I wish I could do that. Look at some mundane thing, like a sunrise or sunset, and be "dazzled". But I can't. I just see the Earth turning and it bores me.
And to make it even worse, the things that make this place interesting or the things that need to get done, no one else has any interest in. Help the poor? Pish-posh, let 'em help themselves. So proud.
It helps if someone can make the experience real to people.
My ex-instructor (at the university level) and his wife were plunged into true poverty a few years ago and he wrote about it in eXile. It's all about the cold:
Thanks for posting those. It's where I am now and, though I've been hesitating to sell my car, I'm going to do it immediately. I got robbed yesterday and have been managing extreme depression since. And this struck a nerve:
"I had become a louder, more desperate, excessive person. When I tried to sound positive, it came out furious."
I just wrote about how good sleep is now this morning. It's my best friend. I even look forward to the sensation of falling asleep, the kind of stars-in-the-head thing that happens before you nod off. I hate waking up.
Anyway, I've only read the first one and am going to read the others. I'm almost there. Time to prepare.

Are you such a sourpuss that you miss what is funny and why I said "dazzled"?

Interesting take: a sunset "coming up"?

Ann Althouse,

Yes. I don't get it. Honestly.
Hey, SOJO, I found your friend's writing so informative I checked out the rest of the blog and found this - it snapped my depression!
Thanks!
Hey Crack,
Glad to hear it, especially that the Django article broke through the haze. Makes me happy.
Yeah, the eXile(d) had some good stuff. Unfortunately, it was shut down, but has since incarnated in other forms.

What other forms?
Several of the principals are involved with NSFWcorp.com and shameproject.com.
The NSFWcorp.com masthead lists eXile co-founder Mark Ames, Gary Brecher (The War Nerd), John Dolan, and Yasha Levine.
Co-founder Matt Taibbi now writes for Rolling Stone, among others.
The reviewer of Django lectures at UC Berkeley.
The eXile's rise and fall was detailed in Vanity Fair:
