Mr. Shabazz... spent much of his life seeking to make peace with his past. After pleading guilty to the juvenile equivalent of manslaughter and arson in his grandmother’s death in 1997, he was sentenced to institutions for many of his teenage years, followed by later stints in prison for other crimes.

Hate to say, but it sounds like he did very little peacemaking or seeking.
Hustler. Criminal. Habitual liar.
Hustled self into a NYT obit after doing nothing but harm in his life.
Just why did they write this?

This was at best a deeply troubled individual; at worst an evil one. The manner of his end should come as no surprise.

His mom was charged with hiring a hit man to kill Farakan. I think it was some kind of weird FBI entrapment thing, with the guy soliciting to do the job trying to turn state's evidence to get a sentence reduction. That was why the kid ended up living with his grandma (Malcolm X's widow).

That's a very sympathetic obit. He helped his barber get a look see from a recod exec. So far as I can tell from the obit that was not just his top good deed but his only one. Very few people get to burn their grandmother to death and then get to express their admiration for Qaddafi in person and then get a sympathetic obit from The Times. What would he have to do to deserve a more disparaging adjective than "troubled".
Alex Haley was a first rate writer. I have sometimes wondered if Malcolm X wasn't his greatest creation.

As was the older Malcolm X's assassination by the way. Insensitive, maybe. But Malcolm X was the one who said it about JFK So why can't it be used against Malcolm just as insenitively.
Farrakhan and the honorable Elijah Mohammad silenced that fool by any means necessary.
In the case of the younger X, if you burn your grandma you don't get much sympathy.

Hard to believe his ending, what with those two heavyweights, Dinkins and McKinney behind him. Nothing screams intellect, achievements and integrity than those two.

The real originals of Rita X would be from the late Mark Scott's show on WXYZ in Detroit, before Limbaugh's screener heard her and knew she was great radio. She'd left flipping crazy in the rear view eons ago but made for great radio.

When I went to high school all of our sports teams had a cap with an "X" on it for Xaverian high school. I always wore mine when I was out and about.
Until the movie "MalcomX" came out ant then every brother had one and wanted to beef with you if you wore it while being white.
