas? If not, then why pass this law? To clog up the statute books with ever more junk legislation? Doesn't the state government have real issues to deal with?

MayBee म्हणाले...

In London dogs were pretty universally accepted at outside seating (except for some Halal restaurants that explicity prohibited it), and several restaurants and pubs near me allowed dogs inside as well.

In Tokyo, while dogs often weren't allowed inside restaurants, there were dog cafes that would cater to the bring-your-dog crowd.

I like the dog friendly atmosphere.

No. California, like other states run by democrats, is Paradise on Earth.

I wonder how the juices of the dog stack up against the juices of more traditional lunch meats in terms of nutritional value.

The dogs better watch their backs, though, if it's an Oriental restaurant. Or a Muslim one.

Yes. The linked article refers to what had been "the state prohibition."

So… allowing dogs in a restaurant might work as a device to repel Muslims. But then so is serving pork.

A free market in this case, as restaurants can choose to ban dogs or not and customers can make their own choice of where to go.

Interesting that no one argued that banning dogs completely would be an economic boon to restaurants due to the people that don't go because they might be exposed to dogs. I'd heard that idiotic argument before when considering bans of other things.

This may be the law here now, but its been practiced for some time. There is an Italian restaurant in Oceanside that allowed dogs in its outside patio seating 2 years ago. We didn't go back because the food wasn't that great, but there you go.

True. Interestingly enough, most of the Halal restaurants near me still served alcohol. Even the one that provided privacy screens for women who generally wore full cover. Business first!

Diseases humans get from other humans: all the diseases that people actually get.

Chef Mojo म्हणाले...

The only dogs I allowed in my restaurant were service dogs. People were welcome to sit out on the patio with their dogs, but not inside. I've asked plenty of women with handbag dogs to leave. Those were usually unpleasant scenes.

Most of those have other far more important sources. The worm diseases are from puppies which is why they must be "wormed" before they are allowed close association.

In France and Germany, dogs were inside nice restaurants all the time although that was before the big Muslim invasion and I haven't notice if that is still the case.

I think that dogs in outdoor areas of restaurants are just like children in restaurants. It fine as long as they are under control, not running around, knocking things over and can sit quietly not disturbing everyone else.

Kids and dogs....keep them under control!

gbarto म्हणाले...

As a dog owner in California, I'm glad to see this. My dog is more quiet and better behaved than a lot of the children out here. He can behave himself on the patio. Also, this is one of the areas where our legislature probably won't make things worse by acting. Many are the problems we have, but problems it's a good idea for the current legislature to try to address, not so many.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

I think it's nice that if you're out for a walk with your dog, there are some places where you can stop for a drink or something to eat, and you're with other people who chose the place where they accept dogs.

As long as there are also other places for people with other preferences, it's good.

I might pick the dogless place to eat but still enjoy walking past the place with all the dogs.

Sounds nice on paper, but in practice it will be unsanitary and just plain gross. Do you want to eat off a table that may have hosted a dog's ass not 5 minutes ago? (And yes, it may against the rules, but it will happen all the time.)

Dogs aren't children. I don't want to eat in a restaurant that allows dogs (I own two). But that's my choice, and the restaurant can make its choice.

Darleen म्हणाले...

So businesses can CHOOSE to allow dogs in outdoor eating areas, regardless of the people with asthma or allergies who may be allergic to them.

However, businesses are NOT allowed a choice when it comes to people enjoying an after-dinner cigar on the patio.

Yeah, Leftists aren't about choice, they are about enforcing what they *feel* is best for you.

Alex म्हणाले...

I'm kind of with the Muslims on this one. Dogs are inherently unclean animals. They lick their ass and other dogs' asses all the time and then want to lick YOU. Wouldn't allow such an animal anywhere near human food.

Alex म्हणाले...

tim - didn't you know that dog ass flavor is all the rage this season? Hell if our liberal overlords win, it will be dog asses all the time.

Skeptical Voter म्हणाले...

Ah shucks Ann--you've gone and ruined my plan for my next dog. My wife got to pick a purebred Basset hound as our first dog out of law school; almost 50 years on we've had a succession of mixed breed shelter rescue dogs. All good dogs, but not pure bred.

Our current rescue dog is 14 and not that far away from a trip to the big kennel in the sky.

I was thinking that, in my relative dotage, I'd finally spring for a pure bred dog--and I was thinking Corgi. But now that I know that Governor Moonbeam has a Corgi--I'll have to change breeds.

As for "against the law in California to have dogs in outside restaurant areas", that may have been the law. But if it was, it was and has been widely ignored for at least 20 years here in the Peoples Republik of California.

jimbino म्हणाले...

It seems that it would make sense for restaurants that allow dogs to be required to post a notice to that effect on the premises and in all of their ads, web pages, etc.

If I were to be ass-aulted by the presence of a dog where I had sat down to eat, I'd have to cancel the whole arrangement and leave, maybe right in the middle of a meal.

I used to do that throughout Europe back when smoking was universally permitted.

glenn म्हणाले...

So I guess all those restaurant patios where I ate with my Lab before were in violation of state law. Who knew.

Businesses like restaurants and grocery stores cannot generally exclude kids, of course.

I'd like to see someone open an "artsy" grocery store that featured nudes hanging on the walls, much like a Mexican bar, in order to create an adult atmosphere that would clearly disfavor parents' bringing along their brats to run around in the aisles.
