Neo-Neocon — a propos of my post showing me in cowgirl dress at age 4 — emails to show me her picture of herself at approximately age 4, dressed as a cowgirl:
She was inspired by Jane Russell (in "Son of Paleface"). I was inspired by... can you tell?... one of my readers could...
... Sally Starr.

Just think, Althouse, the coming generation may now be inspired by 'cowpersons,' if we're lucky.
The local TV stations no longer employ a character like Sally Starr....or my favorite J.P. Patches. It seems like they now depend upon the talking-head newscaster to promote their brand.
I grew up in South Jersey and Sally Starr, Gene London, and Pixanne were the Philly kid shows. That outfit definitely has the Sally Starr look.
Pixanne I only vaguely remember.
I loved Gene London. He was a Mr. Rogers type before the days of Mr. Rogers. Nice to have such a gentle male role model along with a feisty female.
I wasn't a fan, but I remember being moved by the obituary of Dale Evans. She was an ex blues singer who made an honest effort to be worthy of the adulation that kids gave her.
Roy Rogers would NEVER have been caught playing with his lariat in a theater.

I suppose the male equivalent would be being inspired by Don Knotts instead of Clark Gable.

No, it's more like being inspired by Clint Eastwood instead of Warren Beatty.

Ooooh. That's gonna leave a mark!(And I agree!)
My chemistry teacher in 8th grade was also a cameraman at WCAU in Philly. Told stories about how the staff played Gene London and Pixanne against one another - creating terrible rivalries. He probably lied a lot. I never believed what he told me about chemistry. (I could see him in the credits for the NFL games out of Philly, so I knew that was true. Didn't trust anything else.)
