"Obama plans to 'make government cool again.'"

"Barack Obama addressed the wide distaste for government... 'Our campaign from the beginning has been about changing government,' he said, recalling some great accomplishments of American government: Civil rights legislation, the interstate highway system, and the National Park system. Obama would, he said, 'transform Washington' and 'make government cool again.'"

Ben Smith, writing in Politico, September 11, 2008.

Maybe Obama should just open a few more national parks and call off the rest.

The night before the '08 election, I happened on an in-studio interview of John Densmore, the Doors drummer. He said he was voting happily for this guy Obama because he'd met him at a gathering a few months earlier--"and he was the coolest guy in the room." Asked to elaborate, he said that was it; the reason to vote for the president of the United States.

Some people just get older, not smarter or wiser. Methinks that if Morrison hadn't checked out in '71, he wouldn't give much credence to being the coolest guy in the room.

Liberal leftist idealogues all worship tyrants, so he has succeeded.

For normal Americans, not so much.

"Again?"

Gov't is never cool. It's necessary. It does some good, and some bad. It's expensive - probably more so if it tries to be cool. Government, today, is mostly a pain in the ass.

And that's not cool.

Oh, and as Obamacare unfolds, it will change Washington. It'll swing power over to the Repubs in a big way. It will do to the Democrats what Watergate did to the Republicans except double. Remember, you heard it here first.

There are just too many people here with too much to lose. Hell, even the damn AFL-CIO came very close to condemning ObamaCare at their general meeting in August. The Democrats will learn the hard way the wisdom of D.P. Moynihan's rule that major legislative changes do not stick without the support of at least 70% of Congress.

It's so cool to be a "great killer" and also the worst thing to happen to health care since HMOs! So damn COOL!

I am thinking that this must be the most bald-facedly corrupt administration in U.S. history.

How can this be "cool"?

'make government cool again.'

Excellent example of Obama nebulous rhetoric.

The un-critical listener hears "Whatever disagreeable experience you have had with government, you will no longer experience; Whatever enjoyable experience, will be increased."

Brings to mind the comment about Bill Clinton, that 'whatever it was you went to see him about, you came away thinking he supported it.'

See also: "This is the health insurance policy that best suits your needs."

See also: "These are not the droids you are looking for."

Again, "South Park" was on it last week - really, the only ACA-themed TV episode worth watching.

Turns out Reagan was wrong. The scariest phrase in the English language is actually "I'm from the government and I'm here to prove that I'm cool."

Read this article from CNN's website. Ask youself "Is this a news or an opinion article?"

Believe it or not, I think this article was thought by its author to be a news article.

All of which could have been handled by the states or even private enterprise. The federal government should focus on its ordained and established mandates. They were never cool. They will never be cool. They are tolerated as an oversight group, which often exhibits its predisposition to overstep mandates, and run amuck in the most perverse fashion.

Megaera म्हणाले...

Wait until the Employer Mandate kicks in, and people start to realize what THAT bit really entails. Government not cool, so much as Cold, hard and Cold as glacial ice. Check out the employer penalties that have been driving all the hiring and full-time-to-temp transitions so far, and realize that while a LOT of medium-size businesses won't be able to pay the wildly inflated Obamacare premiums coming up, they will buckle and fall anyway under the per-employee penalties for sending their people to the exchanges. Wanna see ugly, keep watching.

Apparently I did not understand, definitionally at least, what 'cool' was, is or looked like...

Now that Obama has clarified 'cool', I'm not liking it at all.

You have to understand the appeal of "cool" ... people like "cool" leaders, because such leaders are far less likely to harsh their mellow about their own choices and pet vices with credible criticism.

Do not underestimate the power of this motivation, in the lives of many who lean Left.

One of the primary indicators of "not cool" is claiming to be cool, thus any attempt to make govt "cool" was doomed to make govt even less cool.

Of course, there's also the question of why one would want govt to be cool.

Apart, of course, from the "people don't think that I'm cool if I live off of govt", aka, yet another "self-esteem" movement induced disaster.
