At the Walled Garden Café...

Untitled

... how do you get in to talk about whatever you want, which was the tradition in Althouse "café" posts? I thought the switch to moderation implied the end of the old cafés, but as Meade pointed out, they can work just fine in the new regime of moderation. You can talk about anything you want, but you have to wait for the moderation to happen. So the old back-and-forth is not supported, unless you revisualize it happening very slowly.

Anyone else suddenly having challenges on this site with constant pop-ups for analytics.js from a.sitemeter.com?

...Or did I just place my lack of tech savvy on embarrassing display?

Oh! Only one comment after all that time!

I guess the moderated café concept isn't good.

Hey Ann,
Go read the Seymour Hersh article.
Thats what I'm talking about.

I'm not seeing any such popups on the site...

Give it some more time. We were weaned from hyper interaction and don't miss it all that much. However I do miss sharing some commenter interactions, liked those with the sincere Inga and many other sharp commenters. But your mind is the real attraction here.

Considering who are now getting their underwear all twisted up about the potentially imminent "government shutdown," I am beginning to think it might be a good idea to have one after all.
Perhaps even a protracted one.

The Brits have drifted into a situation where the House of Commons is the government, and the King and House of Lords mainly serve ceremonial functions; any influence they have are such personal reputations as some individuals may have gained in life.

Under the American system - with a written Constitution - the President and the two Houses are still supposed to contend, negotiate, and, in the end, work together.

Krauthammer is right; you cannot govern the country from the House of Representatives alone, but neither can you govern without it, and that is what is being attempted here.

Ah, yes, the old cafés were a way of me saying I'm going to be away for awhile so here's a place you can talk to each other. If my being away means there won't be any moderation until I come back, the old function seems completely lost. (I might still be going in and approving comments, which could be done on the fly at times when I'm not likely to be writing.)

Thanks. I wish I could have preserved that part of free, open comments that was good, but sometimes a garden needs a wall.

You might find The Last Psychiatrist blog... interesting, infuriating, provoking. I don't watch the television but LP embeds the video artefacts he or she refers to. In medias res but....

"... There's a gigantic error in the ad, yet to most people the ad is totally believable, like this is a hidden camera vid, this error is invisible to them; and if this error was corrected this ad would have never been possible. Do you see it? Why didn't one of these "men" just walk her to her car? Three guys, not one thought of this? She's under your umbrella and your natural instinct was not to protect, to help? So wrapped up in what it all means and power imbalances that you couldn't just... behave? Ok, forget about chivalry-- out of sheer selfishness, a hail mary longshot? Sure, no expectations, but what the hell, let's see where it goes, maybe she'll ask you out for a Guinness? Were you so insulted by her "entitlement" that you couldn't just try? Or so flustered because a woman that you have stripped of her ordinary humanity and forced her to be a symbol of value chose to be near you, your brain couldn't figure out what to do next? In which case her decision to leave you for another umbrella was astutely correct, odd how she and the commercial knew that. All men are good for is an umbrella because she cannot rely on men to act like... men...."

Given the posting delay because of moderation, a cafe should be more than a one day affair. Not exactly sure how you might accomplish this, since on Blogger once the thread is cast, it's set in cement (unmovable) - which means it drops down further and further from sight with each successive post, and cannot be pulled back up.

In the meantime...

While I'm here, I want to mention that the happiest man in the country right now is Barack Obama - because even he never imagined that wrecking the country would be so easy. So, if you happen be on Pennsylvania Avenue tonight, don't be even the slightest bit surprised to hear the rollicking music coming from the White House.

That's simply not true. I could move it by changing the time stamp. I just don't want to.

I stand corrected.
