I wasn't even going to talk about the tampons...

... but if Glenn is going to bring that up and the old uproar about being a feminist standing proudly in front of the old sexual-harassment-in-the-workplace ex-President, I'm going to have to link.

At some point feminism became less about rights and freedoms for women and more about getting someone else to pay for free stuff.

And this ties in exactly to the discussion and garment-rending over young women today not wanting to identify as "feminist". When the movement is no longer about women having equal rights and is more about making others pay for your stuff, it's perfectly understandable that this turns off women who actually think of themselves as independent and strong. Who wants to join a constant victimhood gang?

Though I wouldn't put much stock in what Valenti has to say. It'd be like reading Storm Front for a good idea of how the American Right is thinking.

The Crack Emcee म्हणाले...

I have to admit, while I can't go along with paying for birth control, free tampons would get my vote.

I'm glad "THE WIMMENZ" get to see how narrow-minded Instapundit is - it's not just us "race hustlers":

Of course, if "The War On Women" offends Glenn, that means he *responsibly* tells his readers "EVERYTHING" (I like how his mind-on-fire went there) that could benefit women is to be opposed. I think he gets away with this by insisting his wife is part cyborg, so he doesn't have to treat others like her as human beings, or something.

He's white culture's "space hustler"...

Brando,

"I wouldn't put much stock in what Valenti has to say. It'd be like reading Storm Front for a good idea of how the American Right is thinking."

I don't do that, but, except that the the American Right speaks in euphemisms - and especially when it comes to the results of their efforts - I still can't tell the difference.

That the American Right THINKS there is, may be the problem,...

I agree that it's seldom helpful to focus on what's going on in the heads of the stupidest and most ridiculous representatives of a movement. But it's interesting to try to imagine how this could even get in her head.

I mean, with all the things that even a naive, pudding-headed liberal could believe are necessities and should therefore be free -- food, shelter, maybe health care -- some feminists manage to gravitate toward birth control pills and tampons.

I can only imagine it's because if you advocate for food, men could get some. But men have no possible use for tampons, so let's make THAT free instead, and since money is fungible, it's a direct man-to-woman subsidy. What else could explain why she's worked up about tampons for the masses and not food, when there are hungry people in the world? Can it be anything else other than straight-up aching to take advantage of men? Seriously, can it?

fivewheels म्हणाले...

And "free" should be in irony quotes above, natch.

Tampons are not green. They are depleting our landfills. Still, I'd be willing to subsidize your menstrual cup because menstruating women — weakened as they are from blood loss — deserve to be in a subsidized protected class and because cups are eco!

Tampons are a difficult subject to introduce in a blog. They're important, but they interrupt the flow.

Fen म्हणाले...

So lets go over the list

1) not accountable for your reproductive choices

2) need Uncle SugarDaddy to pay for your birth control

3) and now your tampons

You've come a long way, baby!

The older I get, the more I understand why women were so easily oppressed for so many thousands of years.

In addition, the melanin-deprived should have government-provided sunblock. The whiter you are, the more you get. And extra for redheads. Skin cancer avoidance is important.

In addition, all males should have a government-provided stipend for food; they require more calories than females due to the ravages of testosterone upon the body (forcing it to produce extraneous, calorie-hungry muscle mass.)

Gahrie म्हणाले...

Yet more evidence that women see both the government and men as nothing more than a wallet.

Brando म्हणाले...

A better question for the Valentis of the world is "what shouldn't be free?" Should everyone be entitled to free food and drink, and shelter and transportation? Free clothing? Free health care? Free entertainment? Arguments can be made for why each of these things is necessary at some level. Should these things be means tested?

Then you have to answer where should the means testing draw the line? Someone is going to be deprived of free stuff by virtue of their income--so in a way it's unfair to means test. And of course why draw the line at subsistence food and drink? Who are we to tell the recipients of free stuff that they can't have better food and drink, or indulge themselves with free sweets and alchohol?

Before you know it everyone gets everything all the time, and we can just tax old Mr. Sucker as much as it'll take to make sure freebies flow freely.

I have to say I admire Ms. Valenti's tactics--troll the world with a stupid suggestion right out of the annals of Entitlement World, then round up all negative responses and pretend that's the patriarchy trying to shut down a feminist from expressing her ideas. This must be getting her extra applause at her next drum circle.

But hey, the fact that a majority of young women don't want to identify as "feminist"--that must be because they're stupid and easily led by misogynist pressure, right? Couldn't be a reaction to this sort of dumbassery.

Brando म्हणाले...

"Yet more evidence that women see both the government and men as nothing more than a wallet."

I won't insult women by assuming Valenti speaks for anyone outside of her extremist sect.

Brando म्हणाले...

"In addition, all males should have a government-provided stipend for food; they require more calories than females due to the ravages of testosterone upon the body (forcing it to produce extraneous, calorie-hungry muscle mass.)"

Considering men have far greater incarceration rates, worse health outcomes, shorter lifespans and greater incidence of violent death, one would think the left would consider this a crisis in need of correction. Men apparently are too busy squandering their male privilege in prisons, or working long hours at dangerous jobs, or suffering heart attacks.

If you make enough stuff free, I'm gonna quit working. Along with the folks who produce all the "free" stuff.

Then I guess we'll all be back to do-it-yourself, with appropriate division of labor. Some of us will learn to hoe corn, while others weave tampons.

Peter म्हणाले...

The first argument seems to be, "It costs too much so it should be free." Which somehow ignores the cost of "free" in this context.

The second is, "It's medically necessary and health care is free so I shouldn't have to pay for it."

Which is at least reasonable. After all, I require costly amusements for my mental health and I, too, think someone else should pay for them.

Why can't everything just be free? "I had visited a world incomparably more affluent than this, in which money was unknown and without conceivable use." -- "Looking Backward: 2000-1887" by Edward Bellamy

At which point some people will be better at weaving tampons than others, and the low-productivity tampon-weavers will vote for whichever government will seize surplus tampons from high-productivity weavers for distribution.

Why isn't toilet paper free? Everyone needs it and failure to use it can have unpleasant health effects. Or is Valenti only interested in things that benefit her own gender, rather than both genders? What did some man do to her to turn her into such a misandrist?

A woman here: Valenti and her defenders go from "it's a basic need that poor women have difficulty managing" and reasonable observations about the need for sanitary products in the Third World (and, yes, providing pads keeps teen girls in school), to a "fairness" issue.

With her "poor women" angle, this is similar to other issues of what is and isn't covered by food stamps: toiletries of any kind are not covered, and diapers aren't either, even though these count as "basic needs" and poor parents have substantial difficulty managing diapers, with some food banks providing these but most not.

But she's really lost it with her idea that tampons should be free for everyone because fairness. Does she really support bean-counting over what kinds of everyday expenses are different for men and women and expecting the State to make up the difference?

Every other race (including WHITES) have been used as slaves, have been shunned and ostracized by societies, including here in the US.

When is your race going to quick lying on the ground crying "It ain't our faults. We's be so oppressed", get off your collective asses, and develop the sense of community and self-reliance that have allowed all other races and oppressed people to rise above their circumstances?

It has been WAY too long to blame anyone other than yourselves, and frankly the Civil Rights movement and leadership that morphed into the worst enemy of the Black community, for the continued and increasing failures of such a large percentage Blacks.

Jane the Actuary म्हणाले...

"oh, and just for fun: How's about we stop all the nickel-and-diming and just give women a bigger exemption on their taxes?"

There are some good arguments for giving the poor their money in lump sums to be spent however they choose (rather than requiring some for food, some for rent, etc.) as it'd be much cheaper to administer and it'd let them make their own priorities. And if they make "bad" choices--spending it all on lotto tickets, say--then that's on them.

Notice the anger - why? Why do blacks arouse such ferocious anger in the people who've historically tormented us? We were slaves. We didn't start this - whites did - be pissed at them, dead and alive.

And I like how you think - if whites didn't fight for their rights - blacks shouldn't fight for theirs. It's just insanity on parade.

And, of course, you left out the government's role in all this - why? You're so government-out-of-our-lives until it's blacks, right? Then the government can do whatever it pleases - like giving blacks syphilis - and you're like "Get over it!" right-right?

Crack, you're an idiot. Blacks enslaved other blacks in Africa. Blacks captured blacks and sold them into slavery. Egyptians enslaved blacks. Arabs enslaved blacks and sold them into slavery to other Arabs, to Turks, to anyone who wanted slaves.

President-Mom-Jeans म्हणाले...

I think its an eternal struggle with Althouse. On the one hand, her free shit for womyns feminist side must be frustrated with Crack's constant hijacking of her posts with his hate whitey/e-begging comments, but this is always at war with her white guilt side.

For Althouse, I guess race trumps gender.

AustinRoth म्हणाले...

Wholelatta - it is beyond just that. Why do Blacks insist the only slavery that ever happened was to them? That is utter BS.

As I said, all races have been enslaved at one point or another in their history buy other races, including their own.

They managed to overcome it. Why? Because one free, they didn't expect their oppressors to be their salvation. They looked to each other to help the entire community rise together.

Today, all a large percentage of Blacks can do is wallow in self-pity. Of course, many do not, and have lifted themselves and their families up.

Are things perfect for Blacks in the US? Hell no. The incarceration rate of young Black men is a national disgrace. They absolutely face discrimination in many facets of their lives.

But so do Jews, Latinos, Orientals, Indians. They however have certainly done a significantly better job improving their lots in life than Blacks over the past 50 years.

So this Valenti woman figures woman are entitled to some one else picking up the tab for their needs (males). Crack believes he is entitled to reparations from white people. Perhaps he should send Valenti-a white woman an invoice for her share of reparations due him less a credit for what he owes her. Now if Crack were a black woman then she could claim reparations plus an additional entitlement subsidy for woman's only things like tampons, Midol and birth control pills and abortions and or choosing to be single mothers from the start and all the subsidies needed for that.
