The Bashful Buzzard (1945) [as his siblings return to the nest carrying large, dangerous game animals, Beaky laconically flaps back with his claw wrapped around a barely visible insect] Beaky Buzzard: [singing cheerfully] I'm bringin' home a baby bumblebee!
Speaking of things that sting, I came across an interesting juxtaposition in a recent interview of Jill Abramson, the former executive editor of the New York Times.
On the one hand, regarding her firing, she said "I am still trying to sort of figure that out. I'm not altogether sure. I know publicly what has been said by the owners of the New York Times and I have to accept that on its face, I suppose.” (Source)
On the other hand, she said, "I'm trying to get why the Daily Mail is like catnip to digital audiences here...I don’t get it yet, other than I get the celebrity stuff. I’m looking at that." (Source)
I don't doubt that sexual politics were present in the denouement of her tenure with the NYT, but I can't help but think that there is a connection between her two quotes that perhaps she is missing.
The Daily Mail may be a gossipy tabloid, but it does do some actual reporting. It is a discredit to American newspapers that UK-based newspapers frequently publish far more details about incidents that take place in America, especially if the incidents involve race or religion in ways that make American editors queasy. Papers like the NYT are much more likely to skip uncomfortable parts of the story and immediately jump into editorializing (in what ostensibly is a reporting piece) about "larger" issues.
PS. Are we to believe that the NYT is NOT a gossipy tabloid? Please! It's every bit as gossipy as the Daily Mail or the New York Daily News. It's just that the NYT covers a different beat for a different audience.
I see al Zawahiri, the leader of what is left of the original al Qaeda, announces that he is opening a new front in neighboring India. Probably because he can't compete in the "Middle East" anymore, but still ....
The Chinese premier has cancelled a visit to Pakistan due to the dangers of Islamic unrest in that country.
China has got its own "unrest" in its western provinces, also bordering Afghanistan.
What happened to the Chechnya? The Tsarnaev brothers happened to wind up in Boston, but they quite possibly would have tried the same stunt if they had wound up in St. Petersburg, London, or Madrid, or some other "western" university town. Even Madison, WI.

Here's a joke from Singapore:
What is heaven?
A Japanese wife
An American salary
An English house
A Chinese cook
What is hell?
