Swan Lake.

Swans on Lake Mendota, late this afternoon. I only had my iPhone, and I don't know how to zoom.

I was sure I could give you easy zooming instructions, but, alas, it turns out there is no zoom in video mode. I guess there are some apps for that, of course.

So where do the Lake Mendota swans go when the Alberta Express rolls into town and freezes the Lake? Do Madisonians take them into their basements until spring?

I am in love with HBO's J'aime, Private School Girl.

Swan Lake is on my Ipod. Sometimes when walking the rare clumber at the Fells in fab Winchester I put it on.

And...do dramatic dance with stretched out arms reaching for the sky, split leaps, grande pleays and jazz runs with fosse hands.

tits.

Come on. My four-year-old can zoom. You just stick your arms out to either side, waggle them like airplane wings (the SR-71 Blackbird, for preference), and say ZZZZZOOOOOOOOOM! Then run about.

You don't know how to zoom?!

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

I do now.

I was out there in 17° weather, not seeing how.

On my phone with an old OS I just have to tap to zoom.. on my husband's phone with a later OS, you have to use the gesture (I was tapping it like I do on my phone) -- so I can understand at 17 degrees, trying to find using two fingers to zoom would be difficult..

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

I assumed it was a tapping thing. I was wrong.

I don't believe you have an actual optical zoom (moving lens) on an iPhone, so all you're doing by "zooming" is asking the camera to pre-crop the photo for you, so the pixels in the center take up more space on the screen.

Why not just crop the photo afterward, and blow it up? Any old photo manipulation software will do the job. Plus you get to specify where exactly the photo is cropped.

Swans are great. Saw three big Trumpeters in a field the other day. Hopefully some shitheel doesn't shoot them for fun.

The lake surface looks like it's in the midst of phase change.

Looks darn cold out there with ice forming on the shore.

Reading Taranto's excellent column and

Is this what gets printed in the prestigious WaPO pages and is this what goes for journalism in the golden age of Obama:

In a post titled "Why Millennials Will Come Around on Obamacare," he enumerates six reasons why young adults will soon be greeting insurance salesmen as liberators:

1. Young people are not actually invincible. . . .

2. Going without insurance is morally wrong. . . .

3. It's the law. . . .

4. People haven't grasped how the subsidies work yet. . . .

5. Pressure from mom and dad. . . .

6. Being uninsured sucks!

In our household, we are having a discussion about why Romneycare "worked" in MA and why Obamacare may not work nationally. May be Althouse can introduce a post with that question. As my husband points out we are not interested in political answers but we want hard numbers, logic, analysis, including examining the premise that Romneycare is "working" in MA.

I saw a muskrat swimming around in Lake Mendota once. It gave me a nice feeling, that here was a lake still relatively unspoiled, and wildlife still going about their business.

Are there still muskrats there?
