Yeah, the comments are moderated, and that means the old chatty cafés of yore are gone. The back-and-forth has given way to individual statements. But they will all go up in the end… all except for those of a couple people that must be forever excluded, extremely unlikely to be you, so… carry on.
Obama is now scheduled to visit the landslide in Oso, Washington. I can't imagine what his huge entourage will do to the quiet two land road. Hopefully, he uses a helicopter.
He must be coming to proclaim something?...all mortgages are forgiven? Maybe a little community organizing, and spread a little money around.
It will be interesting to see which local politicians attempt to burnish their images, and appear with Obama.
I'm doing my taxes and get to Schedule A. My wife and I had loaded up our medical expenses in 2013 so that we could take the medical deduction. What a surprise to discover that the base is now 10% of income rather that 7.5% of income like it has been for years and years. The result is rather than a nice deduction, our expenses including 12 months of premiums and two major surgeries barely qualified for any deduction.
This will be another nail in the coffin for the statists in 2014 for every taxpayer newly discovering this change as April 15 approaches.
Is that a canine impersonation of Pelosi or of Miley? Should the Dane County Humane Society apologize for it regardless, since it's a dog and therefore clearly speaks for all dogs?
I'm very glad that you post pictures that you and/or Meade take. The pictures always look great, and the subject matter is never boring. Keep them coming.
Listening to Crack Emcee on the radio the other day I was amazed how different his persona came across from his comments here and on his blog. So much for self expression.
RecChief, the energy has to come from somewhere. It doesn't just float around, waiting for us to use it, unless you're talking fission or fusion. If it's combustible, the energy started somewhere, and not as H2O.
CWJ, do you think voters' memories are that long? I doubt they'll punish anyone at the polls for higher taxes this year.
The chatty cafés of yore are gone? I challenge that with the following: yer all ignorant creeps! If you were in my living room, I'd take away yer Fritos.
So there is no way to automatically block someone from commenting? I guess that's because a determined asshole can change their assholic identity at will and fake the system. Or something.
Oh well. It's still a great blog. Thanks Althouse for all the effort.
"CWJ, do you think voters' memories are that long? I doubt they'll punish anyone at the polls for higher taxes this year."
Of course so, if you're the one paying the higher taxes because a deduction you planned for was no longer there. Why would you say such a stupid thing?
First, there is now a sign language interpreter sitting and facing the section where we sit. I liked the way this person used facial expressions to convey tone of voice.
There is also a live painter. The teaching, or whatever one wants to call it, is going on, and a guy is painting the whole time, and at the end, the painting is done. I googled this later and found that this is a Thing. I'm guessing they added it because young people like it. (Something like 600 college students go to our church.)
I like the church because it somehow contains the hippies, the punks, the addicts, the professionals, the aged, the traditional, the far out, the students, the parents, the gays, the outdoorsmen, the artists, and so on all in one place, and they all get along and love each other. It's like for an hour you already died and went to heaven.
...a couple people that must be forever excluded, extremely unlikely to be you...
I'm sure I can't be the only one who wonders what it takes to join the ranks of the exalted few. If people as obnoxious as Shouting Thomas, Crack, Betawhatev, and even myself couldn't get moderation turned on, your standards must be extremely high. Maybe you could post some examples, so we know what to aspire to.
@El Dorado, did you read the article? apparently they chemically separate Hydrogen from Oxygen in a fuel cell, then reformulate it with CO2 as a hydrocarbon.
I'm hoping that it turns out better than the stove top cold fusion hoax from a couple of decades ago.
I think heard Eric Holder say that the President has some discretion in executing the laws, but that the DoJ and he as Attorney General has a lot under the Constitution.
But as I remember it, the Constitution only says that Congress shall establish a DoJ and organize it with such regulations as it may from time to time adopt, or some such language.
So, if the DoJ's very existence derives from Congressional action, where does Eric Holder get all that discretion to interpret the statutes passed by Congress as he wishes, or even just plainly ignore them?
the Second Law of Thermodynamics still affects this process.
The energy used to manipulate H20 and C02 from seawater to generate hydrocarbons is going to be greater than the energy released by using the generated fuel.
However, moving away from pumped-oil-from-the-ground may be a good move.
Sure I'm familiar with the second law of thermodynamics, as well as the Law of consrvation of energy.
From what I read, sorry it's not a chemical process - ionization, it looks likethey are taking a "system in equilibrium" and creating a disequilibrium by separating out hydrogen and CO2.
I'm working from memory of HS and college phsyics courses, so there's a pretty good chance I'm nowhere near the nutshell of this. Oviously there is external energy somewhere as they say that they will be able to produce this "fuel" at a cost of between 3 and 6 bucks a gallon. not free energy by any means, but if it became widespread enough, that would tend to take the middle east out of any role of importance on the world stage, wouldn't it? NOt ot mention the short term effect of not having to have an oiler in a naval battlegroup.

... you might do better without your tongue sticking out.
And not twerking!

OK,
Here's yet another pseudo-Obamacare story.

That dog intimidates women and empowers rape culture.
Or so I've heard.

here is something interesting from the Daily Mail of all places.
Seawater as fuel
Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs has some sex scenes that work, owing to their being unserious.
The gets-the-man is done okay but not as nicely as in Get Smart, which has the explicit double yes. (Yes to the man, and then yes to that yes.)
The characters are a little baffling but you can overlook it since they like each other in the end.
Forever excluded...wandering the Internet...like Caine.

Also: I saw the new Captain America movie the other day, and meh. It's not as good as some people are saying. Good, though.
Some interesting language being used by the Attorney General to Rep. Gohmert at the House oversight hearing today.
Has there ever before been an example of a U.S. Attorney General using that tone at the House of Representatives?
I am wondering if maybe the stress has been too much for Eric Holder, and he may not be all there any more.
Here's a black lab with it's tongue out-sorta
In the background is what 20 minutes of howling wind does to the ice you were just fishing on-

I am Bob Ellison. I put two comments up there that were attributed to "El Dorado". I don't see how that's possible, but Professor:

My bad: "El Dorado" was someone on my network. All my bad.
Met a Black Lab once.
Immediately, the lab's tongue starting darting in and out. Like she was trying to lick me, even though I was still one stride away.
The owner said, "she can't control her lick-er."

There are new things going on at church.

I'd like to echo what David said

Turns out the live painter was just the one time. Which is fine.
