Throwing out the white boys. Racism is alive and well there.
But weren't those "white boys" elected in the first place? Is every defeat of a white boy by a non-white boy a case of racism? And is President Obama currently a victim of blatant racism despite having been elected to the White House twice?
My very narrow understanding of Hawaii politics is that it is pretty incompetent. Ali Wai yacht harbor in Honolulu is a beautiful spot and the potential source of considerable revenue for the city and state yet it has deteriorated and many of the boats there are in poor shape and, I understand, there are preferences based on political influence. A guy fell into the harbor a few years ago after coming out of a bar drunk. He died of overwhelming infections from the water,.
There have been repeated attempts to declare Hawaiians as "Native Americans" (ie an Indian tribe), declare the Islands as their reservation and use blood percentage to assign tribal and political rights.
They are trying to get rid of the Whites and Asians.
Whitey came and got the local population drunk on welfare handouts. That's why the water in the yacht harbor is filled with seepage and nasty. Union labor won't touch the clean-up and it takes decades and billions to complete road or any new infrastructure project.
They will never get rid of the whites and Asians. There are just too many of them. The people who identify as natives are outnumbered by more than 10:1 And fwiw, the proportion of whites in Hawaii is increasing rapidly, as is the proportion of Filipinos (granted that mixed-race/ethnicity is becoming the norm there). There is considerable inter-ethnic rivalry between the Japanese and Filipinos too.

They don't have to if they succeed in making them second class citizens. besides the smarter ones realize they need the Whites and asians to keep the power on and things working.
You can't make 90% of the population, mostly including the richer and more powerful people, "second class citizens". People just don't work that way. The proposed rules on native Hawaiians are a rather pathetic form of rent seeking on their part, and a rather pathetic sort of guilt response on white peoples part. Native Hawaiians are a declining group that will eventually be completely absorbed, and this giveaway is just a consolation prize.
Hawaii will have a hard time trying to determine how to assign a "percentage". Throw in all the other Pacific Islanders to go all with Asians, Anglos, etc. going back to Capt. Cook and its a fertile ground for all sorts of intellectual and political nonsense and corruption.
And Obama endorsed the loser in t his case of Democrat friendly fire.
How much help will Obama's endorsement be in a contested Senate race this November. The word from the "front" to Obama is "send your money, but stay the heck out of my state".
Abercrombie, a sitting governor, lost to a surprising challenger for a number of reasons. The first is that Abercrombie did a "Scott Walker" on the powerful teachers union at the beginning of his term in office by imposing a labor contract on them they didn't like. Because the state's finances were in dire shape, Abercrombie had no choice, and he did what had to be done (something his Republican predecessor would never have been allowed to do). The unions have paid him back for that, but he won't complain publicly because he believes in party loyalty.
Second, he angered religious voters who are opposed to same sex marriage. He actively supported and signed legislation that legalized civiil unions and, later on, legislation that legalized same sex marriage.
Third, because Hawaii has open primaries, there may have been many cross-over Republican votes, as the outcome of each of the Republican contests was never in doubt. In particular, Republican seniors might have taken the opportunity to show their displeasure for Abercrombie because he, unlike his opponent David Ige, had supported efforts to tax the pensions of retirees. Under HawaII law, pensions are exempt from state income tax. This was a serious mistake by Abercrombie and he was eventually forced to issue a humbling campaign promise that he would oppose any further efforts to tax the pensions of retirees

Throwing out the white boys. Racism is alive and well there. abetted by the Dems who are trying to give the same racist treatment to HANC's
Shuffling the deck chairs on the good ship lollipop - ah, I mean, one-party welfare state Titanic.

Wow, this is like watching a Coming Attractions reel in the movies for the November elections.
The Democrats still win in November. It's just a question of which Democrats.

He's got the "merde" touch, that's for sure.
Only question is.. will Hawaii become the nest Detroit or will California beat them to the goal line?
Changing Democrats won't make any difference.
