Look at the new New Republic cover, smearing Scott Walker for his "toxic strain of racial politics."

I live in Wisconsin, and I've been following Scott Walker since the 2010 election here, and I have no idea what the "toxic strain of racial politics" refers to. But congratulations to TNR for its eye-catching and weird sexualization of Walker: "Scott Walker Is So Hot Right Now" and for having the nerve to sub-head with "too bad" as you smear him with the accusation of "toxic strain of racial politics." That "too bad" belongs in the annals of self-refuting statements. Anyone can within one second perceive that The New Republic isn't the slightest bit sad that there's this dirt to throw at Walker... this invented dirt for all I can tell.

If you look at the TNR website right now, you won't see this cover. It's still displaying last week's cover. I subscribe to the magazine, and this new issue just popped into my iPad.

ADDED: I can't link to the article, but I can read it on my iPad. It's titled — creepily — "The Unelectable Whiteness of Scott Walker." Sub-head: "A Journey Through the Poisonous World That Produced a Republican Star." It's written by Alec MacGillis.

AND: I have now read the long article, and the closest thing to anything racial coming directly from Scott Walker is his support over the years for voter ID laws. Much of the article is about the demographics of Milwaukee and the suburban counties around it, including the history — going back into the early 20th century — of how black people migrated to the city and did not — as white people did — relocate into the suburbs.

Milwaukee is an extreme example of this historical pattern, but Scott Walker didn't make this happen, and given that Scott Walker built his political career in the Milwaukee area, it's actually impressive that TNR could not find racial incidents and slips to pin on him.

The article also focuses on 2 talk radio hosts — Mark Belling and Charlie Sykes — who have big audiences in Milwaukee. TNR has little direct racial material on them, but it forefronts the one truly ugly thing it has: Belling mocking a specific black person, Milwaukee Congresswoman Gwen Moore. Mostly, TNR accuses Belling and Sykes of indulging in dog-whistle politics about crime and dependence on welfare.

I suspect that Alec MacGillis wrote a more balanced and sane draft but that TNR editors punched it up, trying to make it racial so they could justify that ridiculous sub-heading on the cover and the title and sub-head at the article. The Unelectable Whiteness of Scott Walker! Terrible. MacGillis provides some material about Scott Walker's early life, mostly about how he's the son of a Baptist preacher who took religion and politics very seriously from an early age. Some of that is sympathetic, though it's dotted with quotes from individuals who have reason to want to block Walker's ascent.

ALSO: Linking here, Instapundit says:
When Chris Hughes relaunched TNR, he promised that TNR would go “deeper than the headlines in a timely, unbiased fashion.” Nah. Just more Democratic operatives with bylines.
AND: I wonder if TNR meant to send out the iPad app version before the material is up on its website. I think it's damned strange that I was able to show you that cover 2 hours ago, and it's still not up on the website, and that I could read the whole long article and give you my subjective understanding of what is in it before you can check the text. Do you think it's lack of website/app coordination at TNR, which would be inept, or do you think they want subscribers to get a special advantage, a sneak peak, which would be naive in a world with bloggers?

UPDATE: It's 6 hours since I posted this, and neither the cover nor the article are up at the TNR website.

UPDATE 2: TNR put the article up Sunday evening: here.

I'm wondering just how much longer the 75% of us who are white are going to keep playing along with this childish charade that your opinion is of no value if you are white (or male, Christian, straight, older than 40, etc.) The Dems sure seem eager to replace the current American population with pliable, ignorant, dependent Third World peasants who can be counted on to vote for ever-larger government, but at some point the Average White Man (and woman) may get the notion that he or she had better start voting with the same one-party tribalism as the other races, and if they do, it will go very hard for the Democrats for a very long time. They may get their cherished "browning of America" in the end, but not before much strife and some real setbacks in their collectivist agenda.

Of course, TNR is going to claim that Walker comes out of a "toxic strain of racial politics".

Racism is the replacement for class consciousness for the post-Marxist Left. Do you expect to read a Marxist who'll come out and say "Holy shit, guys --- this has nothing to do with class conflict!". Analysis through the lens of race is now their bread & butter. Somehow, this racial analysis is supposed to jive with analyses through the lenses of gender, ethnicity, & orientation, which is, of course, a tough row to hoe. But the low hanging fruit of agreement among them all is that they all don't like straight white guys.

The post-Marxist Left is real good at finding racism in conservatives. They're not so good at finding it in their own history, e.g. eugenics, the role of Dixiecrats in the New Deal coalition, Wilsonian progressivism, the exclusion from union jobs of blacks by the Midwestern Communist Party, etc. Of course, they're past all that now. Because only conservatives come embedded in historical narratives. Lefties stand outside of history. Just like they can jump over their shadows....

Anyway, like most Republicans, Walker tends to speak in race-neutral terms, so, yeah, he's not picking up "the banner," but that doesn't mean he hasn't tried to fix the urban problems in Milwaukee that hurt black people. He worked for years in Milwaukee as the county executive, and he's been concerned about the budget and education and the various problems in Milwaukee and now in the state. Why doesn't that count as trying to fix things? Why is it necessary to overtly do racial politics the way Democrats do? Yes it does - he's been "race-neutral" about problems that aren't, so he's been ignoring it.

"He worked for years in Milwaukee as the county executive, and he's been concerned about the budget and education and the various problems in Milwaukee and now in the state. Why doesn't that count as trying to fix things?"

Because he ignored blacks, specifically.

Scott Walker’s dopey defenders: Beltway hacks think racist emails are a snooze

Hires racists, is a segregationist for blocking the light rail proposals of Milwaukee’s mayor.....

These racist emails matter. Scott Walker is the product of suburban Milwaukee backlash politics, which buoyed Republicans in what had become for a while a Democratic stronghold – think Gaylord Nelson and William Proxmire — and also helped make the Milwaukee metropolitan area the single most segregated place in the country. White flight to the suburbs and exurbs explains why, and so does the failure to develop any kind of regional transit system connecting the inner city and those suburbs – and Scott Walker helped block the light rail proposals of Milwaukee’s mayor and other city leaders as Milwaukee County executive.

Althouse is giving Alec MacGillis far more excuses than he deserves. He recently wrote an article about Brat beating Cantor where he decided that the life's lesson was Brat's exposing Cantor's (thus Republican) ties to hedge funds and private equity firms. The lesson to learned was the hypocracy of GOP hacks screaming about crony capitalism at Solyndra while ignoring private equity firms making a killing on the student loans. MacGillis somehow missed that Brat, a Republican had spent a meager 123 grand or so to beat Cantor and that the Green Energy and Student Loan programs emanated from the Donks.

I lived in Milwaukee from 1970-90. When I arrived Milwaukee was under a desegregation order from the federal court, and a special master had been appointed to gather facts and come up with a desegregation plan. I got very involved in this through a court designated and elected group of 100 Milwaukee citizens called (duh) the Committee of 100. My kids were just entering school and this was of personal as well as civic concern to me.

When approved the desegregation plan involved magnet schools with racial targets for enrollment, and new assignment policies designed to increase racial mix. My kids went to some of these magnet schools, which were deliberately placed in previously underachieving buildings, which were generally in less than upscale neighborhoods.

The magnet schools were actually a great success. Terrific teachers, good learning environment, positive social vibes. But desegregation in Milwaukee was overall a great educational failure. The simplest explanation is that desegregation was made a goal, but school improvement overall was not. The will, skill and resources needed to create a major educational improvement were not there.

Nothing is static, and since the schools did not improve, they got worse, notwithstanding the success of some of the magnet schools.

It is easy to pin this on the suburbs, or conservative politicians, but that is not the case. The causes are widespread, but mostly it was a lack of leadership. The vision was not there. The effort was not there.

I do remember the mayor of Milwaukee in that time, Henry Maier. He had been in office for a long time, and was one of the most powerful democrats in the state. At the time, his office had no authority over the public schools of the city. They were governed by an elected school board which separate taxing and administrative power.

Many felt that the city should take over the public schools. The school board was a pretty undistinguished group, and the city and Mayor Maier had a lot more clout, in addition to a clear interest in having a high quality school system in the city.

Henry Maier wanted nothing to do with this. He made it very clear that he did not want the city to take over the schools, and he kept completely clear of the debate raging over how to desegregate the city schools.

To me this was flat out cowardice. Milwaukee was a solidly democratic city, and Maier had firm control politically. He enjoyed strong support from the black community but in those days working class whites were the democrat's main base. The relations between these two groups were none too good. Henry Maier, the great and powerful liberal mayor, was only too happy to let these problems fester on someone else's plate.

But "Racism!" as a meaningful accusation has lost its effectiveness. It's been killed by those on the Left who blame every problem that they can think of on "Racism!", who accuse every person who is even slightly to their right on policy of "Racism!", who insist that every group whose members have achieved less than members of other groups are victims of "Racism!"

Assuming (as I do) that Prof. Althouse has accurately reported The New Republic article, I am confident that it will have NO EFFECT on Walker's Presidential prospects. "Racism!" is a debased coinage. If George Wallace were to rise from the grave to run again for political office, I beg you, don't base your opposition to him on grounds of "Racism!"; no one will listen. We've heard it too much. I just want to say one thing, though it gives me no pleasure whatsoever to do so:

Althouse's comments section is in danger of turning into an unreadable mess, and it's all because of Crack Emcee. Please, somebody exercise some oversight here.

I remember well when Althouse permanently banned a handful of posters who were clogging up nearly every thread with their posts; trolling, making everything about them and their pet issues, being relentlessly nasty and pugnacious. I applauded when she did so, for the simple reason that they had turned one of the most vibrant small online communities into a suffocating thicket of insults, one-man obsessions, and broken discourse.

Crack Emcee is doing it again. I don't know what happened, or what switch flipped, but I fear that if he not removed from this community, it will collapse again. In fact, I already see it happening. He drops into random threads to shriek about racism, in the hopes that everyone will start talking about him. Eventually, enough people take the bait...and nobody talks with (or reads) anyone else. I'm sure Crack is happy with this. I know several other people who are long-time readers of Althouse who are in despair over it.

I have no say in this matter, and I recognize that I even lack moral standing given that I am but a lurker around here. But please...for the sake of one of the most wonderful places on the internet: Ann, Meade, please do something. This place is becoming toxic, and it's essentially now the "Crack Emcee Show."

White racism was the consequence of black slavery, an attempt to explain it away. The Black Africans who were selling millions of black slaves did not need any explanation for slavery, it was as natural to them as hot weather.

Did Martin Luther King, Jr really write that? If he did, he wrote a half-truth, or at best a three-quarter-truth. There are plenty of examples of white being bad and black good. Just off the top of my head:

When the British call Richard II's father "Edward the Black Prince" and name warships "Black Prince", it is not meant as an insult.

Chapter 42 of Moby Dick, "The Whiteness of the Whale", is an extended meditation on the evil and creepy side of whiteness, with examples (white bears, white sharks, deep prejudice against albinos).

Every company would like to be "in the black" all the time. (Being "in the red" is a very bad thing, but that has nothing to do with American Indians.)

In the Bible, when your skin is "white as snow", it means you have leprosy.

Whiteout (the snowstorm kind, not the office supply) is a very bad thing.

Bones whitening in the sun - not a pretty sight.

Black pepper is just as tasty as white pepper, and a lot cheaper: most of us much prefer it.

Personally I hate white noise and don't mind black light, though others may disagree.

Examples could easily be multiplied. Of course, as Thomas Sowell wrote years ago, it would be more accurate to call the races "Pink and Brown People" rather than white and black. Also less misleading, since it would show that they are simply different, rather than opposites.

Chris Hughes, who now owns the venerable New Republic outright, was one of the original FaceBook developers which led in due course to him becoming a wealthy fellow indeed.

He was also in charge, during the run-up to the 2008 elections, of all the Social Media projects at the Obama for President campaign's national HQ in Chicago.

A few weeks before the November ballot date, Mr. Hughes either was or was not personally behind Obama HQ's organized denial-of-service (DOS) attack on the call-in phone lines for old-line liberal prof. Milt Rosenberg's radio talk show, when Rosenberg was interviewing nasty wingnut polemicist Stanley Kurtz, Ph. D., who had just finished researching the archives of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC) held in the library at the University of Illinois, Chicago: a public institution assuredly not to be confused with the very private University of Chicago.

The CAC board was headed by the egregious silver-spoon revolutionary Wm. Ayers; allegedly, "just some guy from the neighborhood", who had handpicked Barack Obama to be its Director throughout the three-year (?) project period. Indeed, that was Obama's sole executive position ever, prior to his entering electoral politics.

Ayers was then still on the UIC faculty, and likely may have instigated the abortive attempt by the UIC Library to withdraw its earlier permission to Kurtz to access the stacks, which collapsed when the center-right blogosphere got wind of that ploy... Although never a word on it appeared in the mainstream media (not least, in the Chicago Tribune, which was and is the owner of WGN).

The terms of the CAC's fund-raising required an uncharacteristically robust post-facto evaluation of the project, which concluded that essentially the $120 million (!) of public and private money raised and spent spent by the CAC went nearly entirely down the toilet.

Almost nothing could be more toxic just then to the upcoming election than a close identification in the public's eye between Obama and Ayers and his politics.

The DOS was a dirty trick on the Nixonian slime scale, and the host of DOS clone calls that did get through parroted the same three lines: "Kurtz is an evil man; WGN is abetting evil by having him on Rosenberg's show; and that therefore WGN's broadcast license must now be revoked by the FCC."

Rosenberg, for his part was just flabbergasted: in three or four decades of broadcasting, he had never been subject to a DOS attack on his call-in lines, and he was rendered almost speechless. Possibly the program can still be accessed online (it was up for at least the following six month) from the WGN website.

It should also be mentioned that the Obama campaign was invited, yea strongly encouraged, by Rosenberg to send a spokesperson to join the program with Kurtz. The campaign not-so-politely declined, claiming they had "insufficient time to prepare" a proper riposte to Kurtz's likely points.

Again, total sound of crickets on that episode from the mainstream media. Including, not least, the Chicago Tribune, nor —to my knowledge— from any other WGN commentators.

This was really an indicator of what the Obamazoids had in store for us...

Also this recent New Yorker chronicled flap about NJ Gov. Christie and ex-Newark mayor, now NJ senator, Corey Booker somehow getting Facebook zillionaire Mark Zuckerberg to drop $100 million into Newark's disastrous public schools, with about the same positive outcome as the Chicago Annenberg Challenge might have never happened had the CAC debacle ever seen the light of day.

Oooh - such insight into the lives and minds of black folks. Very sophisticated mind at work here. Worldly. Knows the Civil Rights Movement like the movement of his bowels.

chick could get rich by writing a book on all the various techniques racist whites have invented, for ripping people off, and then detail how many of those we evil blacks have caught onto so far.

Evil white people LOVE destroying whatever little goodwill their forefathers may have left. I LOVE how the losers all run over - mob-like - from Lem's, pitch forks in hand, to slay the monster.

Black guy says something racial - it's practically a brand new freedom to express ourselves.

I find it interesting that progressives throw stones at Walker. I suspect that he has reduced the amount of racism in Wisconsin. He is starting from a pretty deep cesspit, especially in super progressive Madison so it will take some doing.

Perhaps progressives should focus on changing Madison from being the most racist (or one of the most racist) cities in the US. Then they can complain about others.

I've posted this before but it bears repeating:

See this report from the Wisconsin Council on Families and Children

http://racetoequity.net/dev/wp-content/uploads/WCCF-R2E-Report.pdf

Black/white unemployment Dane County 25/5% US 18/8%

Black/white children living in poverty 75/5% Madison, 39/14% US

Black/white Students who do not take ACT 79/44%, US 50/41%

Black/white juvenile arrest rates 469/77 per 1000, US 71/33

And so on. Read the whole thing.

So Madisonians, get your own house in order before throwing stones at others.

I would add progressives to my plea to get their own racism under control before going after Walker.

Bob,

Wisconsin's own Senator McCarthy, Tailgunner Joe as you call him did actually find a large number of communists working for the US govt in sensitive positions where they had access to top secret info and/or were in a position to influence govt policy.

Perhaps not as many racists as in Madison but certainly a lot.

These were not just people who believed in communism. We are a free society and that is fine with me. These were people who actively collaborated with our primary enemy at the time and one of History's greatest mass murderers, Joseph Stalin.

Perhaps you can give us some names of people who McCarthy accused who later turned out to be innocent of his charges?

Absent that, STFU.

Crack,

What about Asians? Particularly Chinese and, later, Japanese?

They faced very similar situations to blacks. They were not technically brought here as slaves but they were pretty close to it in the latter half of the 19th and first part of the 20th century.

They were lynched at much higher rates than blacks. They may have been lynched in higher absolute numbers.

That faced a level of racism that was pretty much equal to the racism shown to blacks in the error.

Ever hear the phrase "A Chinaman's chance"? It is used to describe a hopeless situation. Often a situation which one does not expect to get out of alive.

Yet they managed to get past this.

Ever wonder how?

Or look at blacks who came to the US from the Caribbean. They came to the Caribbean as slaves much the same as those who came to the US. They pretty much uniformly do better than even whites on average.

Colin Powell (Jamaican parents), Eric Holder (Barbadan ancestry) are two who come to mind. I could come up with plenty more examples if you wish.

How come? How many people do you think realized that either Powell or Holder were Caribbean ancestry? How many people do you think treated them differently from any other black man?

Yet they succeeded pretty well.

How come?

John Henry

John henry म्हणाले...

If it is not too nosy, Crack, what about you?

Where did your ancestors come from? Did they come straight from Africa as slaves? Did they come via the Caribbean or elsewhere? Or did they come as free persons after the era of slavery?

You are so racist you can't even understand my point.

You just want to spew the hate and at this moment, blame Walker for all the problems that blacks have. That's what we here all mean when we say "Racist" doesn't mean anything anymore. Politicians should focus on the welfare of the 'polis' not one of several tribes. If Walker improved the County he improved the welfare of blacks.

You avoided my point about the real source of of oppression. Blacks suffer from damaging exploitation of the black community by thieves and bullshitters. Their aldermen, their school board, their gangs, their community development organizations. The black 'leaders' cry 'Racist' and get the black vote all while letting the black community swirled down the drain.

You just want to spew the hate and at this moment, blame Walker for all the problems that blacks have. With your hatred infused ADD there will be another Republican along at the next moment who is also to blame for all the problems that blacks have.

What do you think of Charles and David Koch (two of the Koch brothers) funding racially segregated schools?

Seems to me that this makes them racists but the definition keeps changing and I have trouble keeping up.

A week or two back they gave $25mm to the United Negro College Fund. UNCF primarily exists to promote segregated, and generally sub-par colleges pretty much for blacks only.

L.N. Smithee म्हणाले...

I was brought to this thread by PowerLine's link. It never ceases to amaze me the way the left -- i.e., Democrat politicians, their strategists, and their media allies -- will try to find a way to hang racism on an undeserving Republican politician or candidate because it is such an effective way to raise money and rally their base.

As for The Crack Emcee: I'm black too. As I have written hundreds of times online to people who presume I'm not because I'm not a liberal, not a Democrat, and can't stand the current administration, I'm twice as black as Barack Obama. And I, like every conservative I've ever met, think reparations for African-Americans are among the dumbest things I've ever heard.

I don't have time to go into it too much, but let this be an entree: The most recent comprehensive argument for reparations was made by writer Randall Robinson in his 2000 bestseller The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks.

Robinson is also known for something else, which I think disqualifies him from discussion about serious matters. In the days following Katrina in 2005, when thousands of black New Orleans residents were awaiting aid and shelter on rooftops, in the soggy streets, and in makeshift shelters in powerless buildings like the Convention Center and the Superdome, Robinson wrote this:

*****

It is reported that black hurricane victims in New Orleans have begun eating corpses to survive. Four days after the storm, thousands of blacks in New Orleans are dying like dogs. No-one has come to help them.

I am a sixty-four year old African-American. New Orleans marks the end of the America I strove for.

I am hopeless. I am sad. I am angry against my country for doing nothing when it mattered.

This is what we have come to. This defining watershed moment in America's racial history. For all the world to witness. For those who've been caused to listen for a lifetime to America's ceaseless hollow bleats about democracy. For Christians, Jews and Muslims at home and abroad. For rich and poor. For African-American soldiers fighting in Iraq. For African-Americans inside the halls of officialdom and out.

My hand shakes with anger as I write. I, the formerly un-jaundiced human rights advocate, have finally come to see my country for what it really is. A monstrous fraud.

But what can I do but write about how I feel. How millions, black like me, must feel at this, the lowest moment in my country's story.

***********

One big problem: It was bullsh!t.

Later, Robinson added this:

************
RETRACTION: The claim in the first sentence in my post was incorrect. I had been told this was happening, but these claims have turned out to be unsubstantiated. I therefore retract them -- but stand behind everything else I wrote without reservation.

************

Yeah, too late, pal. You already showed your derriere. You believed that rumor because you had a distorted idea not only of what was going on in New Orleans, but because you sincerely thought that only after four days, black Americans would actually start doing that.

Learn from Randall Robinson, Crack, before you pull a similar boner.

Even though Katrina was actually the biggest response to a natural disaster by our govt EVER. In terms of money pumped in and resources given. How could you level the charge that when the govt allocates the most it's ever allocated that it hates Black People, as suggested by Kanye and this yokel.
The Katrina rescue was actually not a failure at all but one of the most successful rescue operations in the history of this country.
We moved a hundred thousand or so people out of a flooded city in under two weeks.
I'd reccomend Robinson read the reporting of Lou Dolinar for an example of how we should really look at Katrina:
http://www.sporttaco.com/rec.martial-arts/Katrina_What_Went_Right_3969.html

Sorry, but if you get stuck in a flooded city after the worst natural disaster we've experienced because you didn't feel like leaving or there was no evactuation plan in place you might be inconvenienced a few days while the rescue workers get to you.
People in the Superdome had rations and shelter. The isue facing rescue workers was getting people who were on their roof because their house was flooded. And how many reporters were in helicopters filming those rescues which went on all day.

The guests, naturally, complain to the hosts about the behavior of the dog in their charge. The guests are told that it's not the hosts fault that the snarling , biting dog doesn't like the guests. It's your fault, because the dog can't help it that it doesn't like you, so shut up about the dog, who just started humping the thigh of another guest, after piissing on the shoe of another. Shut up, already. Just ignore the dog and, most importantly, keep enjoying the party.

Well, that makes sense.

And Robinson, Katrina hit more than just New Orleans it also hit neighboring states. Why did you make it then about race. Were those states saying how wonderful FEMA was? No, they too were suffering. But that's because Katrina was a devastating storm which stretched FEMA to its limits. Not because there was neglect going on.
If Robinson doesn't retract the entirety of his point when it's pointed out that blacks didn't resort to cannibalism then he is just a race baiter. And there's no reason to ever expect reasoned conversation from one such as him. Even if its not true, so long as it smears Bush he stands by it. Go to hell.
By the way, at least he's pretending to put up the pretense of not being the racialist he reveals he is. Crack comes right out and announces it.
Robinson and Crack should move next door to each other so they can exchange stories of whitey.

jr565 म्हणाले...

You either get citizenship or reparations and your own island somwhere. Or a back to Africa movement. What do blacks want? Do they really want the 40 acres and a mule? So in this day and age they want to be farmers with a single mule? No house on the property? No farming equipment?
Marcus Garvey tried this already. Didn't fly.
But if Crack really wants it, lets find a place for blacks, like say Detroit, and give it to them. But they would then have to leave any and all white communities. And it would be a separte state, the equivalent of the south seceding from the Union. No money from Washington would go there.
Is that what Crack wants?
