Let's talk about Rick Perry's mugshot.
Do you think he had his own lighting people on the scene? It's got that portrait look, with one side of the face in shadow. Don't they normally shine a light right at you?
What advice do you think he was given on how to do a good mugshot? Smile. Seem confident, but not cocky. Try to look like you're posing for a normal photograph, like you're not in a mugshot.
I've seen the mugshot described as "defiant." Do you think he was advised to look "defiant"? Would you describe the expression as "defiant"? I wouldn't. People project. They think he should be defiant or is defiant, so they see defiant. But I don't think defiant is what you want in a mugshot. Randy Travis looks defiant in his DUI mugshot:
That's not what you want.

Tom Delay did the same thing. Make the mugshot a campaign poster. Then the opposition doesn't get to use it.
Randy Travis was boosting his country song creds.
It probably helps a lot to not be drunk or hungover.
Perry gave them a nice picture, but this still wins as the best political mugshot.
I have friends on Facebook talking about the inequity of Perry not having to go to jail after being arrested.
People who hate him will probably read smugness and arrogance into this shot, while people who like him will read charm and avuncularity.
What if he made no expression? Just a blank face? What would people read into it that?
Which state has dirtier Democrats? Wisconsin or Texas? So hard to choose!
Wisconsin is doing its best to learn from Chicago.
He is defying the Travis County Democrats, so he is defiant.
Completely off topic:
When a homicide occurs, is not the legally constituted authority for that purpose - coroner, ME, CSI, or whatever other such named office - the one to take charge of the body and the only one that can conduct an autopsy?
Or autopsy autopsy as Whoopi might say. Other entities might be allowed to view the exhibits and the ME's report, but surely not to further operate on the corpse?
That's a great picture. It's Perry's "Bring it" look. Pure confidence.
I agree w/rhhardin. He was intent on ruining the t-shirts.
That was taken in an office with overhead lighting, off to the side. Poorly lit, worse lighting than mugshot lighting. I think he was against an office wall.
By comparison, Tom Delay's mugshot is portrait lighting.
I'd say he looks bemused, like he was being arrested by his six year old nephew playing cops and robbers. Which is perfect.
Randy looks like a man, not a preening, smug metrosexual like Vicodin boy
"I've seen the mugshot described as 'defiant.'"
"Resolute," more like.
Which state has dirtier Republicans? Wisconsin or Texas? So hard to choose!
FTFY
I don't think it's Perry's best ever smile. I wish he would have looked like he'd just been laughing.
Did you see VodkaPundit's tweet on the topic? "I asked my bartender to make me a Rosemary Lehmberg, and she poured me a mug of warm vodka with my car keys in the bottom."
One of his commenters said "It needs to have your business card taped to the bottom, so that people know just who the f#ck you are, dammit!"
"Which state has dirtier Republicans? Wisconsin or Texas? So hard to choose!
FTFY
"
Really? You wasted digital ink on that? Not even an ounce of creativity. So sad.
Randy looks drunk. Go home, Randy. You're drunk.
That mugshot is lame. James Brown, now that's a mugshot.
You want to see defiance? Snooki defies you.
Steve McQueen cracks me up.
It's not such a great photo. The NY Daily News labeled it a "smug shot". But, for a first try, it was not such a bad shot. Lindsay Lohan has lots of experience in this line of modeling and has, in addition, a background in acting. It is unfair to compare a pro like her with an amateur like Perry.
Okay, Paris Hilton is beyond cool. And here I thought she had no talent for anything. She is Queen of the Mugshots.
Yeah, DeLay's was better; Perry's kind of looks like a mugshot.
Thanks St. Croix. Steve McQuuen's was the best of the bunch.
Another vote for "resolute."
It's funny how some celebrities totally give up. I am an old man, a cranky old man. I am homeless crack addict or crazy uncle perv.

No, you hallucinated again. Where are those secret routers ? In your head.
I'd say more like the cat that ate the canary.
The politics of destruction has been around forever. It seems to be effective for the faction in ascendancy. But when the country is in a tailspin it smacks of desperation.
Make the mugshot a campaign poster.
"This is what Fascist Democrats do to you when you disagree with them."
I think that would be pretty effective.
He should have worn a t-shirt with a picture of the drunk D.A.
"This is what Fascist Democrats do to you when you disagree with them."
I'll ask again: who are these Democrats prosecuting Rick Perry?
Is "hungover" now "hangedover"?
The before shot to compare to the after shot of his 99 years release date at age 149.
In 99 years Lehmberger will probably look worse, having consumed another 17,000 fifths of vodka
At least Perry doesn't have to be named John Doe in Texas.
I assumed he'd go for the Tom Delay, big happy smile like he's on vacation.
I don't like the lighting and am surprised mug shot requirements allow for that kind of half-face obscuring.
That's called "Rembrandt lighting" ... for me, I think the left side of his face could use just a little bit more light. But, all in all, a very good celebrity mugshot!
And, BTW, how come the background to Perry's mug shot doesn't have the "height stripes?"
McCrum is a Democrat.
McCrum donated solely to Democrats.
McCrum was an (attempted) Obama appointee.
McCrum was described by friends as a Democrat.
McCrum is a Democrat.
Rick PAC has a great ad via Insty. She was out of control. They should buy media time during all evening news and run it.

LOL. Sure thing "birkel". You really are a silly little liar.
Very Sphinxlike! One's interpetation of this portrait will say a lot more about the viewer than the subject. Perry is now a window into our own souls.
I read it as "I can't believe I have to deal with these bullsh*t charges".
Hohho was the grand jury rigged? Drudge has a headline about a grand jury member who's an active dem party delegate.
I may be totally wrong, but I don't think you have to "rig" a grand jury, just present one side of the picture as seen by the prosecution who wants to prosecute (or maybe just make headlines).
But peopke can be swayed, did this person say anything behind closed doors?
Perry Grand Juror Was An Active Democratic Party Delegate During Jury Proceedings
The drunken democrat spent 45 days in jail. She spit on her arresting officers.
Yeah - she doesn't need to resign. She's a precious and holy democrat! All democrats are above reproach and above the law. They also deserve endless tax payer money, all of it. Get down on your knees and worship your neo fascist regressive betters.
You really are a silly little liar.
Pot meet kettle
garage mahal: I've often wondered, do you see yourself as a disinterested observer, calling balls and strikes as you see them, without fear or favor?
And the only reason everything seems to be the Republicans' fault is that everything really is the Republicans' fault?
Just wondering.
I read part of a screed that must have been written by a lawyer for the Travis County DA office.
It really was a masterpiece. All about how Perry's use of the veto was blackmail, extortion, and God knows what, and threatening to use his veto was solicitation to corruption, or something, I think.
The bottom line is that an executive veto allowed by the state constitution is an executive veto and the governor is not required to justify it, least of all to those whose actions he has been given the veto to frustrate when needed in his judgment.
And Rosemary Lehmberg is a disgrace to herself, Travis County, and the State of Texas, who should be encouraged to resign her office by any available means.
Perry's picture looks good because the police know which side their bread is buttered on and who does the buttering.
And garage, it was right the first time. But you knew that.
garage, like with Walker, wants to pretend that this Perry deal isn't being driven by Democrats.
Yesterday he was going to the mat defending the action. But as liberals back away from this indictment like it has the herp, garage, having reviewed the liberal talking points, is now "what Democrats?".
No intellectual honesty. No boundries. Zilch.
I would say the defining characteristic of that mugshot is what's not there. There's not a trace of guilt or shame. That's what he was going for.
Not defiant, more toward amused.
garage, like with Walker, wants to pretend that this Perry deal isn't being driven by Democrats.
I've asked several times for the names of these Democrats prosecuting Perry. "birkel" is the only commenter who attempted. What do you have?
Steve R:
That you would call me a liar by inference is unfair.
I think you'll find no evidence of that.
Ha, Ha, Ha! Nice pic - now let's dare Ann to place the drunk DA's mug shot next to Perry's? No let Perry use both pics for his campaign!
I think he should use that picture in every campaign poster his campaign prints.
"Perry Grand Juror Was An Active Democratic Party Delegate During Jury Proceedings". That's interesting, you lawyers posting on here - I thought the Grand Jury met in secret and the jurors cannot talk about this. I believe Texas has a law about talking to the media by a grand juror - throw this liberal hack in jail!
No lighting people. His sheer strength of manly character just been the light.
Unlike pictures of Christie, which seem to just bend the gravity well...
I wish the headline writers would stop calling Perry "defiant". To me, that word suggests the cocky kid who says, "You ain't the boss of me", or "You can't prove I broke your window."
Nick Nolte. THERE was a mug shot...

Well, lets see. It started as a complaint from Texans for Public Justice, a liberal group funded in part by George Soros. Ever hear of him?
The
Texans for Public Justice can't prosecute anybody.
When a homicide occurs, is not the legally constituted authority for that purpose - coroner, ME, CSI, or whatever other such named office - the one to take charge of the body and the only one that can conduct an autopsy?
No, but they get first crack at the body. Once they've examined it, it is usually released to the family.
He looks like Sheriff Walt Longmire.
I am surprised anyone responds to the Mahalfellatroll. Waste of keystrokes.
The Mahalfellatroll stills thinks the "phony" IRS scandal is a "couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati".
So, one of the grand jury members is a Democratic Party delegate - while the grand jury was in session!

Anyone surprised?
Apparently the special prosecutor, Michael McCrum, the guy behind this pretty much universally reviled indictment, won't say whether he's a Democrat or Republican.
But it's interesting that he earlier this year got out of a contempt charge (judge ruled the DA had missed a deadline) that was brought by the Bexar County DA's office, which is headed up by a Republican. (The charge said he’d instructed a subpoenaed witness to “get lost for awhile” to avoid testifying in his client's intoxication manslaughter trial.)
Also that one of his high-profile clients included lawyer Mikal Watts, "Democratic Party stalwart who has hosted President Barack Obama at his home.”
why should be garage be dis-interested observer? He's an activist for holy cause of socialism.
"The Travis County district attorney is not prosecuting Perry. The state district judge in the case is a Republican appointed by George W. Bush when he was governor. The judge selected San Antonio lawyer Mike McCrum as the special prosecutor in the case. McCrum served as a federal prosecutor in the administration of President George H.W. Bush and was supported by Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison as a potential U.S. attorney candidate."
Not "defiant." Rather, I would say "smug." Smug in the assumption that he his above the law.
Either that, or he had washed down a fistful of prescription painkillers with a few tumblers of scotch.
Keep smiling.
Liberal democrats must be destroyed!
@bbkingfish: I hope you never have to face being charged with felonies as nasty as these because you got on the wrong side of some prosecutor. I'm sure you won't look "smug".
McCrum served as a federal prosecutor in the administration of President George H.W. Bush and was supported by Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison as a potential U.S. attorney candidate."
...and donates exclusively to Democrats.
Who you give money to > who you work for.
Smug in the assumption that he his above the law.
Can you cite the law he is "above"?
Here's hoping no prosecutor ever charged you for no reason whatsoever.
bbkingfish: "Smug in the assumption that he his above the law."
LOL
That would be the "law" that the left is making up on the fly.
That you would call me a liar by inference is unfair.
I think you'll find no evidence of that.
My apologies for throwing you into the mix, merely wanted to point out the irony of garage calling anyone a liar.
Lies = debunking your bullshit
I'd say he looks a little defiant - not cocky, but not ready to roll over either.

"If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor, period."
Period.
If it's one thing garage hates, it lies baby!
"McCrum served as a federal prosecutor in the administration of President George H.W. Bush and was supported by Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison as a potential U.S. attorney candidate."
This says absolutely nothing about McCrum. It says a lot about the Republicans who are willing to hire a Democrat though.
To think this says something about McCrum says a lot about you. It says you'd never hire a Republican unless they converted to Democrat. It says you're so partisan, you can't see beyond that lense.
I'd be smiling too. This is another "let's indict someone for something that isn't illegal" indictments like Delay's.
Hell, outside Travis county I doubt you could get even a ham sandwich on this one.
Should a Republican President have his AG investigate Travis County for persistent violations of the civil rights of conservative Americans?
Does a pattern of very partisan abuses of power indicate that federal oversight of their DA office might be needed?
