I assumed the words were Jeremiah Wright's.

If Douglass had succeeded in promoting John C. Fremont over Lincoln for the presidency, history might have taken an alternate turn, Fremont's anti-slavery rhetoric and actions notwithstanding. Lincoln, I believe, was the man of God's choosing to lead.

Sins against God are handled quite well by God Himself.

Do you know why your son posted this excerpt, AA?

Thank goodness for Abraham Lincoln and his political party. Without them Frederick Douglas' words might still be true today. Heck, another political party tried to block legislation to right America's wrongs 90 years after losing a Civil War.

If only the names of those political parties had not been lost to history we might discern some common thread.

sane_voter,

"I wonder what Frederick Douglass would say about present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans . . . ad nauseam"

Because what present day blacks say doesn't count? If he said whites destroyed all his good work - and goodwill - what would you say in return?

Whites are so determined to blame blacks for SOMETHING - while skirting blame for white's almost 3 centuries of awfulness - they'll say anything.

Even to Frederick Douglass.

He'd see through you, too,...

Big Mike said...

In 1852 that statement was only mildly hyperbolic. Is there a reason why your son chooses to ignore 162 years of history, Althouse? Because a reasonable person might note that more than twice as many years have elapsed between when Douglass wrote that diatribe and today, than between the founding of the Republic and the day he wrote it (the phrase "four score and seven years ago" would be spoken 11 years later).

Once he discovered most whites didn't stop discriminating until I was approaching my teen years, I think, he'd be just as disgusted, as any other black American.

Whites think they'd get a medal or something.

Michael K,

Then - a mere 12 years later - America abandoned what all that fighting was for, reneged on it's reparations promises, and embarked on another 100 years of terrorism.

Is that the glorious history to which you refer?

I love it - no thanks to blacks for winning their own freedom and making the Constitution mean something. Hell, Speilberg even left Douglass out of the movie "LIncoln," that's how accurate the white view of what's "been lost to history" is. Face it, Berkil:

AIn't nothing "lost to history" - you don't like history because it doesn't reflect well on whites - so you claim we're all confused. But blacks aren't confused.

We know the party's history, and the Republicans blew it, and they'll continue to be racist to anyone who reminds them of that fact.

Because Jim Crow lasted for the rest of that time - pretty much up until I was a teen - and the conditions of black America's lives aren't that different.

White resistance is still a MAJOR factor in black lives.

What would good old Fred say about a black president if we could go back in time. I'd imagine it would be the similar to what happened when Marty Mcfly went back tto in time to the 50’s and Doc Borian asked him who the president was and he said Ronald Reagan.

Still, let's put it into historical context. At the time, I'd imagine Fred had a point considering the times.
But as D'sluza points out. The greatness of this country is thst we have it within ourselves to correct injustice because of our inherent rights. MLK didn't have to ask for a new right to allow for blacks to be incorporated into society, he merely had to point out our own inherent values, which rightly who'd allow for desegregation.

The problem with the left is that they never forget the Fred Douglas narrative and conveniently ignore all the ways we've moved past it. Its as if history never occurred. You can hear it in all of cracks's rants.

Stop whining about what they actively do to themselves. Perhaps they should look at their hatemongering leaders , Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakhan, Wright, Jackson-Lee, and their ilk and ask why those people work in ways to punish blacks. They should ask themselves why they still support those leaders whom profit and personally benefit from actively keeping black people interminably in crushing poverty. Perhaps instead of expecting everyone else to help them from their self inflicted dystopia and blaming everyone except those who deserve blame, i.e. themselves, they should look in the mirror and tell themselves, admit, that they fucked up. That they are responsible for their position and condition. But, neither they nor you are capable of that level of honesty or introspection.
" present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans " are the result of decades of liberal policies ,and black leaders collusion, to create exactly what those cities, their communities, and their populations are today. They are the direct result of what you, the black community, have chosen to be. For that and more you have no one to blame but the face you see in the mirror every single morning.

You really don't understand the concept, of white America's generational plunder of blacks, do you? Listen to yourself, talking about "the past sucked". Does this look like success to you? It's where I live now. Here's part of what you miss:

"As time went on, I built up a tremendous respect, in a way, for the kids in the gangs because with hardly any guidance and no positive role models, they were raising themselves to be self-sufficient in any way they could be. ,...It seemed as though many gang members just slipped into the depths of this dark criminal society because they were extremely angry and depressed about their struggles, and to realize that was a heavy understanding to cope with.

…They held no respect for the elders, or anybody around them, and concurrently held an angry self-entitlement to making a living for themselves and their family by any means necessary. Spending time in the community helped me understand their situation in a much deeper sense."

Genuflecting before the Mau-Mauing black demagogue appears to be the Althouse family tradition. Sort of like a Tom Wolfe novel.

Of course, the difference here is that Althouse is extremely clever about getting herself and her kiddies in on the goodies of the oppression religion. First, it was feminism, which got her on the gravy train, then it was gaydom, which got her son on the gravy train.

You've got to admire that scam. If I had any sense, I would have declared myself a flaming fag decades ago and raked in the loot. The oppression sweepstakes is where the money and influence resides, and Althouse is a pro.

Althouse is all about playing and winning the game of office politics. I never wanted to be in a fucking office, so my goal in life was just to tolerate the bullshit and go home. So, prof, you can have it. I don't want it.

Douglass goes on later in that speech:

But a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have become unfashionable. The arm of commerce has borne away the gates of the strong city. Intelligence is penetrating the darkest corners of the globe. It makes its pathway over and under the sea, as well as on the earth. Wind, steam, and lightning are its chartered agents. Oceans no longer divide, but link nations together. From Boston to London is now a holiday excursion. Space is comparatively annihilated. Thoughts expressed on one side of the Atlantic are distinctly heard on the other. .

Sound familiar?

Douglass was a great man, both a man of action and a powerful thinker on race and subjects that transcended race.

Who knew Althouse was an out an out racist? My uncle used that expression regularly back in the 60s when I was a small child, and the "dark thing" in the woodpile was referred to by a word that has worn out its welcome in polite society. I guess he didn't really use the Shakespearean reference "Something's rotten in Denmark" which was the common expression the rest of us used to express the same thought.

He also lived in a trailer which we kids thought was cool because it was like "camping" all the time.

Ultimately what happens in life is based on the work put in. Govt can make public schools, but if you don't attend class or study you're not going to do well. Similarly, govt can pass laws that say businesses can't discriminate but if you are not skilled or don't put in the effort, or never finished high school i'ts going to dictate your life's trajectory.
So, unless you want govt taking tests for you, you have to do it yourself.

I go back to James Brown.
"I don't want nobody to give me nothing. Open up the door, I'll get it myself"
I was never sure if he was saying he would open the door and get it himself or society should just open the door and then he would get it himself.
Regardless, society DID open the door. And he got for himself and did quite well.
Self reliance goes along way, and if you have any plans on being middle class or better and are not, that's the ONLY way you will succeed. You're going to have to get a job. You're going to have to do well in school. It wont' be handed to you.

I wish more blacks hadn't abandoned James Browns idea of self empowerment and instead embraced the gimme culture of the left that infantilizes them. "Oh, the poor blacks they need the help of the beneficent whites because they are incapable of doing for themselves."
Bull crap. Get off your butt, stop whining, and do for yourself. Youre capable.
And that means you Crack.

And if you don't, no one else is going to do it for you.

And here you can read Douglass' speech AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. Here he sings the wonders of America. Here's just a portion of it: "Color is no longer a crime or a badge of bondage. At last the out-spread wings of the American Eagle afford shelter and protection to men of all colors, all countries and climes, and the long oppressed black man may honorably fall or gloriously flourish under the star-spangled banner. [Applause.] I stand here tonight not only as a colored man and an American, but by the express decision of the Attorney-General of the United States, as a colored citizen, having, in common with all other citizens, a stake in the safety, prosperity, honor, and glory of a common country [Cheering.] We are all liberated by this proclamation. Everybody is liberated. The white man is liberated, the black man is liberated, the brave men now fighting the battles of their country against rebels and traitors are now liberated, and may strike with all their might, even if they do hurt the Rebels, at their most sensitive point. [Applause.] I congratulate you upon this amazing change—the amazing approximation toward the sacred truth of human liberty. All the space between man’s mind and God’s mind, says Parker, is crowded with truths that wait to be discovered and organized into law for the better government of society. Mr. Lincoln has not exactly discovered a new truth, but he has dared, in this dark hour of national peril, to apply an old truth, long ago acknowledged in theory by the nation—a truth which carried the American people safely through the war for independence, and one which will carry us, as I believe, safely through the present terrible and sanguinary conflict for national life, if we shall but faithfully live up to that great truth."

Will Richardson said...

“[I]n regard to the colored people, there is always more that is benevolent, I perceive, than just, manifested towards us. What I ask for the negro is not benevolence, not pity, not sympathy, but simply justice. The American people have always been anxious to know what they shall do with us . . . I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are worm-eaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! . . . And if the negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone! . . . [Y]our interference is doing him positive injury.”
— Frederick Douglass, What the Black Man Wants: An Address Delivered in Boston, Massachusetts, on 26 January 1865, reprinted in 4 The Frederick Douglass Papers 59, 68 (J. Blassingame & J. McKivigan eds. 1991) (emphasis in original).

I scarcely need say, fellow-citizens, that my opinion of those measures fully accords with that of your fathers. Such a declaration of agreement on my part would not be worth much to anybody. It would certainly prove nothing as to what part I might have taken had I lived during the great controversy of 1776. To say now that America was right, and England wrong, is exceedingly easy. Everybody can say it; the dastard, not less than the noble brave, can flippantly discant on the tyranny of England towards the American Colonies....The cause of liberty may be stabbed by the men who glory in the deeds of your fathers.

They were great men, too-great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory.

Big Mike,

"Who put them [at the bottom] and who keeps them there if not Blacks themselves and their allies in the Democrat party?"

White plunder and white supremacy stole our wealth, Mike - nobody but you cares what party you're from when doing it. Democrats before, Republicans later - white supremacy is both of your problems.

"What you call my "racism" is my ongoing anger and frustration that you and others of your race absolutely refuse to grow up, be a man, and accept responsibility for your own actions."

When America sets an example, we'll be happy to follow it - get blacks the money back that was stolen with the blessing of the government you support. If not, you and those like you have no ethical or moral standing blacks are in any way predisposed or obligated to respect in return.

That's called "Playing Fair" - I heard white Americans were supposedly into that. Something about baseball, I think.

"Back in the early 1960s, when I demonstrated for civil rights, I was so offended that the Jim Crow type of white kept referring to grown Black men as "boy." But now that I am in my 60s I realize that you and way too many other Black people really do think like children."

Because, now that you don't march any more, you imagine the problem's over - like those of us who are no position to stop should be helping YOU out. Want me to come over and wipe your troubled brow?

That would've been a likely job, for me, not too long ago. As Bill Clinton said, the president would've been getting him coffee - not Thomas Jefferson but William Jefferson - showing how far we've REALLY come. So far that you've stopped marching.

Which means you think, in less than a single generation, you've solved all the problems I face in this land with a 400 year history, and practice, of discriminating against me and mine. That'll never the problem, in your view, as you whip out that old racist canard about blacks having a child-like nature and mental capacity, is that it?

"Now grow up, asshole."

Man, for an old civil rights guy, progress sure looks a LOT different from the other end of your telescope,...

The Democrats have lost their fight to continue chattel slavery, but their war against the Constitution continues; and to attack it, they steal the words of one of their enemies, and use his denunciation of slavery to suggest that patriotism itself is "a sham...an unholy license...swelling vanity".

In agreement with black republican Rep. Joseph Hayne Rainey who said the following (1872):

'You gentlemen on the Democratic side of the House have voted against all the ...amendments of the Constitution and the civil rights laws enforcing the same. Why did you do it? I answer, because those measures had a tendency to give to the poor Negro his just rights...and give him freedom of speech, freedom of action, and the opportunity of education, that he might elevate himself to the dignity of manhood. Now you come to us and say that you are our best friends. We would that we could look upon you as such. We would that your votes as recorded...from day to day could only demonstrate it. But your votes, your actions, and the constant cultivation of your cherished prejudices prove to the Negroes of the entire country that the Democrats are in opposition to them: and if the Democrats could have sway [have their way], our race would have no foothold here...The Democratic Party many woo us, they may court us and try to get us to worship at their shrine, but I will tell the gentleman that we are Republicans by instinct, and we will be Republicans as long as God will allow our proper sense to hold sway over us.'

White men are becoming house-servants, cooks and stewards on vessels - at hotels. Of human bondage makes a good theme. IMO that is always the issue. Who runs today's crews of slaves/serfs/cheap laborers/ illegal" Hispanic fugitives from deportation?

The answer is the wealthy that play by insider connections and political favors.

The Roman Empire was 90% slaves.

The British Monarchy took up Rome's old ways overseas. The Scots-Irish had to stop them using their weapons and guts when King George announced that as his plan for us.

The Union guys stopped that in the Secessionist States for 4 bloody years, and after Atlanta surrendered to Sherman they reelected Lincoln.

Labor unions stopped that in the industrial age.

After WWII Truman integrated the Military and Martin Luther's name sake, MLK Jr, took up freedom and won the segregationist battle only 50 years ago.

The issue is not yesterday's slaves reparations. It's today's slaves being released from government dependence, which depends in turn on:

1) Cheap electrical energy that supports food growing and distribution, and

2)a strong dollar, and

3) a strong military force, and

4) the oldie but goody freedoms of speech, and of the practice of our religion, and of bearing arms

So Crack and all Americans need to be standing up to the Marxist Destroyers of all 4 listed above, including the one we now call President.

So, yesterday, it was practically mandatory to feel collective pride in a single historical event but, point out the government has acted against blacks for 400 years - which anyone can see the results of - and, all of a sudden, good ol' Birkel and other whites are individuals, again, collectively free to exempt themselves from all national responsibility.

Whites grant themselves, alone, the freedom to ignore what emotions America's negative actions throughout history conjure. Collective amnesia in a sea of resulting suffering.

Ta-Nehisi Coates called it "Patriotism a la Carte'". Birkel wasn't around during WWI, but you don't hear him bitching about paying the soldier's pensions. Or, if he's not old enough for WWII, Japanese reparations for internment - I've heard no complaint.

But let the government have acted against blacks for 400 years - which anyone can see the results of - and, all of a sudden, good ol' patriot Birkel and other whites are transformed into individuals, free to exempt themselves from all national responsibility and ready to take up arms to do it.

Wow - That's a fine example of white entitlement (You think WHITES should be able to feel that way), based on white privilege (You think whites SHOULD be able to feel that way) because of white supremacy (Who's going to stop whites from feeling any damn way they want?) resulting in white racist actions.

Firstly, the Douglas's quotation is hyperbole at its' finest - considering that 90% of the slaves sent to the Caribbean or South American died from overwork or disease compared to an increasing population of slaves in the USA from births (not importation). The American slave importation was only around 5-6 % of the total number of slaves brought into the Americas.

The seconds point is the contention that the Civil War was fought over freeing the slaves. If it had been advertise as that, there would have been precious little support for going to war. It's telling that in the period before the Civil War that the abolitionists never tried the simple measure of just buying slaves and setting them free. There had been no importation of slaves since the early 1800s - so the trade was strictly in people residing in the US. But the reality was that no one would contribute anything like the funds needed - so it became a "moral" issue.

Slaves were cheap in Brazil due to proximity to Africa and were freely imported up through the mid to late 19th century. Life expectancy was 3-5 years. As someone said, they were simply worked to death. Being cheap, there was no incentive for owners to take care of them. They were a disposable good.

At the end of slavery, Brazil had fewer than 1mm slaves to emancipate.

In what became the US and the US, something like 1mm slaves were imported in the same 150 year period.

In 1865 the end of slavery, we emancipated 4mm slaves. (Statistical Abstract)

This even though importation of slaves had been illegal in the US for 40 years.

In the US, they were a capital good, limited in supply and very expensive. Owners had an incentive to keep them alive, healthy and breeding. Not all did, but the incentive was always there.

So yeah, conditions in Brazil were considerably worse.

Ironclad,

"Firstly, the Douglas's quotation is hyperbole at its' finest - considering that 90% of the slaves sent to the Caribbean or South American died from overwork or disease compared to an increasing population of slaves in the USA from births (not importation)."

Oh, I guess that made America seem like The Ritz.

"The American slave importation was only around 5-6 % of the total number of slaves brought into the Americas."

Now the attempt to minimize - white people are so predictable. Let's add some perspective to those teeny-tiny numbers, shall we?

“...by 1860, there were more millionaires (slaveholders all) living in the lower Mississippi Valley than anywhere else in the United States. In the same year, the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire U.S. economy, worth more than all manufacturing and railroads combined.”

Doesn't sound the same, does it?

"The seconds point is the contention that the Civil War was fought over freeing the slaves. If it had been advertise as that, there would have been precious little support for going to war."

“That enslavement in America was somehow more than a moral problem became apparent while reading the grandfather of all Civil War histories, James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Battle Cry is ostensibly a history of The Late Unpleasantness, but it is also an expression of the centrality of enslavement in American history.

The first 200 pages or so show that the War was about not only the perpetuation of "African slavery," but its expansion. McPherson quotes directly from the mouths of secessionists who have no problem laying out bondage as their primary casus belli. McPherson shows the essential place enslavement held in the economy of the South and in America at large.”

But you still deny it - THAT's delusion.

"It's telling that in the period before the Civil War that the abolitionists never tried the simple measure of just buying slaves and setting them free."

Because they knew you don't buy humans - something you don't seem to have gathered in the ensuing years.

"There had been no importation of slaves since the early 1800s - so the trade was strictly in people residing in the US. But the reality was that no one would contribute anything like the funds needed - so it became a "moral" issue."

I'm glad I've already got that quote with the "moral argument" bullshit out there - you believe nonsense.

"Spin it all you want Crack - you got sold out by your own people in Africa - both to the Americans and to the Arab lands (which is still going on today)."

Yep - the manipulative tribal people, without guns, merely "sold out" to the innocent Western slave traders who showed up armed.

You really believe this stuff, don't you?

Man, if I was that gullible, these streets would've eaten me alive years ago,...

But agreed with who, jr? Themselves, for agreeing to something for the nation's redemptive good, or the thousands of blacks who have carried and protected it, like a flame in a strong wind of white resistance, for over 150 years?

its very simple. There are only two ways to get freedom. Either overthrow the govt or have the govt give you a seat at the table. I'm not saying that blacks had no role in the narrative for freedom. Of course they did. But they didn't have hands on the levers of power. Whites had to grant them their rights. And lucky for you, enough of them did.

As for reparations, I'd be more worried about Mexicans taking any reparations that might go your way (in the way of social programs). Who is hardest hit now? black people. Sounds like this is the first time you've heard of the book.

You claim to be broke and do not seem happy about it. A natural enough reaction. Not unhappy enough to do anything about it, though.

The reason you are broke is that you apparently have no skills that other people are willing to pay money for. This has nothing to do with your skin color. This is all about you.

Someone suggested you learn to be a welder. There is plenty of good money in that. Or you could learn to program PLCs. Do a 2 year program at a school like Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and you will earn $75,000 per year on graduation.

I have people asking me all the time where they can find PLC programmers. They couldn't care less what color you are as long as you can design and write code. Learn to code and I'll send you some names.

Or you could learn to do something else if that doesn't appeal to you.

Yes, the way blacks have been treated by whites is a huge problem. But your being broke has nothing to do with that. It has only to do with you.

Look at blue states crack. Its the dems that always took about the disparity between the rich and the poor. But where do you see that most prominently? in blue states, of course.
NYC is so expensive that only rich people can live here. And yet the dems demagogue big business as if they don't have the money. I guess the Talented Ten is also a socialist construct, considering the democrats who advocate wealth redistribution are always stinking rich. Its a sop to the poor to get their votes. But it never involves THEIR money.

Sandra Fluke gets sent out as a downtrodden woman who can't afford to pay for her birth control. Boo hoo! War on women. meanwhile she attends an Ivy League college that most Americans couldn't afford in their lifetime. AND dates a 1%er who is so rich he doesn't have to ever work in his life. And is a socialist, naturally.
She can afford her birth control. In fact, considering her riches, maybe she should pay for mine too.

The intelligentsia always have cushy jobs and are set for life. Meanwhile, in Russia under communism the workers had to wait in line for toilet paper. That's what socialism is. In this country its rich (and not just rich but Daddy Warbucks rich) sanctimonious white folks, though many minorities have also made inroads, who've used capitalism to make their riches. And then turn around and pretend they are down with the poor by pushing socialism.
The recipient of the liberals largesse is always the poor and they become poorer from it. Its the talented ten dictating social policy.
Meanwhile, if you pull yourself up by your bootstraps you are responsible for your own salvation.

What a load. People were - and still are - dying to get in, apparently so they could experience the revolting barbarity, etc., so lacking in their countries of origin.

Immigration 1850 to 1930
"Between 1850 and 1930, about 5 million Germans immigrated to the United States with a peak in the years between 1881 and 1885, when a million Germans left Germany and settled mostly in the Midwest. Between 1820 and 1930, 3.5 million British and 4.5 million Irish entered America. Before 1845 most Irish immigrants were Protestants. After 1845, Irish Catholics began arriving in large numbers, largely driven by the Great Famine."
