The N.F.L. hung a banner of Ravens quarterback Joey Flacco above Denver’s stadium...But it wasn't quite the same.

Denver trounces Baltimore, after Baltimore thwarted Baltimore.
The Baltimore Orioles kept the Baltimore Ravens from having what they'd earned: a home game for the opener.

Manning!
But the important thing is that Baltimore got thwarted, because Baltimore needs thwarting.
Ray Lewis was much missed. Denver tried to hold the score down by letting the let the ball fall to the ground before crossing the goal line gesture, but nothing could get Flacco going.
Never heard the Ravens' QB referred to by the diminutive "Joey" before.
As a Baltimoron, I was disheartened by the game's results. One positive note was the ability to go to bed at a reasonable hour as the result victor seemed easy to determine at the end of the third quarter.
I'm not a big fan of Thursday games. It was already a slog on Monday's during football season. And a good Monday night matchup made Tuesday rough too. But throw an unproductive Friday in there, and how the hell am I supposed to get any work accomplished in this place!
(note: these are my theoretical sentiments. In reality I lost my job a month ago and barring getting the kids to school, I can pretty much zombie walk until noon. Thanks Obamacare!)
The Ravens didn't "earn" anything -- they could have opened their season at home on Sunday or Monday no problem. Thursday night belonged to the Orioles, who'd just got back from a long road trip and are in the middle of a stretch where they play 33 games in 34 days.
Screw the NFL, and their massive egos.
Self destruction is nothing new in Baltimore.
