Naming the baby after a mass murderer.

SHE: Isn't he cute? Let's name him Manson. Or... I know... Dahmer! Berkowitz just doesn't sound like a first name, but otherwise, that would be cool, you know, like maybe he'd grow up thinking he was hearing what dogs were saying, what dogs wanted him to do. Like we catch him with his hand in the cookie jar and he's all Sunny told me to get a cookie.

HE: No, no, no. Speck! I insist. Forget dogs. Nurses. Richard Speck was all about those nurses, student nurses, murdered one by one. That's the association I like for our little boy.

SHE: But a speck is like a tiny little mark.

HE: People call their kids "Mark" all the time. And he is tiny.

"The younger of John Mellencamp's two adult sons, Speck Mellencamp, turned himself in to Monroe County authorities Friday, then was out on $5,000 bond the same day... Court documents describe a brutal beating during the early hours of July 29, when a 19-year-old man told police the Mellencamps and Smith came to his Bloomington home after a party. According to a probable cause affidavit, Speck Mellencamp thought the man had punched him at the party. The man told police Speck Mellencamp punched him so hard in the face that he fell down."

The older son, who has also turned himself in on felony charges, is named Hud. I would have recommended for the follow-on son Harper. But they decided Speck for some reason. One can only attempt to imagine why.

I would strongly advocate naming a baby after Anthony "The Cleveland Strangler" Sowell, even though it sounds like sewer when spoken aloud.

Speck is apparently quite the Hombre. having to Hustle over to the guy's place with Hud. Hopefully, when the guy fell backwards, he wasn't in the bathroom, resulting in a Torn Curtain.

He will be arraigned before Judge Roy Bean and it will cost him some Pocket Money before he can Exodus out of the court room. The cost of his son's malfeasance will create a Sting in John's pocketbook.

If only Cooler Hands had prevailed.

"Speck" and "Hud"? WTF? Even children of privilege get saddled with weird-ass names and display criminal propensities!

Speck is named after Johns grandfather. Hud was named for Paul Newmans character in the movie of the same name

In first grade, Sister Josephine cited the nurse who hid under the bed and prayed as an example of God's grace. For some reason it stuck in my memory but it wasn't till years later that I realized she had been talking about the Speck murders. What a strange thing to tell a room full of 6 and 7 year-olds. I still keep it in mind as a caution against inadvertently worrying small children with the horrors of the world.

I remember Richard Speck, what a dismal human being. You just have to be plain nuts to name a child after a mass murderer. Oh, lets name him after Gary Gilmore. Idiots.

Days turn to minutes and minutes to felonies.

Speck was apparently a family name. Nevertheless, might have been better to go with Adolph.

This little gem from JCM's Wikipedia page:

On his 2007 album, Freedom's Road, Mellencamp included a hidden track called "Rodeo Clown," which was a direct reference to George W. Bush ("The bloody red eyes of the rodeo clown").

The man's life is a mess and has been for a while. But he's a proper liberal. Just ask him.

It's kind of shallow to name your kid after a movie star. It adds another dimension of vapid to name him after an ambiguous character in a movie......But even worse than banal is the wish to consider your baby so special and unique that he deserves a name that has never before been given to a baby in the history of the earth.
