At the Pink-and-Yellow Café...

... you can raise whatever topics you like. I've got moderation on these days though, so have some patience about seeing your comment go up.

By the way, please consider doing your on-line shopping at Amazon by going in through the Althouse portal.

I'm just noticing Amazon's FireTV, a new product in the Roku/Apple TV niche.

I got a FireTV. Just got here this afternoon.

I like it. But I didn't have anything to compare it to.

Repeating what I wrote in my comment on a different post.

Your picture makes me feel like I'm back in a classroom and came to class unprepared.

It's a nicer picture than the one with you in yellow and the previous one with you facing away. But please! A smile that doesn't make me feel guilty so many decades after I got my degree.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Okay, I tried a different one. (It's old, not new.)

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Eh… I tried a few and didn't like them.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Okay, I tried another one.

Big Mike বলেছেন...

Whoa! That was a quick change, Professor. But can you have Meade pick the picture? Let the world see you as he does.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"I like it. But I didn't have anything to compare it to."

I have Roku, which it seems a lot like and which I rarely use, because I still pay for cable service, which I don't use much.

The transition away from cable is slow but it seems inevitable. But the one thing we do watch around here is sports.

What got my comment pulled? Was it (a) suggesting that Prop 8 politics was ugly, and using the Google Map/opensecrets.org mashup as an example; or (b) suggesting that I was taking Firefox off of my computers; or (c) Andrew Sullivan's high dudgeon was hypocritical?

What was so incorrect that the comment was deleted?

I guess gay people aren't supposed to comment on gay issues. What an ugly nasty arbitrary judgment call you made, Ann.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

@Scott I accidentally hit the wrong button recently. It had nothing to do with any content, so if I deleted yours, I apologize. Try reposting.

I'm especially sorry to put you through the effort of trying to figure out what you did wrong.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"What an ugly nasty arbitrary judgment call you made, Ann."

Well, there, now, you made a judgment call, didn't you?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"Whoa! That was a quick change, Professor. But can you have Meade pick the picture? Let the world see you as he does."

There really aren't many pictures of me, but I tend not to like the ones he likes.

Big Mike বলেছেন...

@Althouse, my wife says the same thing about my choices of pictures of her. But I'll be Meade looks at you with love the same way I look at my wife. Trust him to pick the one that shows you as the woman he is in love with.

So I watched All in the Family on Wednesday.

A black man wants to buy Archie's house.

It is a scam because there are no blacks in the neighborhood and Archie is supposed to be a good neighbor and not sell to a black man because that man can then sell the house to another black man/family for double or triple the inflated price that Archie got.

Meathead, the wife and the daughter can't allow Archie to sell because...

Well that's what I don't understand.

They are saying it would be crappy to sell to someone black because the neighbors would hate living next to a black family. This is the good, liberal position whereas Archie wanting to sell his home for a profit is horrible because he wants to sell to a black man.

Hell, Crack is 30% correct that America is a racist, oppressive prison to blacks because that's what Democrats and Leftists have been creating and preserving for 400 years.

George Wallace lives on in syndication via All in the Family through Meathead, his wife, and the mom.

Neat colors and railing. I'd bet they serve American comfort food including mac and cheese and some vegetables they were proud of and, for dessert, fruit compote or short puddings where you break the crust.

"Archie is excited when a real estate agent wants to buy his house for a huge profit. He figures it is a good deal because he and the family move out to California to stay with a rich relative while looking for a place to live. When the agent comes by the house, he offers Archie $35,000 and Mike alerts him that the man is a Blockbuster, a scam artist who exploits the owners' fears of lower prices if racial minorities live in the area. Archie doesn't believe him and is ready to sign away the house. Edith becomes very vocal and refuses to give in to a situation that she thinks will see her family selling all of their precious memories. Archie won't listen until Bertha drops in to tell him that the supposedly rich relative in California is flat broke and that the family would be living in his garage. Archie changes his mind and rushed out the door to warn the neighbors."

So he will overpay Archie but Archie's relative isn't rich so Archie's windfall isn't worth it?

Archie gets more than market value and that will depress real estate prices because of white flight?

It's gross racism from elitist leftists, just like Colbert and his Ch*^# Ch*^+ "jokes."

I like that picture a lot.
You not only look beautiful, it has a very dramatic quality.

Sports is the only thing we miss from cable. We haven't had it for about three years and don't miss it at all. The Roku plus an $8 streaming Netflix sub plus DVDs at the library provides us with far more entertainment than we have time for. And from everything I hear about the offerings on basic cable, I'm grateful to keep that shit out of my home.

My husband pays for a MLB streaming subscription so that he can watch his favorite team. I would like to watch college football on Saturdays (Gig 'em!) but since there's no way that I know of to do that without cable we go without.

I like the current picture. It's appropriate for a blog that features a lot of skeptical commentary.

It's like the Fire, if you're connected to the Amazon orbit, it's a great choice. The remote really works for voice commands. I have an XBox Kinect, and it was always making me repeat, repeat, repeat what I said. The Fire TV has gotten it right every time so far.

Can also play games, which I'm interested in. Also good educational stuff out there, for kids.

I'm right in the target audience for this, so I think I'll like it. Very user friendly. Been trying it out all afternoon.

Definitely part of the move away from cable. The Plex app connects to my desktop, so I can increasingly get shows and movies transferred and have full media access.

How often do you check your gmail account? I found something on Amazon for you and Meade.

"Now serving coffee"

I've seen such bizarre signs. It's like a car dealership having a "Now selling cars" sign outside.

Now, if it said "Get yer coffee fix here", or "Coffee!!! (IV not included)", "We have the best God damned coffee this side of the fault line.", or "Coffee. Yes, you can drink it all day!"...

I like the railing in the picture. Gives me ideas for a project.

We dumped cable TV months ago. Now it's just the Roku and Chromecast.Fewer distractions.

Rusty বলেছেন...

The new picture. You look bored.

chillblaine বলেছেন...

Thanks persiflage! I got my new word of the day and a chuckle from your profile pic.

Ann, I think your original pic is still the one I prefer. There was one about a week ago where you had vulnerable, slightly impatient expression, that was pretty good too. Still getting used to this one.

Well, it looks like "micro aggressions" are back with a vengeance.

PS -- if anyone can tell me why this Fire Tv thing is better than Roku, that would be lovely.
