I suspect that if environmentalists decry the practice of controlled burns to clear the underbrush, which is the fuel for fires, nature will do it for them. The cynic in me knows that environmentalists want Hetch Hetchy drained and the entire are returned to wilderness so there will be few tears for devastation. The rains will return and most of the ash will wander down the Merced river heading for the San Joaquin delta. I'm wondering how the protected delta smelt will respond to the burn detritus intrusion. Consequences....
overall, the Federal government's policy of fire suppression (e.g. Smokey the Bear) has been an unmitigated disaster for the forests and the environment, but good for environmentalist and real estate.
google 'fire ecology', lodgepole pine, or ponderosas pine to learn how the major trees of the western forests are designed to use fire.
under fires are good for forests, crown fires are deadly to forests. The Rim fire is a crown fire, created in part by the Sierra Club.
