"I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket..."

A reader sent me that, with the message: "This is right up your alley I think."

Im not sure how this is up your alley, unless Meade sent it to you. It kind of sucks. Sorry if the person who sent it to you wrote it or rapped it.

first....the old geezers in the video can get hit by a car...from the 1940's. Happy?

second...this will be the dance music at the first AlthouseParty for the common taters! Like the comments themselves, you will be vetted! Bring your B+ game, and make Ann work for the A game! Sausage, cheese and beer are pro forma! Meade can spin platters, and we set our drinks on coasters with various Constitutional Amendments on them...

third....I need some more Cake!

I want to be the girl with the most cake.

I want to be the girl with the most cake.

Here's Bow Wow Wow singing I Want Candy.

All the names and professions reminded me of the way The Onion does "American Voices"

Women rarely sing about lust. They sing love songs, or relationship songs, or about heartbreak. They might sing an angry song. Women will sing about all sorts of things.

But I can't think of a woman singing a guy's name over and over.

It's funny how men will do that. Barbara Ann. Gloria. Cecilia. It's a very specific, very obsessive type of song, and men do it all the time.

I started the video and immediately realized, this is theme song to "Chuck"!

Loved that show . . .

God that's awful. "I'm glad I'm not young anymore."

David ayon kay ...

"Jimmy Mack"

"Ode to Billy Joe."

"Me and Bobby McGee."

"Johnny Angel"

"Will You Marry Me, Bill?"

Samples only. It's a long list.

Love the song by the way.

the cake is a lie!

I guess they didn't watch "Chuck". That song played during the opening of the show.

Some of the comments did not seem that sincere. It's like they thought that if they said something nice their comment would be on the radio or quoted in an ad.

God that's awful. "I'm glad I'm not young anymore."

I have it in my iTunes library and I'm not young anymore.

The song was...okay. Not awful, not memorable.

Firstly, I am a fan of the band and their music/sound.

Secondly, I love how "meta" this music video is. I honestly put it in the top 50 music videos ever.
At the burgeoning height of this band's success they make a video with people talking over their song, often critical or even indifferent. It's an "anti-music-video" insomuch as music videos were *always* implicitly about selling the music. This video is about selling Cake's intangible attitude towards pop-culture expectations, criticism, and at the same time coming off as a band who knows how to have fun at their own expense (literally). And, yes, I get that selling attitude has always been a part of Rock/Pop/Music Videos too. BUT, to release a video in the 90's, when you are just starting to break it big; that purposely obfuscates your (catchy) song is... top 50 material in my book.

P.S. Also fun, how it predates by a decade "viral videos" and "social media" but incorporates comments that would someday belong on a YouTube page for the same video/song.

Cake rocks! One of the absolute best bands to come out of the last decade.

"With fingernails that shine like justice"

One of my favorite lines from rock music in the last 10 years.

Hmmm....I don't recall the TV show, but I do recall the music. Who's the vocalist??

Douglas B. Levene ayon kay ...

Saint Croix wrote: "Women rarely sing about lust." That may be true as a general matter, but then there is Liz Phair, e.g., "Johnny Feelgood" and "Supernova."

Cake is very tasty though. Their video for "Mustache Man (Wasted)" is hysterical.

"Short Skirt and Long Jacket" was my first taste of Cake (!) and they are a most unique blend of vocal, lyric and instrumental energy. Get "Fashion Nugget" (Parental Guidance Suggested) and listen to "'Friend' is a Four-Letter Word". Also, great driving songs 1)"Long Line of Cars" and 2)"Stick Shifts and Safety Belts". All fun the fiftieth time you play them.

There is another version of this song with a faster tempo. Flows much better.

Mountain Maven ayon kay ...

A great song! On my ipod for years. I know a woman who embodies it.

Lucinda Williams does....and does it well.

You want Cake?

Here's Cake with an awsome twist:

Resistance is useless. It is useless to resist it.

Robert ayon kay ...

Awesome, not awsome.

Fck.

Danno ayon kay ...

I like Cake, but tend to prefer the songs like "Rock"n" Roll Lifestyle", "Never There" or "No Phone". Great Indie band, snarky attitude, plus a horn section!
