"Man calls police to say he's being haunted by the Ghost of Christmas Past."

"For some reason, the South West has been deluged with spooky happenings over Christmas."
Police investigated a "zombie" attack in Redruth, which turned out to be two friends off their faces on hooch and foaming at the mouths. A woman in Exeter said her horse's mane was been platted by an unseen being (check yer hands, love – it's probably you) and a frightened woman in Ilfracombe rang 999 to report finding a stick "which she can only describe as something maybe used in witchcraft." Or maybe just a stick.

Or is there a miniature subdivision pictured there?

The OED has a definition for the verb "plat": " 2. trans. To braid, to intertwine; to plait (hair, straw, etc.); to form (a hat, etc.) by plaiting. Now chiefly Eng. regional."

My sciatica is bad this morning, and I feel like being difficult.

I'm sorry, sir, but we have no authority over ghosts. Manacles won't stay on them, you know. Have you a cross to wave at it?

What is the Romney connection?

"What is the Romney connection?"

LOL. Just random auto-complete nonsense.

South-West England is a fast diminishing outpost of Celtic culture in the formerly sceptered isle. Some still speak a variant of Gaelic called Cornish. This is the home of Tintagel and Camelot if it existed. The ancestral home of King Arthur and perhaps the land of Faery. I'm not surprised there are more extra-ordinary events being reported here.
