I bought a dhoti during a 3 week trip to Kerala, India. I have worn it on several occasions - although not "out in public". It is amazingly comfortable.
Whether it's a skirt, a kilt, or a dhoti - when it's hot, having that breeze/air circulation makes a big difference.
