Some people here in the U.S. shoot pistols into the air to celebrate New Year's Day. People have been killed from a falling bullet.

In Baltimore, MD, on New Years Eve, I could sit in my living room in Hampden and count the shots - 6 for revolvers, 15 for the Glock 19s, 17 for the Glock 17s, 7 for the 1911s.

Jesus, as stupid as the tradition is, you're not supposed to *empty the weapon*. The husband of an old friend of my mother's badly hurt his back going outside on a New Years to fire off his shotgun. As far as I know, the weapon didn't go off - one of the few cases I'm aware of where someone was badly hurt *despite* good trigger discipline.
