Prairie school with the wide eaves. Nice. Always one of my favorite home memes. Lots of those in my turn of the century(19th/20th century) neighborhood here in North Florida along the St Johns river.

It is a spectacular evening here in Madison. Unfortunately, it's full moon, so no serious star gazing tonight.

Come on:

You're supposed to skip and flail your arms around while singing "Lolly, lolly, lolly!"

At least, that's how black people do it.

We learned all kinds of things by lolling,...

Your front yard looks very nice, especially on an iPad mini retina.
But I'm still having trouble understanding how your property taxes can be so high.

Meade...she has to be planted in the back yard not the front.....Tenured Mulch is the Shizznit!

Well, with any luck, I'll die early and that will be of help to you both.

Lolling, my ass. I know about that more than you guys do.

Levi, location. Its a yuppie neighborhood near campus, fairly small in size. Not a lot of property and a lot of demand.

Look at the quality of that lawn. Amazing.

And you don't have to contend with deer eating any plants.

@Levi - I moved to Blacksburg, VA from that same neighborhood in 1988. The house in Blacksburg was new, had a bigger garage, bigger kitchen, and one more bedroom, cost about 15% more than the Madison House (built in the 1920's.) Taxes were less than half. School's in Madison were much more expensive (though no better) and Madison wasn't into Virginia's solar powered snow removal.

You know, I was thinking about your comment about preferring to read Death In Venice than visiting Venice, and I have to agree that I would not trade having read Pete Dexter's Deadwood for visiting Deadwood.

I haven't read it for a while, but when I did I marveled at the sustained level of artistry of that novel. Somebody here got me to read Blood Meridian, but I think that Betamax writes less turgid prose and the story is just about taking away the myth of the old west. Whatever the west was, the myth is a valuable thing to America.

Nice front yard. The glass balls in the flower boxes look like authentic Asian long line fishing floats. Does someone make imitations?

Thanks.

I'd try eBay.

I love those typical Upper Midwest neighborhoods- it looks very much like the one I grew up in in St. Paul. What do you call the strip of grass between sidewalk and street? We called it the 'boulevard'.

Mike Needham ayon kay ...

Actually, we have real ones around our pool. I was wondering if you would grace Meade house with commercial fishing gear as well.

Meade ayon kay ...

Here in Madison, people call them "terraces" and down in Cincinnati I heard people call them "tree lawns" or "curb lawns".

"I was wondering if you would grace Meade house with commercial fishing gear as well."

You mean like Labrador retrievers?

Jaq ayon kay ...

Labradors are the best dogs.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

I grew up calling that part of the yard "the extension."

Mike Needham ayon kay ...

Labrador retrievers are commercial fishing gear? Wow.I was asking a polite question and got an answer so obtuse it could have come from Obama.
